Air Rifles/Pellet Guns Okay in Mexico?

BajaDave - 11-3-2010 at 03:01 PM

Can anyone confirm if air rifles are okay to bring, and if so, has anyone been hassled about one at a military inspection?

I love plinking cans and such once and a while.

Martyman - 11-3-2010 at 03:18 PM

We use slingshots bought at the curios in Ensenada. The trick is to have a lot of cans to plink.

Must be a misspell. Surely, you meant CATS, right???

Lordy, am I gonna catch it, now..............

Anyway, they're sold in the Sorianas down here, so I cant imagine they are too illegal.

Dave, did you actually use the term "plinking cans" on a public message board?????? Oh my!!!!:wow:

They sell pellet guns in the grocery stores.

The allowed caliber may be involved....such as .22 as opposed to .177.

This question has been asked here no less tha fifty thousand times and all we have ever had was guesses. Without hiring an attorney to research the law....we are left with nothing other than guesses.

In other words....no one really knows.

Hire an attorney.

From my upper deck I think I can reach your windows if I pump my Remington .20 about 10 times.

Pompano - 11-3-2010 at 04:27 PM

.177 is fine.

.22 or larger requires permits.

Please remit 50 pesos. :D

Cardon Man - 11-3-2010 at 04:30 PM

5.5 cal ( .22 ) air rifles are readily available and legal. I bought one in Cabo San Lucas about 2 years ago, sin problemas.

Sure, why not. Fill it with .177 BBs, and use a 2000psi nitrogen bottle for propellant. That sounds like it meets the letter of the law.

Damm Pompy is that you behind that cannon?
Did you ever meet a Chipmunk you didn't like?

mulegemichael - 11-3-2010 at 08:16 PM

we've got pellet guns down here and have never had a problema passing through the checkpoints with them....whaaaa?...they're gonna check if it's .177 or .22???....don't think so...in their minds a pellet gun is a pellet gun is a pellet gun

As Pompano says...

Dave - 11-3-2010 at 09:08 PM

They are legal. However, if challenged at an army checkpoint or by the local police, your chances of keeping the weapon are 50/50. ;D

Pellet Guns????

bajaguy - 11-3-2010 at 09:23 PM

.177 caliber...???? .22 caliber....????? Plinking cans...?????

try this........a CO2 powered golf ball or tennis ball launcher. Using a golf ball, I can plink a can at about 600 yards with this puppy!!!!

All these pee-shooters are only gonna get you killed. The bad guys have real guns and will be happy to demonstrate their shooting ability.

However.... if you just enjoy plinking or protecting your garden they're pretty cool.

RnR - 11-4-2010 at 07:18 AM

This observation is a little off the actual BB gun legality topic but is one those "Ok in Mexico, These days are gone in the US ...."

There was a traveling carnival in town last weekend. Rides, sideshows, skill games, etc. One of the skill games was a shooting gallery. With real BB guns.

The attendant would load 20 BB's into the single pump guns and hand it to whomever gave him 20 pesos. Some 4 and 5 yr old boys were pretty good at hitting targets, just not all of the targets were in the shooting gallery.

Just to make sure that those kids (and any other overimbibing adults) didn't get too out of hand, there was also a strong police presence at the carnival. About twenty cops, Policia Preventiva, some quite well armed with full automatic rifles...

Pompano - 11-4-2010 at 08:16 AM

Let's put this question of pellet guns to rest..once and for all.

Carumba!..Even Zulema has one!

A while back, Mex passed a law which allowed
one to have a small amount of Marijuana
for personal consumption, no one raised
their hand to to volunteer to be the first
test case, just roll up to a checkpoint with
a bag of weed on the front seat. I like the
phrase Driving While Gringo, maybe
something is technically legal, but
sometimes not worth the what if's

For sure. I don't think that law was passed for foreigners anyway. It was coupled with a rehab program. I doubt Mexico wants to send a gringo to rehab.

Dan-O......I can build you one for a slight materials fee.......labor is free

Cypress - 11-5-2010 at 04:19 AM

bajaguy, Plink a can at 600 yards? Are you sure? I can't do that with my Remington 700 30.06. Wonder what it'd do if you loaded it with a pint of dried rice or corn kernals?:light:

bajaguy - 11-5-2010 at 06:38 AM

Cypress......just a tongue in cheek response...not accurate to plink cans, however can get pretty close to a specific target...but I can get 400-600 yards out of a golf ball depending on the CO2 PSI I put into the air chamber.

With the tennis ball barrel I can get about 100/150 yards......great for launching tennis balls at the beach for the dogs to chase

805gregg - 11-5-2010 at 07:06 AM

I just saw a Ruger pellet rifle that had a 1500 fps muzzle speed. That could be lethal.

Cypress - 11-5-2010 at 10:43 AM

Bajaguy, That's still a mean looking contraption you've got there. I'd throw my hands up if it was pointed at me.

805gregg, Pellet rifles have always been deadly, on the same par with a .22 short.
