Gas prices?

KurtG - 10-23-2010 at 02:09 PM

Anybody know the current pump price/liter for Magna out of the border region? A friend just reported paying the dollar equivalent of $3.25 in Ensenada which seems way high to me. The last I heard was 8.6 pesos/liter which at 12.4 pesos/dollar works out to $2.63 gallon.
Thanks,
Kurt

Phil S - 10-23-2010 at 03:17 PM

For years I used to "wonder" what the price of gas was "down there". finally I realized that it wasn't going to be what I was 'hoping' it would be, so I gave up. Maybe for those that carry large amounts of 'spare' gasoline this could be important.
Guess if the price of gas goes up too much, one would keep buying a car that would keep getting better mileage each time they go down. Eventually, I can see one coming down in motorcycles. eventually ending up on one of those "California Specials" that recently came down. Then there is always the busses. Cheap way to travel. And no risk. Well, maybe a little risk. but then after 25 years of driving down sometimes twice a year to Loreto, I've never seen a 'wrecked' bus on these trips. Hope I never do.

Bob and Susan - 10-23-2010 at 03:19 PM

here in mulege...

8.29peso a liter

thats $2.57usa a gallon
at 12.2peso to one dollar

Bob and Susan - 10-23-2010 at 03:22 PM

the "friend" bought "red" gas

it's a buck more

Bajahowodd - 10-23-2010 at 04:43 PM

First, there is a government policy in effect to gradually increase the cost of gasoline. The background on that is the awareness that aside from the worldwide limits of crude, Mexico, in particular, has experienced a dramatic decline in the output of its oilfields. So, they are attempting to achieve a soft landing, by gradually increasing prices, in hope that demand will decline.

Second, similarly to what I've stated about folks who seem almost paranoid about getting the absolute best exchange rate for their money, the same goes for gas. You're on vacation for God's sake. Who in their right mind could enjoy their vacation while they dither about a couple bucks for gas?

Just got back from two weeks down and up the peninsula, all the way. My ATM card has seven charges for withdrawals. The fee was $3 each time.

So, I spend two weeks in Baja, having a great time, and I should now fret about having spent $21 to get pesos? Geez.

Jeez, I was looking for a simple answer to a simple question not an editorial. I do travel by motorcycle most of the time I'm in Mexico.

jeremias - 10-23-2010 at 11:43 PM

I think it is getting a bit closer to the 3 dollar mark at least as far as Ensenada. Although I haven't really paid much attention to the price per liter, so hard to say exactly. But since there are plenty of mathematicians here on Nomads, I'm curious as well.

I love the Editorials!! Insights, opinions, experience. If you want facts look back of Baja Nomads previous posts which explain Govtmt policies et al! I always complain even tho I know it balances out. All posts re Hotels, restaurants involve opinions, aka editorials. Soooo Experience is the best teacher. Tio

It will be what it will be and it is as simple as that.

Well.....maybe you should check in at www.snob.com for help! You should be thanking everyone for the time they just gave you....and not giving a retorted remark.

It's like EVERYTHING in Baja.

OK, I officially apologize to all! As to snobbery, if you ever see my motorcycle or car that will be put to rest. Gas prices do not determine if I travel to Baja or not, a friend with no internet access asked me to get the current prices for him. The problem I had with the "editorial comment" is that it reflected the author's view not mine. I'm delighted for those of you who do not have to budget for travel expenses but as a retired guy who lives on social security, a veterans pension and a bit of savings, I do have to plan a bit. If that makes me a snob then so be it but I think those who actually know me got a chuckle out of that description.
Kurt

Have fun on your next trip Kurt! It was nice to travel with you to Mision Santa Maria last May!

I've seen both your bike and your car and would agree, you are anything but a snob. When he isn't traveling by bike, the man drives an older Honda Civic, can't get much more economical then that. And I'm with you, you put forth a simple question which someone turned into a lecture on lifestyles. The irony is that KurtG already lives that lifestyle, thus his annoyance at being lectured.

Speaking of someone who has a nack for inadvertently annoying people, how are you, my good friend David K?
Nice to see photos of our outting to Santa Maria mission, good times and good memories. You still planning on heading this way next month?

Just your remark was a snob. I am sure that your are not member of www.snob.com but ..........some folks here just plain dont know who you are and the response you gave was indeed a snob job. If you wished a simple 3 word response to your question...perhaps that should had been stated......this is a place where folks like to talk with details....as you must have this understanding already from being a long time member of this board. DavidK coming to your defense with all these pictures dont do erasure of the "simple question not an editorial" remark.

bajalou - 10-26-2010 at 10:30 AM

As a person that's been on this board for awhile, I can certainly understand the frustration of asking a rather simple question and getting 5-10-20 comments about the subject before anyone gives the simple answer.

I do believe if we can see a real person rather than just a typed message, it helps Nomads seem even more human. Afterall, we are all Baja lovers, so why there is any hate or nastiness posted is beyond me. I wasn't coming to Kurt's defense, as he didn't do anything that required any. Can't you see why some irritation when one only asks a rather common question, often asked here, only to get those comebacks? Let it go...

Hi Steve... The money situation is near critical here, and vacations are just a dream. I hope we can come south... a small chance we will assist with pitting for the Baja 1000 with Elizabeth's son.

Thanks for asking and I hope the invitation will be good for when we can come to La Paz... I think Elizabeth would really enjoy it!

Bajatripper - 10-26-2010 at 11:15 AM

You are always welcome to stay with us, in spite of your political leanings:lol:

One of my sons is coming down on his honeymoon and we plan on doing some camping during the Baja 1000, somewhere along the course where it parallels the Pacific before arriving in La Paz. Perhaps we'll see you out there.

David....
I agree with you 99% of the time. You are all good. But: this is a place of many minds and therefor ways to respond.....the expectations of a perfect reply to a question submitted.....well....is dreaming! Very very very few answers given in here are open and shut responses.

Given a written response of "simple answer to a simple question not an editorial'.....took as much time to write as it would had been to simply skim thru the "editorials". Why even bother to say something snobbish? I can post groups pictures here of me.....with other Nomads...but it wont change the context of the subject.

David, I'll have to post a more recent pic or send you one. I've managed to drop about 50 lbs this year and besides simply feeling better its like my bike got a 20% hp boost!

To say nothing of the better gas mileage you must now get on it as well as in your car. But you want to be careful there, Kurt, lose too much weight and, in addition to sounding like a snob, you might start looking like one. But that's better than looking like a slob:lol: (gawd, I hope you have a good sense of humor).

On a serious note, congratulations on dropping the weight. That couldn't have been easy.

No worries on the sense of humor thing, I have always found it easy to laugh at myself. I'm about 2/3's of the way to my goal of losing 75 lb's. Goal is to reach the same weight I was when I left the Army in 1965, wish I could be in that kind of shape again. As they say "youth is wasted on the young."
