road to cabo pulmo

newtobaja - 11-21-2010 at 06:05 PM

Is the road in the east cape paved? I was looking at the National Geog Baja South map and it seems to indicate that road from SJdelC to La Ribera via Cabo Pulmo is paved. Is that correct? My Moon guide says its not paved.
How far is it paved ?
Will a mini-van be able to reach Cabo Pulmo?
It seems the best way to get to Cabo Pulmo is form the north i.e via La ribera where I think its paved till La ribera from Highway 1.

thanks

Hi - there is some road info/maps here.

I travelled with a tourist group in a bigger passenger van in Jan. 2010. The road is in good condition, and is a beautiful drive from the turn off from Mex. 1. There is a section of washboard as you make the final approach. I think you would be fine if you take your time and enjoy the view.

The East Cape Road from San Jose to Cabo Pulmo is not paved. Highway 1 north to La Ribera is paved and it is paved another 10 miles south of La Ribera then there is 6 miles of good gravel to Cabo Pulmo -- graded last week. From Cabo Pulmo south it is a fair dirt/gravel road to Vinorama. Vinorama south to San Jose del Cabo is rough and slow with lots of washboard, but very scenic and close to the beach. 2 wheel drive is no problem with lots of American homes along the way. An alternative from Vinorama is West to Palo Escopeta and the airport at San Jose del Cabo which is fairly well maintained. 30 to 40 minute drive from Vinorama to San Jose del Cabo.

Drive carefully on it, graded last week but some nasty sharp rocks ate a tire. Nimodo.
