Rosarito to.....????

krafty - 10-25-2010 at 07:36 PM

What would be a reasonable stop over point with 3days to get to Cabo from Rosarito, and do you think it will be an issue over the Thanksgiving Day weekend to get a room anywhere? Hard to reserve when you don't know where you will end up, but have to decide soon I guess-many thanks!

san ignacio, loreto, LONG day to cabo?

krafty - 10-25-2010 at 08:19 PM

We have three days to get to Cabo-being we have never been further than Ensenada we were going to take our time and maybe stop in some cool towns, but having never been I am imagining that we won't be tooling along at 65 mph either. We will probably do 3 days back later in the month-

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm well, if you want to get off the beaten track, visit us in La Bocana ... we are on the Pacific. It takes a little over an hour from the main road to our house .... you take the exit to Punta Abreojos, I can give you more details later ..

But really, if your goal is to get to Cabo, I would stop at Casa Leree in San Ignacio. She is near the center of town, her guesthouse was the FIRST one ever in that town and she has the most amazing collection of photos and antiques in her free museum. NOt only that, she is a sweetheart to boot.

don't forget that you MUST fill up the gas tank in El Rosario. There is no proper gas station for two hundred miles after that ..... sometimes there are guys selling gas along the road, but you really don't want to count on that .....

Have a fun trip !!

Sra Blanca you rock! Someone recommended to stay in El Rosario but that would only be 175 miles from us-hope we can do better than that the first day!
I have read some of your posts and would love to come stay with you in La Bocana-hope to go off the beaten path on our return. Many thanks-so far I am pretty clueless on the best way to do this-
taking baby steps!

go for it Krafty...you will have fun with Blanca...
I highly recommend reservations for thanksgiving weekend time frame...especially at smaller hotels like Casa Leree which is fantastic too. We have been booked solid for months for that time as there are lots of people travelling that week...just a heads up...have a great trip.

If you want to see Baja (south of Ensenada), why are you only allowing 3 days? Compared to the rest of Baja, Cabo is just one place that looks nothing like the rest of the peninsula...

IMO, you will find Bahia de los Angeles, San Ignacio, Mulege, Bahia Concepcion, Loreto, Santiago and Miraflores more beautiful and interesting.

Thanks all-we are doing Cabo because my son has a time share @ Puebla Bonita @ Sunset and has asked us to join him-personally I would be happy just cruisin' around Baja. We do live f/t in Rosarito so we will take notes and be back for sure! Thought San Ignacio looked pretty far down-how many hrs. do you reckon it would take from Baja Norte? thanks.....

it's sometimes the luck of the draw, but between road construction, slow trucks in the mountains, and generally heavy traffic for a few dozen miles around San Quintin, it's been my experience that sometimes it's difficult to travel as far in daylight as one hopes. In my opinion, leaving from Rosarito, Guerrero Negro is safely doable. San Ignacio, while much more picturesque, is a good 90-120 minutes farther.

Loreto to Cabo is an easy drive. So, you can pick your towns for sightseeing in between GN and Loreto.

It is a good 12 hours with stops for the 525 miles, so start early! Otherwise, Guerrero Negro (10 hours) has plenty of motels and the favorites have been talked about endlessly on Nomad... Cowboy and Caracol being a couple. Still too long, how about taking a 41 mile paved detour to beautiful Bahia de los Angeles for the first night (8 hour drive) and stay at Costa del Sol or Villa Bahia or Guillermos...?

First night - Catavina
Second night - Loreto
Third night - Cabo

In winter you only get 10 hours of daylight.

1st night Bahia de los Angeles camp at Daggets

2nd night Loreto probably drive slow through Santa rosalia and other towns lookin around and stop to do one quick loop in san ignacio pick up a date pie.

3rd night Cabo but stop at Todo santos for some chicken or fish then drive to cabo but youll probably want to go back to todos its much more laid back? have fun:o

I agree with the consensus that Rosarito to San Ignacio is too far in the winter with short days. Pretty far even with long days. That time of year for me Catavina is a sure thing, Guerrero Negro is a stretch.
