Caught my first Dorado yesterday and now I'm hooked. Looking for an online store with good prices and selection. Also looking for any used equipment. Thanks!

Good site from the Berkley/Fenwick/AbuGarcia/Stren/Penn companies where they dump their over-runs etc. You just have to go there daily and know your market - about 75% of their stuff is so-so on the pricing but every once in a while they have screaming deals. It's been my observation that mid-level priced fishing gear has really improved. The cheap stuff is still junk - your $35 "deep-sea" rod will not last long. Aren't you close to Pescador? He probably knows more about rods/reels than the rest of us combined.

Oh, if you're back in the states for a few weeks, then Craig's list can be a great source. Old fisherman die from time to time and their kids will sell all of Dad's fishing stuff for next to nothing. Here's how it works: dad gets bit by the fishing bug in his 40s and starts buying rods and reels but these break or don't work very well so in his 50s he upgrades to much better middle of the road equipment. Dad then retires and with his final bonus check upgrades his reels to a couple of Avets. Uh-oh, can't have an Avet on just any old rod, so he gets a couple of $200-$300 rods; and for the rest of his life he fishes these. When he dies, his fishing buddies/kids take the Avet combos and sell the unused stuff in the closet. For a hundred bucks you can walk off with a bunch of perfectly serviceable stuff. The tackle hos will look down their noses at you, but if you can handle that, you're good to go.

www.Charkbait.com has a great selection at reasonable prices and the classified ad section of www.bloodydecks.com can sometimes have some smokin' deals on used.

Santiago is right on with advice on searching Craigslist. I just bought a small fortune's worth of excellent tackle in San Diego..for a song.

I also went shopping at Squidco on Midway and Harbor Dr, San Diego, Fisherman's Landing on Shelter Island, Point Loma, and another place on Rosecran's. Very good tackle there, too..and of course, very high prices.

All in all, I'm a happy shopper.

p.s. Willy, keep your eyes open flyers around Mulege..quite often I see some Tackle For Sale ads put up. Check places like Saul's window, laundromat wall, bars, taco stands, etc around the square. Also La Tienda store downtown has new tackle..good stuff, tried and true.

How big was the dorado...how...and where? Tight lines, amigo.

Another vote here for Craigslist. Recently picked up a couple of really nice, hardly used reels 'n rods in San Diego for less than the price of just one of the reels by itself new.

They even threw in a bucket of tackle to boot.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'll be shopping today. Pompano the Dorado was just south of Ineass ( sp, I'm new). On the boat he was small, 16 lbs or so, last night he was 24 lbs at the bar. I'm in Mulege btw.

Hola willyAirstream,

if you are buying over the internet, sign on to " bloodydecks.com " as there is always fishing gear for sale from the high and low ends. also, if you have any fishing questions, you can post them and you should get several responses.

if you are not all that familiar with fishing equipment, go to a tackle shop and form an alliance when you feel comfortable enough to trust one...or more. i have found that the larger chain sporting goods stores usually do not have staff that is familiar with your needs and the independent shops offer more reliable information.

where do you reside and what species are you after ?

BIEN SALUD, DA RAT

hey willy...stop by #54 in the oasis; i know someone who has some rods/reels etc for sale here locally...almost your next door neighbor, as a matter of fact

Pompano - 11-7-2010 at 04:00 PM

And I have some pickerel rigs that I might as well let go ..for free. I can't find those damn pickerel around here, anyway.

Russ - 11-7-2010 at 05:15 PM

Come to the Punta Chivato Sale next Sunday if you don't find something there I have some OK combos I'll let go to you for a cheap to reasonable trade. Plus there will be a lot of fishermen/women there that can probably set you up with something just right from their arsenals.
Come to the Sale anyway. There will be food and a party atmosphere.

willyAirstream - 11-7-2010 at 06:36 PM

mulegemichael , great!!!! I'll come by late afternoon tomorrow.

Russ, We'll come to the sale and check it out. Any excuse to go to Punta Caivato

Pompano, May see you tomorrow at Anna's, noon?

Thanks for all the other ideas/suggestions. All you guys are terrific.

I'm in Mulege full time, only ocean fishing experience has been mackerel and blues in Gloucester Mass and once in awhile tuna and sword :)
Last 2 days we were trolling for Dorado, hitting lots of Bonita, some skip jack and a nice barracuda ( cuda ceviche was great), using feathers. Then with Mirrors a few dinner fish. I've had beginners luck and having a blast.
