San Francisquito Nov. 1

XRPhlang - 10-26-2010 at 08:37 AM

My wife cancelled out on me, but I'm going anyway. Now there's room for the XR. I plan to truck my motorcycle to San Francisquito and explore Bahia de Animas, possibly check out the b1k course in that area (my way, slow and easy). Any nomads going down to pre-run in that area?

You might want to check out the mystery wall site, 2 miles from Bahia Las Animas... http://vivabaja.com/109

Phil, I'm leaving Friday the 29th with several stops along the way to deliver stuff and hope to be in San Ignacio on the 31st to start a pre-run on the race course to La Paz. How long will you be at San Francisquito?

XRPhlang - 10-26-2010 at 11:49 AM

TW, I've got to be back in SLO on Nov. 7 (chili cookoff) so that would put me in SF around Nov. 2. It looks like you'll already be South of me and heading the other way by then. Are you going all the way to La Paz? When are you heading North?

TMW - 10-26-2010 at 04:27 PM

Yes I'm going to La Paz then head back. Probably two days to get to La Paz from San Ignacio by the race course, the 31st and 1st. I would be back to San Ignacio on the 2nd. We need to get the squarecircle to come down into that area and explore around, maybe find a route from Santa Barbara to Santa Gertrudis or down the coast line.

Both ideas sound good to me. I could make it to San Ignacio by the 2nd, or 3rd after riding around SF for a day, or so. I thought I'd check out Davis K's wall while I'm in the area. If Roy is able, I bet he'd be up for it. Can you get a hold of him?

I left a message..., have not heard from Roy in awhile... Fun guy and is up for any off road adventure!

Like when he drove 'Winston' (his Land Rover LR3) up Kacey Smith's 'XR Ride' in La Turquesa Canyon to Hwy. 1 !

Phil, if you want to hang out a day longer around San Francisquito I can meet you there on evening of the 2nd or the morning of the 3rd. It depends on how my pre-running goes. I may skip the 48 mile section just before Loreto, the reports are that the silt is pretty bad and I'm not interested in getting stuck. We could explore the wall David was talking about and if the Square circle joins us anywhere else. I'm in my silver GMC Z71.

TMW - 10-27-2010 at 08:46 AM

Phil one of the stops I was going to make is no longer necessary so I think I can be in San Francisquito on the morning of the 2nd.

XRPhlang - 10-27-2010 at 12:08 PM

That sounds good TW. I'll plan to make it to SF by Monday afternoon. I guess they have some palapas there. Look for a grey Tacoma and an XR600.

TMW - 10-27-2010 at 04:16 PM

Will do Phil. See you on Tuesday the 2nd.

wow

The prerun is both work and fun. Maybe more work since I need to know the access points for the race in case there is a breakdown, accident etc. The silt bed areas and alternate paths around them without getting myself stuck. The rocky areas where a rear tire change may be necessary. And milage checks, I've already found what appears to be a 50 mile discrepancy between the course notes from SCORE and the course overlay on Google Earth.

The real Baja fun begins when Phil and I get together to explore the many mysteries around the San Francisquito area.

captkw - 10-30-2010 at 11:25 AM

50 miles is a big OOPPPS ,grew up in the moutains above santa cruz ca. riding a old yammy 250 enduro busting knulkles on the redwood trees,,the good old days, old, smelly 2 strokers,ah the smell, great with coffee at first light...any way have a great trip...ya know, maybe I should get back to riding, this boating is not cheap!!!!

If you stop in Playa San Rafael, say hi to Pancho and ask if he needs anything. We plan on spending Thanksgiving there with him.

Have a good trip.

I met Phip on the afternoon of Nov 2. Had a great time. Sorry we did not stop at Playa San Rafael unless Phil did after we parted. I wish I had, next time for sure, will probably stay a couple of days there. It was warm down there, mid to upper 90s. Strong breeze most of the time. White caps on the water. Nights were good.

For those thinking of flying into San Francisquito they have gas. There were two single engine planes coming and going while we were there. Maybe more but I only saw two. Phil said there were a team of dentist doing dental work at El Barril.
