irenemm - 11-22-2010 at 07:57 PM

I want to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.
If any one living here in the Vicente Guerrero area or traveling by on Thanksgiving and wants a traditional dinner Please stop in.
We have been doing Thanksgiving Dinners for 30 years now. We have dinner from 2:00 p.m. on. Nothing else on the menu. Turkey or ham or combo.
I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful day.
Remember when giving thanks don't forget to Thank the Soldiers and the families that wait at home for them.
Have a great day.

DENNIS - 11-22-2010 at 08:01 PM

Thanks, Irene. Have a happy Thanksgiving. When I close my eyes and take a deep whiff, I can smell your kitchen. It's wonderful.

woody with a view - 11-22-2010 at 08:11 PM

Thanks, Irene. we will not be in your neighborhood for Thanksgiving, but we have 3 slots open during the next 2 months and we plan to drop in, either coming or going.

irenemm - 11-22-2010 at 08:12 PM

Thank you Dennis
we are cooking 35 turkeys this year. Up from last year. All worth it.
My favorite day of the year. And this year it is also my Husband birthday.

wessongroup - 11-22-2010 at 08:14 PM

35???? How do you do that?
I know that some of the bakerys here in town will cook turkeys for customers. That's a pretty good service.

Hola, Irene...

Pompano - 11-22-2010 at 08:59 PM

Especially for you...Turkey #36!

IT'S GONNA BE ANOTHER HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

irenemm - 11-22-2010 at 09:05 PM

oh that looks really really good, enjoy

@ dennis have to be very organized. I have many secrets. You start early
We have many dinners to go on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. so It is becomes easier every year.
My first year I cooked 2 turkey and no one would celebrate Thanksgiving with us. Now you think it is the Holiday here. I love it.
we will serve 200 to 250 on Thursday.
love it.

Paulina - 11-22-2010 at 09:08 PM

Happy Thanksgiving Irene and to the rest of my baja family. I was waiting for a Thanksgiving post to appear so I could chime in.

Yesterday we cooked up a batch of Docsmom's cranberry sauce recipe. (the best ever, not too sweet, not too bitter) While it was simmering on the stove top I did a nomad search, coming up with a Thanksgiving thread from a couple of years ago. It was fun to look back on.

I am thankful for many things. My baja Nomad extended family is high on the list.

Saludos,
Paulina <*)))>{

irenemm - 11-22-2010 at 09:16 PM

Paulina
gonna cook that up tomorrow. Only one that get fresh in the rest. are the ones that ask. Other wise canned stuff. So if you stop by and want the fresh stuff you gotta ask.
Have a great Thanksgiving Paulina

windgrrl - 11-22-2010 at 09:42 PM

Best wishes to you all and an extra helping of veggies for Pompano!

Cypress - 11-23-2010 at 07:52 PM

Gonna start smoking a turkey tonight. Hope the smoker gets hot enough. :?: Takes about 10 hrs. under normal conditions. It's 0 degrees and the temp is dropping.:o Happy Thanksgiving everybody.

Bob H - 11-23-2010 at 08:31 PM

Wow, 35 turkeys at one time. Would like to know the process for that.

Anyway, we smoke a turkey every year on the Weber grill with the smoke of applewood. Here's the bacon we put on near the end for appetizers (and juice for the gravy that falls in the pan below). Unbelievable!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

You guys are making me hungry-Happy Thanksgiving to all!

oladulce - 11-23-2010 at 10:03 PM

Wow irenemm, what a marathon in your kitchen. Kinda like Woodstock- THREE DAYS MAN !!! (if I was old enough to know about that sort of thing).

We'll be pulling in to Posada Don Diego a few days after T-day but I don't imagine there will be any left-overs if your holiday offerings are like your everyday food. Maybe the delicious aroma will still linger in the valley at least.

Enjoy and prop your feet up now and then.

Bob H- I've never imagined a turkey in a glamor shot until now.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING NOMADS

'TWAS THE NIGHT OF THANKSGIVING
BUT I JUST COULDN’T SLEEP.
I TRIED COUNTING BACKWARDS,
I TRIED COUNTING SHEEP.

THE LEFTOVERS BECKONED-
THE DARK MEAT AND WHITE,
BUT IF FOUGHT THE TEMPTATION
WITH ALL OF MY MIGHT.

TOSSING AND TURNING WITH ANTICIPATION,
THE THOUGHT OF A SNACK BECAME INFATUATION.
SO, I RACED TO THE KITCHEN, FLUNG OPEN THE DOOR,
AND GAZED AT THE FRIDGE, FULL OF GOODIES GALORE.
GOBBLED UP TURKEY AND BUTTERED POTATOES,
PICKLES & CARROTS, BEANS AND TOMATOES.

