Apartment Hunting

DominicBN - 11-16-2010 at 09:28 AM

Hi Nomads,
In about two weeks I'm flying to Baja for the first time.
I plan on staying a couple months but I'm having a problem trying to find an apartment.
I've checked craigs and backpage but very few listings.
How did you find a place to rent :?:

Hi longlegs
What's your opinion on La Paz and San Jose del Cabo.
Why did you choose La Paz?

Without knowing the area you have in mind, your budget, and the type of place you need, it's hard to offer advice. Speaking in general, for La Paz at least, most short-term rentals advertised online are "vacation rentals" and priced accordingly. You might have better luck checking into a hotel or B&B and conducting your search locally.

Hi Kate,
I need a one bedroom apartment for just myself.
Would $500 a month seem reasonable for La Paz or San Jose del Cabo?
Location near shopping, fitness center, car rental.

DominicNB, I'm going to answer your question with questions of my own.

What are you looking for? Tourist destination? One-time Vacation? Intermingling with local folks? Isolated privacy? Business? Are you visiting for 2 months to figure out whether or not the area is a good fit for you to relocate to? Do you speak Spanish? What amenities are important to you? Beaches? Arts/cultural? Fishing? Nightlife? Flying under the radar of America's Most Wanted?;) If you're scoping out an area for potential permanent residence, how do you deal with heat? You'll be here during the cooler part of the year, but it's important that you understand summers here can be over 100F daily for months on end, not to mention very humid.

Surely "near shopping, fitness center, car rental" can't be the full extent of your preferred requirements wish-list!

See the point I'm trying to make? I ended up in La Paz for my own unique reasons....I didn't want to live in a tourist destination of somewhere like Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. I wanted to be close to good medical care, near an international airport. Each of us ends up where we end up for our our unique personal reasons & requirements. The reasons why La Paz is perfect for me could very well be the exact reasons you'd hate it.:smug:

Try Googling La Paz, BCS departamentos renta to see a larger selection of local listings of potential apartments for rent & pick 'n choose between long term-rates versus higher-end shorter-term vacation rates. You could use the same search for San Jose del Cabo....just change the city in the URL.:bounce:

Provide more information & you'll get answers best....or at minimum, better....suited to your requirements.

Private Plane. Charter. Big Birds? I suppose the airport size might be contributing factor of decision of locations....

Legs summed it up perfectly. Vague, generic questions yield results in kind. Many folks here will provide amazing resources, if you just get more specific in your request.

I have available in La Paz an ample fully furnished 1 BR apt located downtown 2 blocks from Cathedral and 5 blocks to Malecon. 500 USD per month including gas, internet, DISHTV and cleaning twice a week.

The last thing a renter should devulge is how much he wants to pay.

Good thing he didn't say $1k per month. It would be the most expensive 1 bedroom in La Paz.

Dennis, SQ73, Your're not suggesting the $500
is nothing more than pure coincidence?
Like it wasn't $275 yesterday? A longshot
would be the La Paz newspaper, I believe it is
Sud de Calif, or close to that spelling.
If you don't have adequate Spanish, I'm sure
you could pay someone to interrupt.
I can't think of a more pleasant place to
be in Baja
than strolling down the La Paz
malecon at sunset, I would go for it

I have no idea what you just said. Give your two brain cells a rest and try later.
