Could anyone explain to me why they don't start having in Mexico. I know there are a lot bigger problems on there list to solve ( corruption,
healthcare, education ) but if they would just add a few cents charge for there glass and aluminum at the stores, don't you think this would
A: Create some income for the Mexicans would pick up the glass and aluminum ( i.e. beer cans )
B: Eliminate a lot of there trash problem.
This is just a thought. I love Mexico and the idea to beautify it and put some money in those nice people pocket it sounds like a no
brainier. Just a thought.

Here in Rosarito, guys come by and collect all the cans and plastic prior to the trash trucks arrival on Mondays.
Down south, the same thing is going on and they have regular road crews cleaning up the road sides.

down south you will rarely see a aluminum can on the side of the road and you do see alot of people walking the roads picking them up.

Tommy A., It depends on the price of Scrap. At one time the main hiways of Baja were covered with wrecked cars on the sides. In about '93 &'94 they
where
allmost all gone, you would see guys with old pickups loaded with them.
In the last 3 years I have noticed on BCN 5 that the burned out wrecks between Mexicalli and San Felipe are increasing at a rate of about 1 a month
so I guess prices are down.
Cans are different, Cans marked with a California refund make it worth while for the Mexicans to pick up.
We collect cans at our campo and mash them and return them to Az to our church to sell, I have been questioned by US Customs twice this year what I
am doing hauling cans and they have the dope dog sniff them and then they scratch their heads and let me go! I do not know how the Mexicans get them
across?
In San Felipe this past year there has been a battery recyling place open so now the hundreds of discarded deep cycle batterys in the road side dumps
are being brought in, they are sending them to Tijuana??

I would tend to think that recycling is practiced more here in Baja that in any State in the US.
Besides the aluminum and recyclable bottles, I also know of one guy that buys scrap non returnable bottles here in San Felipe. Once a year he hauls it
off to the glass plant in Mexicali to recycle. I think he makes enough after expences to buy all his helpers a six pack. He still does it anyway.
Cars are kept functional and running, long after they would have been retired in the states, from parts salvaged off of old junkers. It is not
possible to find a non functioning Toyota Truck in town for parts. They all still run.
Here in San Felipe the city dump is refered to as "Walmart". Only thing missing are the smilly face signs. Nice wide isles ( big enough for the trash
trucks) and the old merchandise is burned off every few weeks to make room for more.
Bottom line. Lots of recycling going on down here.