I FELT MYSELF SWELLING, SO PLUMB AND ROUND,
‘TIL ALL OF A SUDDEN, I ROSE OFF THE GROUND.
I CRASHED THROUGH THE CEILING, FLOATING INTO THE SKY,
WITH A MOUTHFUL OF PUDDING, AND A HANDFUL OF PIE.
BUT I MANAGED TO YELL AS I SOARED PAST THE TREES..
HAPPY EATINGTO ALL – PASS THE CRANBERRIES, PLEASE.

MAY YOUR STUFFING BE TASTY,
AND YOUR TURKEY BE PLUMP.
MAY YOUR POTATOES AND GRAVY HAVE NARY A LUMP.
MAY YOUR YAMS BE DELICIOUS,
MAY YOUR PIES TAKE THE PRIZE,
MAY YOUR THANKSGIVING DINNER STAY OFF YOUR THIGHS!!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL

Deep-Fried Turkey - Baja Style

Pompano - 11-24-2010 at 09:55 AM

Amigos Bob and Matt (Mateo) use a time-honored method to deep fry a large turkey in peanut oil.

Hey, it was done it about 40 minutes and turned out delicious, as did all of Mateo's recipes. Black-eyed cuban beans accompanied.

Burros Beach - back in the day.

Bon apetito!

Pompano - 11-24-2010 at 12:54 PM

Hey Irene...what is the location of your RV park?

I will stay there tonight..

..if I EVER get out of Chula Vista marina RV park, that is..huff puff...

Pompano-
I bet she's busy cooking.

At the the southern end of the town of Vincente Guerrero, (about a mile past the main stoplights in town) you'll come to a street with a propane filling station on the right and a CFE power substation across the street. Turn RIGHT at the propane place.

Take this road about a mile toward the ocean and you'll come to Posada Don Diego. Did you ever go to Don Pepe's restaurant/RV park? You turn on the same street and you'll drive past Don Pepe's.

Pompano - 11-24-2010 at 01:05 PM

sThanks...I found the site, read it with a martini....and write it all down..be there in a shake of a lamb's tail.

Hey Pomp... I've had my turkey fried also... excellent and quick! But, I love my smoked bacon on top of the smoked turkey too...

Happy Thanksgiving!

BajaGringo - 11-24-2010 at 01:21 PM

We'll be there tomorrow Irene to share in the feast!

Happy Thanksgiving to all...

Opps...

Pompano - 11-24-2010 at 02:35 PM

Well, Murphy's Law is in full swing..and just struck up here in Chula Vista...dang.

During a regular inspection while fueling and oil change, my Southwind's brakes showed mucho wear..almost metal to metal. Somebody has went over way too many mountains lately.

Figuring I didn't want to end up plowing through BajaCactus's Pemex station in El Rosario...or tumble to the bottom of The Devil's Grade north of Sta. Rosalia...I decided to get them fixed NOW.

Sooo... it looks like I will be slightly delayed in reaching that turkey dinner, Irene & crew.

Carumba!

But save me a drummie or a wing, por favor?...because, like Chief Dan George's great line in the movie 'The Outlaw Josie Wales' ....."We shall endeavor to persevere."

BajaBlanca - 11-24-2010 at 04:59 PM

Murphys law indeed Pompano...what a bad break BUT it is mucho mejor to catch that kinda stuff before you need those brakes !! Now we need to help you find a place to have turkey !!!!!!!!

Happy holiday everyone ... I had never heard of putting bacon on a turkey til just 4 years ago ... what planet was I on ? All of you seem to be in the know :)

Many many athings to be thankful for and all the calm peaceful informative friendly helpful types are at the top of the list . Hope that includes YOU.

oladulce - 11-24-2010 at 05:55 PM

I feel for you Pompano. I've got my own mini holiday crisis. My Mexican MABE oven just croaked and I'm responsible for an apple pie for tomorrow's feast at the casa of nomad "CP" & company.

BigWooo has his head in the oven and parts are spread everywhere and it's not looking good. Looks like i'll get to inaugurate the oven in the travel trailer out back. Thank goodness we have that one, and thank goodness I'm already home in Baja!

Buena suerte to you.

longlegsinlapaz - 11-24-2010 at 06:57 PM

Oladulce....you have an oven in the camper too....unless you got the really stripped down model! ;) Please tell Woooo to get his head out of the oven!!

BajaGringo - 11-24-2010 at 07:07 PM

Hey Roger - do you have no brakes left? if they are still working good enough I would try and make it across the border. Lots of shops down here will be open early tomorrow and probably cost you less as well.

Just saying...

Hola amigo...

Done deal here. Got all new rear brakes, a few beers, 1 martini, etc...was definetely in need of. I would not have wanted to go any further. The bill was not small..nor too large..a fair price.

$775.87

The owner offered a free campsite with all hookups, so here I am..till morning. Thanks for the thought...guten abend.

