Yellow Butterfly

We see them at sea, carpeting hillside valleys & pedaling the breeze flowing down streets in town. Goggling "yellow butterfly" has been unenlightening. Anyone have comment about them or a link to share? Maybe, a picture is attached. B.C.

A migrating species for sure! They get so thick in Central California at times, you have to turn on the wipers at freeway speeds! Just clouds of them at 80 mph, hell of a mess. :o

Butterflies

It's that time of year again. In spite of very low rainfall this year here in Loreto, we are still having yellow butterfly flurries. I think it has mostly to do with availability of host plants. Each species has its preferred plant to lay eggs on and will fly around looking for that perfect spot. This year so far, every yellow I've been close enough to to ID has been a large orange sulphur, Phoebis agarithe. Last year these were fairly scarce, and southern dogfaces and cloudless sulphurs were most of the yellows I saw. Other years it's been statiras. Go figger.

They pass through MS/LA on their way south in early fall or late summer.:D

There are a few species down there so it could be any of the species mentioned in this thread so far. The larger ones (Phoebis sp.) like to use some of the Cassia species as hosts so plant those in your yard if you like them. They make it up to San Diego and lay on the Cassia in my back yard most years.

As I looked down the beach, there were 50-60 patches of these things about the size of a large dinner platter. I could come up as close as two feet to them before they appeared nervous so didn't have to use much zoom-

Many species of butterflies exhibit a behavior known as puddling. This is when they can gather in large numbers sometimes in spots to drink mineral rich fluids from the soil. It can be quite a sight sometimes if several species of different colors are doing this together.
