I just arrived in Los Barriles yesterday. Mex 1 was drivable all the way, with major construction south of Ensenada and LOTS of other construction
along the way. I saw everything from road widening to new bridges going up, brush chopping, roadside clearing, etc. Question is this. Does anyone
know of any over-all plan or reason for the Gov't to be spending so much money? Hey, I know its Mexico and I know Mex 1 is the lifeline to Baja.
Still, I: was wondering if anyone had any hard information.David K - 10-14-2010 at 08:04 AM
Seems a general upgrade of all Baja highways from the skinny 19-21' wide, no shoulders style we had south of San Quintin and south of San Felipe, to
the new wide with shoulders modern 2 lane highway now in a couple sections north and south of El Rosario, north of San Felipe and south of
Puertecitos. It has been almost 37 years since Highway One's last section was built (between San Quintin and Santa Rosalia), so an upgrade is well
over-due considering the traffic over it.Marinero - 10-14-2010 at 08:55 AM
Following up my own post, I forgot to mention the extensive roadwork from Ensenada to Tecate and the score of new bridges in the last few years.
Altogether, a major investment.Bajahowodd - 10-14-2010 at 01:35 PM
Several of the locations of bridge work are simply repairing the damage done by storms earlier in the year. Having just made a round trip the length
of Baja this month, I must wonder about some priorities. There remain a number of stretches where the pavement is in bad shape. Now I suppose that
since there are perhaps 5000 signs along the way warning that Mex 1 is not a high speed road, there may be some element of keeping the speed down by
just having a crappy surface.
Then, I also noted road construction between Punta Prieta and Jesus Maria. Five or more miles, in the middle of nowhere, and they are significantly
widening the right of way. There? For what?surfer jim - 10-14-2010 at 04:02 PM
Maybe they are rebuilding that section so when the road from San Felipe is finished it can merge there.David K - 10-14-2010 at 05:16 PM
They are not just fixing the bridges that were washed out last January, they are widening them! I would hope to 4 lanes, and it looks like it could
be 4 lanes wide.. but at least to the newer standard of highways with wide lanes and wide shoulders.movinguy - 10-19-2010 at 12:31 PM
Update . . . construction south of Maneadero sucks!! Add 30-60 minutes depending on time of day, etc... David K - 10-19-2010 at 03:25 PM

San Felipe highway will join at Laguna Chapala... nearly the same as the current road, except it will bi-pass Coco's Corner staying about a mile west
of Coco's... along the older pre 1982 road and El Camino Real route.
