Teenagers driving in Mexico

So...do the citizens of Mexico carry a legal doc DL? Never seen a DMV in Mexico.

I would like to know the requirements for a driver in Baja. I have a 151/2 year old itching to drive this Spring Break.

Driving off road should be fine, and safer all around.

Between cows, drunks, crazy impatient drivers, slow trucks, bicycles, or all these in one location the roads are scary enough as is without adding in an inexperienced 15 year old behind the wheel. IMHO a 15 year old just does not have the experience to deal with driving the paved road alongside cows, drunks, crazies, bikes, and passing slow trucks with oncoming traffic.

I do believe MX does issue drivers licenses, but the requirements are likely not as strict and tested as the USA. Also I'll bet the fine for the driving without a license, especially for a gringo driver would be steep, or at least the mordida would be.....

Yes, there are Driver's Licenses in Mexico and the legal age is 18.

However, around here there are kids driving at a much younger age and they do not seem to be bothered----unless the police are doing one of their main street license checks and then those, including adults, who do not have licenses drive around and away from the main street.

There are VERY young children driving around on quads around here on the dirt roads----so I can't imagine that your young one would have a problem in the outback.

Best way to learn... in a dune buggy!

I too did my first driving in a dune buggy.. in Baja.. and once I turned 16, that buggy became my 'car' (it was a street legal Myers Manx, 1650cc VW, with roof, and side curtains for wet weather)...

In April, 1974 was my first trip to Mexico without parents... my school friend (also 16) spent a week driving around Baja Norte... This photo Pat took of me on the road to El Marmol:

got my 1st license at 14 yo in Billings, Mt (1951) and learned to drive hauling sugar beet pulp from refinery to dairy farm in a 5 ton dump truck on public highways
