May I Ask Everyone For A Moment Of Honor?

These brave souls died trying to help people we love a lot...

A Cut & Paste

TIJUANA, Mexico — A light plane carrying four Californians on a medical aid flight has crashed in Baja California, killing all four aboard, state authorities said Sunday.

The Beechcraft A36 was on a flight from Ensenada to San Quintin on Friday when it disappeared. Searchers found the plane on Saturday in rough terrain about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of Ensenada, said Victor Jones, president of the Flying Samaritans organization.

State Civil Protection Director Alfredo Escobedo said the plane apparently hit a 3,900-foot (1,200-meter) hill and then slid down to a mesa.

Those aboard were pilot Roger Lyon, of Cayucos, Calif.; Drs. Graciela Sarmiento and James Thornton , of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; and medic Andrew Thiel, a student in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Escobedo said authorities had recovered three bodies and were working to recover the fourth from the wreckage.

The Flying Samaritans is an all-volunteer organization that transports medical personnel to at least 17 clinics in Baja California.

Escobedo said the plane that went down was one of three on a mission from the San Luis Obispo area.

why could it not have been a planeload of drug jefes instead of docs? sooo very sad

Eli - 10-17-2010 at 01:18 PM

Yes, I can do that; I most certainly do honor the doctors & pilot, after all there is so much to honor in what good they do.

No doubt, a pure gift of humanitarian aid by
such groups as Flying Samaritans,
Doctors without Borders, other groups. Be it in Baja
the rest of Mexico, Central America, etc.

It's things such as this that really make me question whether there truly is a God.

How do we reconcile the idea of good deeds being punished thusly?

vgabndo - 10-17-2010 at 04:07 PM

Howodd: It is a sad occurance indeed, and I feel the crushing grief of their loved ones, but I believe that flying in IFR conditions in a heavily laden plane, perhaps on a schedule that didn't allow for waiting for the sky to clear, had more to do with their loss than metaphysics.

They are lost none the less, and the world is a poorer place as a result. I hope they did not suffer.

The Skye Boat Song ~ an Irish Aire

Speed bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward, the sailors cry
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye

Though the waves leap, soft shall you sleep
Ocean's a royal bed
Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head

Speed bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward, the sailors cry
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye

DavidE,

YES!...and thank you. "A moment of honor" indeed!:)

I've met some of the Flying Samaritans on trips to remote baja outposts. They are first class people who could make a ton of money elsewhere if they so wanted. I have the highest regard for them. Sorry to read of this tragedy.

as stated, "They are lost none the less, and the world is a poorer place as a result. "

These types of giving souls, who travel out to where the need is the greatest....they are the ones who's deeds are never sung but change the world, one person at a time.

Mexitron - 10-18-2010 at 04:57 AM

So sorry to hear of this happening to these great people.

Sad for everyone, family, loved ones, patients, and potential patients.
There were certainly honorable folks.

BAJACAT - 10-19-2010 at 11:28 AM
