Pan Bimbo has been in Mexican areas of So. Cal., like around San Diego, for quite a while....ten years that I know of. I'm sure it's longer.
The unfortunate thing is there's an identical word with a very different meaning in the English language.

After a camping trip, I accidentally left in my car a loaf of Sara Lee White Bread. I found it on the floor of the back seat about 3 months later while loading up for another excursion. The bread had no mold at all, was perhaps a bit dried out.

I'm thinking Sara Lee has always used the Bimbo bread recipe.
Now with the buyout they can be more honest about it.

BajaBlanca - 11-10-2010 at 11:29 AM

that's my point exactly Dennis !! Can you imagine changing the name in the States to Bimbo ???? would not be politically correct, perhaps, but sure would be hysterically funny !!

DENNIS - 11-10-2010 at 11:37 AM

I doubt they'll be changing much at all, Blanca. There's an enormous market for Bimbo products up there...............more every day.
In most of those neighborhoods, Sara Lee would be the stranger.

Mexico Takes Over

Bajahowodd - 11-10-2010 at 02:42 PM

Probably many folks were unaware how large Bimbo was.

Do you know that this Mexican company is the world's largest supplier of building materials and number three in cement production?

Or how about Gruma Corp? World's largest producer of corn flour and tortillas. Primarily know in the US for its Mission brand items.

astrobaja - 11-10-2010 at 02:43 PM

Natalie Ann: thats pretty scary isn't it!! To call either Bimbo or Sara Lee "bread" is a leap of faith!

SUPPORT your LOCAL bakeries!

bajafam - 11-10-2010 at 03:56 PM

We have a Cemex plant in our town...Show Low, AZ. And I have several off shoots of Bimbo bread in my cupboard ~ oroweat, and holsum...as well as the bread I make on my own :) Nothing like fresh baked bread, y'all! :)

capt. mike - 11-10-2010 at 04:59 PM

Couldn't find who the owner of Grupo Bimbo is but they sell over 7,000 different products and own 95 factories in North America, Central, and South America.

Stock holders own it.
Selling for ~$8.00 a share right now ( -4% for the day) with a 52 week range of $6.25 - $9.05. I looked into buying some back in 2008 at $6.00/share but chickened out.

Just give me a pone of cornbread. Easy to make and you know it's fresh. Or some of that good ole New Orleans style French Bread. ;)

BajaBlanca - 11-12-2010 at 04:16 PM

yup, the Lebanese one

but what a HUGE company, someone is doing something right.

toneart - 11-12-2010 at 04:33 PM

Blanca,
Maybe you sold too soon.;)

Bajahowodd - 11-12-2010 at 05:31 PM

It's about the money. Plain and simple. Anyone ever notice those companies that continually go public, then private, and back and forth? Creating wealth from nothing. Maybe with the exception of employees that find their jobs outsourced, or their benefits diminished.

BajaBlanca - 11-12-2010 at 05:54 PM

Toners ... I folded due to extenuating circumstances...sure wish I could say I sold, even early hahaha

Baja&Back - 11-12-2010 at 06:03 PM

Del Hogar totopos are the BEST corn chips in Baja! Yum.
Maybe soon available in US???

toneart - 11-12-2010 at 11:28 PM

Blanca,

I think Pan Bimbo makes my stomach extenuate! :o:lol:
