Santispac internet

absinvestor - 11-13-2010 at 10:32 AM

Last year we spent a couple of weeks at Santispac and really enjoyed it. This year we will head back the latter part of January for two or three months at either Santispac or Burro. Unfortunately we do all our banking, bill paying etc on the internet and it is a real problem to go more than 7 or 8 days without internet. Also, we travel in a 31 ft motorhome without tow so it is a hassle remove items from the palapa and pack up just to go into Mulege or Loreto to get a connection. (By occasionally eating at the local restaurant and purchasing seafood etc from the beach vendors we can easily stay continuously for two or three months without driving anywhere.) Are there any options as satellite connections that are somewhat reasonable that can be purchased without a long term contract?

wiltonh - 11-13-2010 at 10:42 AM

We stayed at Santispac last week. There was no Telcel access at the beach so satellite is probably your only choice. I have not looked recently but in the past it was about $60 to $70 per month and you had to sign a contract.

Thanks Wilton. I have never dealt with a satellite company. Any recommendations on where to start my search to find one? Ron

Santispac internet

CasaManzana - 11-13-2010 at 11:25 AM

Russ at Anna's restaurant there on Santispac has internet for his own personal use. You might get him to cut you a deal on using his, otherwise it's www.hughesnet.com that works down here

absinvestor - 11-13-2010 at 01:24 PM

Thanks. We eat at Russ's a lot when we are camped at Santispac so I'll see if I can't work out a deal to pay him something to be able to occasionally pay a bill or check emails. Thanks for the tip on Hughesnet. I'll call them Monday but looks like they want a 18 mo contract. Thanks again. Ron

absinvestor - 11-13-2010 at 03:32 PM

I reached HughesNet. Unfortunately they do require an 18 month contract which doesn't make much sense since we'll only need it for 2 or 3 months. In case we can't make a deal to use Russ's internet, looks like we'll just make the short trip to Mulege every 9 or 10 days. We didn't go into Mulege last trip but seems like a pretty tight fit for a larger motorhome. Is there a place convenient to the main road that offers wi-fi? Also, when we were planning last year's trip we had offers from MulegeMike (Mulege) and Pompano (Coyote) to use their internet. If either of those offers are still available we would be happy to pay for the priviledge. Thanks Ron

Doesn't the store/restaurant across the street from El Burro, Bertha's I think, have WiFi? I think there is a place near/across from the Pemex just south of Mulege that might have it also. Not sure tho, I make it a point to not need a computer when I travel.

Thanks. We're going to look at a palapa for sale in El Burro so a restaurant across the street would be really convenient. I don't remember seeing a restaurant in that area but I wasn't looking. Does anybody know if the restaurant is still open and if it has wi-fi? Thanks Ron

Mas internet stuff

CasaManzana - 11-14-2010 at 08:10 AM

Bertha's on El Burro does not have internet. But right next to the Palapa Restaurant (which just closed) on the road across and near the roadway Pemex is Hugo's new internet & WiFi restaurant place-open 7 days 10AM-9PM. Going south, it's on the right just before the Pemex

Baja&Back - 11-14-2010 at 08:40 AM

Last year, the B&B on the hill between Santispac & Posada Concepcion had an unsecured WiFi thru Hughsnet. You used to be able to sit on the roadside by the fallen over sailboat and log on. Even if they have secured it, you might nake a deal with them for access. A 10 minute walk with your laptop.

Otherwise, folks are always driving into town for something ... and you're a friendly guy, right?
;D

Thanks to Casa Manzana and Baja Back for the additional info. To Baja Back- yep I am totally friendly- would gladly offer a ride to anyone needing it but personally hesitant to ask for the same. To Casa Manzana- I have to admit that I wasn't paying attention (when driving the road around Santispac) and can't picture the Pemex you refer to. Is it on Hwy 1 near Mulege? Thanks again. Ron

If you do come into town, Cuesta Real RV Park/Hotel has 2 internet connections, one sat. and one DSL. If you just want to pull in for an hour to use the net, it would be no problem. Or spend a night, 200 pesos, do your laundry 30-40 pesos, free hot showers/bath, dinner 80 pesos and Pepe always entertains.
Located1/2 km north of the1st tope coming into Mulege.
Today and every Sunday they have an all you can eat buffet or from the menu for 80 pesos.

Saul's Palapa closed ??????
What's up with that ??
He's been a fixture for years and always good food.

To Willie Airstream- Cuesta Real sounds great. Also, will be nice to do the laundry and eat a good meal. Seemed to me that, in the past, I read that the streets in Mulege were narrow and that one should not drive a 31 ft motorhome into town. I'm guessing from your recommendation that I won't have any trouble getting into or out of Cuesta Real? Thanks Ron

Saul has opened up his place at the building just south of where he was in the building where they sold furniture and stuff. It was really needed as the old restaurant was falling to pieces and was in bad disrepair. The new place looks great and should be a welcome place for those that have enjoyed Saul for years.

Yes, its the Pemex station just a mile or so south of Mulege on Hwy. 1.

The wifi place is in the nice little convenience store just north of and across from the Pemex on the west side of the highway in what was the 11-7 store (can't remember its name now). There's wifi and computers and computer repair by Hugo who speaks English, btw.

You won't have any trouble entering or exiting Cuesta Real. The is a turn around area that will let you drive out. Just watch for overhead wire clearance. You do Not want to take a MoHo of any size into town ( or even a TT), as you have said, roads are narrow!

Stop by and have a beer!

Some fine tuning........

CasaManzana - 11-14-2010 at 09:06 PM

Saul closed the Palapa Restaurant and moved to La Paz for reasons unknown to me. The Palapa needed extensive repairs so that may have been part of that. Hugo and Josefina were operating in the old 11-7 store but renamed it Casa Azul when the US attorneys from 7-11 came to their door to object to the name. Hugo now has the 'astisan' place next door...no Saul is now involved from the palapa. But you might think so because Hugo 'borrowed' the PALAPA restaurant sign to put in front of his new place until he get his new sign naming the restaurant EL GECKO

Bob and Susan - 11-15-2010 at 07:10 AM

more fine tuning...

the internet is 20 pesos an hour
they have 2 routers

the service is DSL (FAST!!!)
i have made several phone calls
using skype and yahoo messanger in the past two weeks
the connection using the wireless is great

the kitchen is newly painted and CLEAN
it's open so you can see where the food is being prepared

there is some construction right now
some new rock and windows
but it's nice there

it's not directly across from the pemex but
pretty close
lots of parking in front
and easy for trailers and motorhomes

You guys are great!!Thanks a million. Ron
