Gonzaga Bay is one of my favorite winter birding sites.
Thank you for reminding me why.

These are the most beautiful bird photos I have ever seen. I am so glad you are posting them here, Bucko. Outstanding!!!bonanza bucko - 10-24-2010 at 10:57 AM
I'm sorry I goofed...the Peregrine Falcon shot was taken at Torrey Pines in San Diego...pretty hard to grow ice plant at Gonzaga Bay!..The rest of
these shots, however, were taken at Alfonsina's..most in the back bay there. They also were taken early when the light was good.

I'll definitely keep an eye out for falcons at Torrey Pines now - I had no idea they could be there.
Great shots - what equipment do you use?bonanza bucko - 10-25-2010 at 08:47 AM
The Peregrine Falcons nest in the cliffs over the beach until about May and then the go North...mostly to Bolsa Chica State Park. If you are lucky
you can walk on the trail along the cliffs and get shots of them in the air. I was super lucky to get this critter sitting down and eating a Dove.
I use Canon EOS 50D and 7D cameras and Canon Lenses....mostly stabilized "L" jobbies..those are the "Professional" lenses so they charge you more.
For Birds In Flight ("BIF" to the bunch who shoot them) I mostly use a Canon 100-400 f:4-5.6 L IS USM lens. Because my cameras have a 1.6:1 crop that
makes a lens of 160-640MM...long! I usually shoot at ISO 400 and about 1/2500th with aperture as it falls out of that. Lately I have been using
custom white balance with a card. I also use spot focus with "expansion" and spot or center weighted average metering. My cameras shoot either 6 or
8 frames per second so I usually shoot BIF in bursts and select the best shots. For BIF I also shoot using the Canon "Servo AI" mode....tracks the
subject and keeps it in focus.
I gave you all the Meta Data above because others have asked for it....not to bore you or anyone else. I am not a pro so a real photographer might
differ with some of the above.
