Kudos to Pomp re: Red Truck

Santiago - 10-17-2010 at 04:51 PM

Just got back from a trip to BOLA where I was in charge of the white wine and my buddy the red. I bought 3 bottles of Red Truck on Pomp's recommendation, leaving two at home with SWMBO and took one with us. She, a white wine drinker, on my return insisted I go get more red truck. Huh????? Apparently, she opened a bottle for cooking, thinking it was a cheap wine, decided to try a sip and ended up drinking the rest of the bottle and the next over the week I was gone.
At least, that's her story and she's sticking to it.

Looks can be deceiving !!

Pompano - 10-17-2010 at 06:38 PM

Diver is most astute...and something else, but we won't go into that here...

One Red Truck...bottle gone.

Second Red Truck...Pompano gone.

Here's another red you might try...Little Black Dress.

I guess this is the year for good color-named wines.

Personally, I like the way it was conveyed by Nicholoson in "A Few Good Men":

Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

I've had it. It's fruit-forward, no-tannins, unbalanced wine. And it deserves the price point it is at. Women love it............so do men who want their wombmen "frisky".

But that's a personal opinion, based on a personal price point, personal taste and a married man. Your mileage may vary. I'm a professional driver on a closed course these days. No complaints. But, I'm willing to spend a little more for a lot better wine.

Try the reds from McManis, especially the petite syrah, if you are looking for value reds. Generally, McManis reds are aged in a combination of new and old oak so they are not oak bombs, yet they are chewy, meaning rather dense fruit for this price point. Yes, it's mostly central valley fruit from the Ripon area. In the hands of knowledgeable people, it works. Havent tried the McManis whites, but this winery knows what they are doing in the value category. Have seen them at Albertson's and Safeway in CA and AZ.

Of course, VALUE is a subjective term.................you want value? PARADIS 2007 TERRE DES ANGES COTEAUX D'AIX EN PROVENCE. Barely under 20 bucks at Winex in Orange. Or they have a few magnums, too, for a little more cache at a dinner party.

More value? VITANZA 2005 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO TRADIZIONE. Brunello from 05 for less than vente huesos, AGAIN! KILLER BRUNELLO FOR A RIDICULOUS BRUNELLO PRICE!!!!!

Or, maybe a French Cab.Bordeaux for under 12,00? GRANDS MARECHAUX 2008 COTES DE BLAYE

You DO remember what the dollar is worth these days, don't you? Twenty bucks for wines like these is like paying for middle of the road Latin American wines right now, which is not a bad thing, really.

Value comes in all shapes an sizes, amigos. Hey, Japan sells a lot of VALUE trucks, even.

GO RANGERS..........GO GIANTS!!!!

In Feb of this year I posted that maybe, just maybe, good pitching would beat good hitting and the Giants would win the division over the Dodgers. EVERYONE, including the owner of this board who moved my thread to OT where it belonged anyway, completely dissed my ruminations. Did you make it to all the parks this summer?

Hook - 10-19-2010 at 05:57 AM

I only made it to two, Oakland and Safeco. It was a West Coast swing. Illness of my wife cost me hitting ATT Park.

You deserve your accolades if you picked the Giants. But I think their run ends against the Phillies, unfortunately. Just not enough hitting. Still, a Rangers-Phils series would be a very competitive series.

Is Cliff Lee amazing, or what????? I've never seen a better finesse pitcher in all my years of watching. He actually has better control that Greg Maddux did, IMO, and he does it with 4 pitches.

Hook - 10-19-2010 at 06:01 AM

captmike, I havent had it and am not likely to until spring training of next year. Doubt I will find it down here.

You're a Phoenix-Tucson guy, aren't you? Go to any of the Total Wine stores and ask them their value recommendations. Those guys are knowledgeable and you wont beat their prices.

capt. mike - 10-19-2010 at 06:23 AM

ok, and i like bevmo too for the 5 cent sale. i just stocked a bunch of favs at essentially 1/2 off.

Pompano - 10-19-2010 at 06:54 AM

Hah! Hmm...let's see. Good red wine for a good price...Plus Frisky Women? Yup, sounds okay to me.

Thanks Hook...just the chuckle I need to start the day!

