Tourist visa at Tecate

GrummanRV - 11-11-2010 at 04:07 PM

Hello everyone, this is my first post so bear with me.
I'm driving a 26 ft. RV towing a car, we plan on crossing at Tecate and are wondering if someone can tell us the best way to park and get our visa's. There is no parking at the crossing on the Mexican side.
Thanks

GrummanRV- Welcome!

One block before the border there is a little shopping mini mall atop a small hill on your left. On the street just below it is a currency window. Turn left just beyond it. Just a short ways up make another left into the mini mall. There is not a lot of room for an RV pulling a vehicle, but I have been able to park my pickup towing a boat.

If someone can stay with the vehicle, all the better. You may have to park along a "no parking curb" but I did it.

Also, keep an eye out for space at the curb on the main road, on either side of the street, in that same general area. You might get lucky. You may have to make a u turn.

Are you an RV dealer or repair shop?

Just want to chime in, given the rig. You really do not want to drive South to Ensenada right now, given the construction in progress. Either hang a right on the toll road over to Bl 2000, or cross at San Ysidro. Just my opinion. The highway headed down through Guadalupe Valley is in a world of hurt right now.

See Trip Reports forum here and read details of getting from Tecate to the Corredor 2000 (takes you to Hwy. 1 just south of Rosarito). San Ysidro/ Tijuana crossing would cut 2 hours from your drive.

Thanks everyone. We've never gone theSan Ysidro/ Tijuana route before, have always been leery of the town and the confusion getting on the right lanes etc. Our rig only plods along at 50mph/80kph so there's no advantage of a bigger better road.
Please some one tell me I'm been silly and there's no reason not to go through TJ.

There's no reason not to go through TJ. I do it all the time. Trickiest thing is that as you exit the secondary after getting visas, you have to immediately move over one lane, as the right lane turns into town. Proceed up the bridge and then get back over to the right. Signs are pretty clear. Once you've made it down the ramp and drive along the border fence, piece of cake. Just one more turn to the right and you're on the toll road.
