Yellow masa for tortillas?

astrobaja - 10-10-2010 at 10:13 AM

Hi all,

Just got a beautiful heavy wooden tortilla press made out of mesquite, works really well, nice and heavy!
My preference has always been for the yellow corn tortillas, get them in tacos in a few places around Ensenada but where can you buy the masa for them? All I find is the standard Maseca flour....

El Grano De Oro in TJ sells yellow masa. My wife say's that it is a chain, so you may find them in Ensenada.

In TJ if you are traveling west-bound on Bl. Diaz Ordaz turn left on Benton and you will see it. Their sign is a big elote.

Great news astro about your new press....I too make tortillas on an old wood press...just a little tip...we cut a plastic bag in half and put plastic over both sides...lay the tortilla ball on the plastic then cover it with the other half of the plastic...the clear bags work great...easy to lift off to put into the pan to cool....happy tortilla making amiga...the blue corn flour is awesome too.

The morning music of Mexico used to be slapping hands, swishing brooms, turkey gobbles and rooster crows. Ah, the taste of yellow corn tortillas simmering on a hot metal plate, juevos machaca with lobster in a ply wood restaurant by the Baja highway, heaven!! La Vida Loca!

I've always used wax paper for the same purpose.

We use the yellow corn Maseca and it makes yummy and easy tortillas (just add warm water and a pinch of salt) on our press. We use plastic wrap on ours to keep it from sticking. It's so easy the kids can help out and ours are only 4 and 2 :)