On Red Truck wine. This summer Co-Pilot and I took a few wine tours around the USA, both west and east..and early on were guests of an old Baja amigo who owns a popular Napa winery. His top reds are pretty pricey for casual drinking. One night at dinner he asked me what everyday red we drank. I told him. He advised us to try another smaller winery's 'Red Truck'...he said I would be surprised, like a lot of others he had advised to try this good tasting wine. No, not his brand.

We tried it, Loved it....

...and yes, the women get frisky!! Or is this just my feminine side talking....?

capt. mike - 10-19-2010 at 07:20 AM

Pompano = i am insanely jealous if you were guests of Randy D!!
BTW - do you recall Kevin Laird who had a place at Posada and is a close friend of Randy's? i am buying thatch from his company Safari for the resort here.

Pompano - 10-19-2010 at 07:42 AM

Wrong guess, Mike. Not Randy's, but his wine is top shelf, too. This owner does not fly a suck and blow. ;)

capt. mike - 10-19-2010 at 08:48 AM

suck and blow?? reminds me of a girl i once knew from Eastern Europe, Bettina Blozunfuchs from Prague....well enuff of that!:lol:
RD has a turbo commander, it sucks $$ and blows you down south fast like 300 kts!

another suck and blow i like is a cessna mixmaster like Cj has.

Would that be a 337? Used to love 'em :)

capt. mike - 10-19-2010 at 12:04 PM

yes a 337. Cj has one, flies to mulege a lot. his is turbo'd but it seems it is in the shop all the time. the maintenance $$ on one will eat you alive, that back engine is a bear.

Skeet/Loreto - 10-19-2010 at 04:12 PM

Mike: If you ever get a 337 Please do not try to start the Rear Engine with a takeoff for an Air Start. It wont Work!!

Mike have you looked at a Single Engine Cessna.?? I have about 500 Hours in a Bonaza , 750 in a commanche 250, still like that High Wing.
Did about 250 hours in a Twin and just never trusted them in case of a Restart after an Engine Failure.

Skeet/Loreto - 10-19-2010 at 04:14 PM

Mike and Pomp'
Sure do like that Red Truck;

If you ever get a chance LLano of Texas has a Signature Red that is real close to Red Truck. At the present time it is ot being sold out of Texa.

come to see me and I wil buy you a Case to take to Baja!!

Skeet

Bajahowodd - 10-19-2010 at 04:29 PM

Geez. I saw the title of the thread, and immediately thought Roger had something to do with the fire truck in Mulege! Go figure.

:lol::lol::lol:

bajacalifornian - 10-19-2010 at 06:43 PM

What's this? A thread of wine & 337's? I'm in. You consumer guys living in Bevmolandia . . . I'm envious. But . . . yesterday, with a water pump sounding like it was about to take a crap, I stoped by the local electric shop, man followed me home, replaced bearings and now it's silent. Would you trade 5 bottles, available for that? No se.

capt. mike - 10-19-2010 at 07:11 PM

Skeeter - i have toured the wineries of Del Rio TX - they are superb!

elgatoloco - 10-19-2010 at 08:21 PM

Steelhead
Quivira Vineyards
Zinfandel
2007
Dry Creek Valley
Sonoma

Trader Joe's $6.99. IMHO a great value.

TJ's bought out the last of the 2007 at a good price. Report is that Quivira will be changing the label design and wanted to get rid of extra stock.

We just had a bottle of it with dinner. Cheese ravioli over homegrown spinach covered with sauce made with fresh from the wife's garden tomato, eggplant, red and yellow bell peppers, and scallions. Yummy.

Wife is going back to TJ's tomorrow to pick up a case for the cellar. :dudette:

capt. mike - 10-20-2010 at 06:07 AM

thx Matt i will grab a case when i get back to Snottsdale thursday noche!

elgatoloco - 10-21-2010 at 12:49 PM

No sales for me in Havasu. I will find my way to PHX before the end of the year though. The wifey runs the kitchen. I am only the grill master. You need to stop by and see the remodel. Place looks a bit different. Give a shout if you are coming this way. Last night we had another bottle. Pork ribs, black beans, rice and platanos. Yum.

capt. mike - 10-21-2010 at 01:30 PM