BajaGringo - 11-24-2010 at 07:17 PM

Good deal and have a safe trip. Maybe we'll cross paths at Irene's tomorrow...

toneart - 11-24-2010 at 07:47 PM

Thank you for the Thanksgiving greeting, Irene. I wish I could be there. WHY AREN'T I IN BAJA NOW? WAH! Here is what happened to me and my neighbors:

Our mountain community above Nevada City, California has been hit with the worst snow storm in modern history in terms of damage. It is a wreck! We have been without power since Friday night. I finally got off the hill Monday. All the roads out of there had been blocked with fallen trees, electric wires and telephone poles. I took a chance and went up the steep icy hill that is closed during snow conditions. I made it with my 4 wheel drive and didn't spin the wheels near the summit. Whew!

This snow storm came about three or four weeks too early. All the trees still have their leaves. That traps the snow and gets very heavy, snapping branches or pulling down big trees. It is mostly the Black Oaks that are being damaged. The Live Oaks, Pines and Cedar do better in the snow. The beautiful Japanese Elms and other decorative trees were in full bloom with bright yellows and reds. Now they are almost total losses. We just had Indian Summer heat a week ago. Last night the temperature low got down to 15 degrees. I went back up to the house to turn on all the interior faucets to a slow trickle so as to prevent the pipes to freeze. They are wrapped, but still......

Right now I am in a motel in Grass Valley. I was lucky to find a room in a flea bag motel that is often in the Police Blotter in the Grass Valley Union. Hundreds of PG&E workers have been dispatched here from all over the state. There are blue trucks everywhere. They have taken all the available hotel rooms in Grass Valley and Nevada City.Tomorrow, T-Day, I will move over to the historic Holbrooke Hotel, where Presidents and also Mark Twain stayed often.

I thought I was going to have to go to Sacramento to a Motel 6(they accept dogs). This is better. I am closer to home and can have Thanksgiving dinner and every other meal in town...Turkey at the Holbrooke.

My house has no electric power. PG&E workmen have told me it could be a week or more before power is restored in that area. In addition, my propane shut off and I can't get hot water. (I don't know why (?) I hadn't had a shower since Friday. I have about 20 trees or branches down on my property. Many people have had trees crash through their roofs and on their vehicles. Mine are still intact.

When I can get back into my house I don't know what damage I will find, or if the wires to my house are still connected. Then there will be lots of tree work to be done. I will have to get a tree man in to cut off the hanging widow makers.

I was lucky to get a room with wifi. My cell phone was dead because I couldn't charge it. Now all is OK. Paco, my dog, is here with me too.

Between the Mulege floods and now this, it is hard to catch a break from catastrophic weather events. Well, at least I am safe and in a warm place and not stuck in bumper to bumper holiday traffic. I hope the bedbugs don't bite!:o

Pompano - 11-24-2010 at 07:53 PM

Damn Tony..that's terrible news.......want to use my motorhome? It's got new brakes!

Bob H - 11-24-2010 at 07:58 PM

Wow Tony, what an event you had! I'm sooo sorry you are going through stuff like this. At least you are now in a safe, warm place, with Paco!

DianaT - 11-24-2010 at 08:00 PM

Tony,
Thanks for the post---we were going to try and get to Grass Valley for Thanksgiving, but some illness got in the way, so we were going to head up to visit my mother-in-law right after Thanksgiving. Guess we need to watch what happens with the weather.

Which direction and how far are you out of Nevada City? Glad you are save and sound. And stay WARM---think Baja

But you and everyone have a great T-day!.

Thank you, Bob H. You should see the hundreds of PG&E workers and their trucks. It is amazing that our emergency is drawing so much of their resources. They are filling up all the hotels and restaurants. I think they will get us all online sooner than they first thought. They are really on it!

Diana,
I am seven miles further up Banner Lava Cap from downtown Nevada City. Nevada City and the Brunswick also had major power outages but they are restored now. Most of Grass Valley was spared. The two towns did get lots of rain and then snow. I am at around 3500' and got two and a half feet of snow.

We are supposed to get more Friday night and Saturday. Then it will clear up again. What day were you planning to come up? Send me a U2U and I will keep you updated (if my cable is also intact). I think I will be home Friday. It sounds like the power outage will be restored by then. The temperatures are down to 15 to 20 degrees during the night. Very cold for here. Also way too early in the season.

If you come to Grass Valley I don't think you would be impacted by the weather like I was.

Saludos,
Don Antonio de Burro Frio

Thanks Tony---- not sure yet when we will be able to leave---Sounds like Grass Valley is ok, but sounds like the motels were full and we are not ready to stay at the Bret Harte where she is----no yet. :-)

Guess I need to see what warm clothes I can dig out---sounds a little cold for the Birkenstocks, unless of course I can find some heavy wool socks.

Have a great Thanksgiving Dinner and good luck at getting back into your home right away!
