FIRST ISSUE of DEZERT MAGAZINE ON-LINE

http://www.dezertmagazine.com/current-issue

Bringing back a great publication many of us were very fond of, Baja Nomad member 'dezert mag' (John Grasson) has put a lot of hard work into this e-magazine.

Check it out... the pages open like a real magazine, make the page full screen and zoom in for easier reading.

David K - 10-15-2010 at 09:11 AM

Glad you liked it... there will be stories from the old Desert Magazine and Baja articles as well... !

Is there a way to access the video to the narration when you open up the page. I would like to see what the guy is talking about.

I found it on page 9, its about the " the real baja dogs ", it just starts playing as soon as I open it. it was not until I got to page 9 that I found it.

You are going to have to help me with this question... What video, what narration, what page???

The link I posted takes you to the magazine cover (scroll down a bit to see it fully), which you click on to open the magazine pages for reading.

It is just like a magazine, with text and photos... click the arrow on the right edge of the page to flip to the next page, click the zoom icon at the bottom to enlarge for reading...

Ther is no video link I have seen. But, I will email your question to John (dezert mag)!

David------there IS a pretty long vocal narritive that appears with no apparent connection to what you are reading------at least that happened on my first navigation of the on-line magazine, and I suspect that is what Dirk is referring to. (by the way great article by you).

Once you get the hang of how the site works, it is slick, and I like it.

Congrats to John for a job well done, and to you for what ever involvement you had. Really looking forward to future additions.

Thank you Barry,

John and I have met here at least 3 times and poured over all the Choral Pepper papers and photos I have... ( for those who don't know of Choral Pepper: Choral Pepper was the publisher and editor of Desert Magazine in the 1960's with husband Jack, I was given all her Baja related collections of photos, letters, and notes following her death in 2002 see http://choralpepper.com ).

I will be writing Baja articles for the readers...

My computer is pretty old now, and so full of photos and map files... it has a hard time viewing the magazine in that adobe format... I have not seen anything of it other than the linked intro page and then the new issues and its 41 pages... I don't know what it is you see that is a video... But, I did email John with a link to this thread and hope he can answer the mystery.

Hello Everyone,
Sorry to log in soooo late but I had a small issue logging in ( my fault )... First I would to thank each and everyone one of you for all your kind words. The response to this has be UNBELIEVABLE !!!!! I even received a email from Gene Conrotto who was the editor of the Original Dezert Magazine ( ODM ) and he also had nothing but good things to say....We also had over 700 hits on the site in less than 24 hrs...WOW!!!!!
As far as the video is concerned, on page 9 we have a story about a group of guys called the REAL Desert Dogs. And the video was from the " alpha dog " Andrew Perry, talking about how they started and what they are all about. We are still trying to work out all of the " kinks ", but if you have a slower computer it may be a little more difficult. I use Firefox and do not have any problems on my end. However if look at the bottom left of the magazine ( the flip book ) you will see some different symbols. They are from left to right Table of contents ( not being used ), bookmarks ( where you can " tag " a page with notes ), and thumbnails. The thumbnails will allow each page to be displayed on the left side, and that way you can go directly to a particular page and preview the rest... This might help with some of the page loading.
Next is permalink, when you click on this you will see a drop down address bar. Click on copy and then paste it in a new address bar and it will take you directly to that page...Try it out!!!! The rest a pretty normal, full screen, zoom, print, save and sound.
We are also currently getting ready to upload the complete Original Desert Magazine series ( to include the Joan Brooks issues ). And all of these will be using the flip book and will ALWAYS be FREE!!!!!!!!! This will be a much better way to read the magazines than scribd.com.... We are also currently in discussion with Sunbelt publishing to be able to carry their books as well. And finally we will have T-shirts and hats etc for sale soon too...
The magazine will be a quarterly issued and David is our Associate Editor for all things Baja, so if you have any stories or something you would like to share PLEASE let David know..... I hope this helps most of you, if not feel free to send me a email at editor@dezertmagazine.com

Have fun and Thankx for everything....

Hello Everyone,
I wanted to say THANK YOU to each and everyone who has stopped by Dezert Magazine... Today ( 1 week later ) we have had nearly 1200 hits, and that is absolutely AMAZING- not to sound like Huell Howzer... lol We are still working as of today and have completed uploading the 1937 and 1938 editions of the Original Desert Magazine also in a flip book format. In case you didn't know, on the lower left corner there are some icons that allow you to print, save, email and bookmark each issue. Bookmarking lets you keep your notes next to your favorite story. Thx again everybody and especially David !!!!

John

Bout time someone came up with a decent e_magazine.
Writings are very interesting...not dragged out boring.

Oh....a tip: if you have a spin wheel on your mouse...it changes the pages.
