Need help with this location

DT.IN.LB.BAJA - 11-24-2010 at 01:00 PM

Found what appears to be an abandoned Hospital in the hills north Of Santiago, the coordinates are 23.571889,-109.771716
The place is big and has what looks like a residence farther up the hill. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Jack Swords - 11-24-2010 at 01:10 PM

What you found is probably the old abandoned hospital for tuberculosis patients back when they were isolated from civilization. Were you able to gain access?

DT.IN.LB.BAJA - 11-24-2010 at 01:12 PM

Yes, we had full access, no gates or signs to keep us out. Can you tell me more about the place and the building that looks like a residence?

jahImpala3 - 11-24-2010 at 02:02 PM

Any pictures?

Jack Swords - 11-24-2010 at 03:03 PM

I have seen it from a distance and have a friend that filled me in. I have talked to several other locals that verified the information. We're headed down in a week and I'll try to fill in the blanks as to ownership and historical dates.

Any information would be much appreciated, Thank you!!!

Did you take any photos of it to compare to the satellite views?

DT.IN.LB.BAJA - 12-2-2010 at 10:46 AM

Yes and I also looked it up on Google Earth and the pictures posted are the same place

Driving north on Hwy 1 coming returning to Los Barriles from the airport, we were able to spot the building from the road right at the foothills. Amazing how many things we drive by in our life and don't realize they are there..

BajaBruno - 12-8-2010 at 11:18 AM

Here is a reference to a tuberculosis hospital, never finished it reads, near Santiago in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna. I don't see a construction date for it.

Hiked in today, abandoned TB hospital, never used, never completed, over 50 years ago. Difficult access, but quite impressive. In a couple of weeks going to try spending the night looking for better photos and Chupracabras.

Old TB Hospital

Jack Swords - 12-23-2010 at 07:01 PM

This is the "directoras" casa on the hillside above the hospital, again, abandoned and never used. BajaBruno's reference does mention the hospital, but at Santiago. It's the same. Neat site, can't wait to do it at night. Thanks for the very accurate coordinates.

Great site, I live in LB, and will check it out... will have lots of time on hand;D

one mo9re photo

Jack Swords - 12-24-2010 at 07:14 AM

An interior shot..

David K - 12-24-2010 at 08:28 AM

So, what happened... why didn't it go into use or if it was, why abandoned?

Jack Swords - 12-24-2010 at 01:30 PM

In talking with local folks it was politics. One administration started it, new administration came into power, stopped the support for construction. Beautiful isolated area on a huge cattle ranch could still be used.

Cardon Man - 1-18-2011 at 02:55 PM

That's amazing. Never knew it was there and certainly never saw it from the road.

Baja&Back - 1-20-2011 at 08:47 AM

Thanks for the photos, Jack. How close can you get by truck?

ccholder - 1-22-2011 at 07:52 PM

Any info would be appreciated! We have the gps info.. how are the roads?

oh boy...one's imagination runs wild thinking of how cool it would be all fixed up...a hacienda type lodging sure would be funky.

The T.B. Hospital story from the link, translated:

In the solitude of the Baja California desert, peaceful among huge rocks and vigilant cardons, right on the edge of the Sierra de La Laguna Biosphere Reserve, an imposing person who slept waiting to fulfill his function: the hospital of the "Carrizalito" a work carried out by the then governor of the Territory of Baja California Sur, General Francisco J. Múgica (1940-1946), carried out with the purpose of serving the inhabitants who had contracted tuberculosis, a contagious disease that struck 23% of the population of the peninsular territory.

However, the destination ran another address for this property, since for the year 1947 is when the antibiotic is discovered for the treatment of this infection, leaving unnecessary this great health infrastructure, which never opened its doors and was delivered to abandonment , the rust occurred between hinges, rails and gates of the time, the walls were covered in mold, wasp houses and messages from other visitors from other decades who came to admire this building.

A silent interior deadens the senses of those who walk contemplating the corridors, trying to interpret the spaces destined for healing, today spaces for the appreciation of a work that will remain as a vestige of the architectural past of our land.

Love that tree on the roof at 1:24. Wonder what the ultimate plan was to power this place? Solar wasn't an option at that point. It's pretty remote I imagine.

David K - 5-22-2018 at 07:42 PM

Like other places in Baja, a generator perhaps? 1940s may have not been very dependent on electric power.

Nuclear power, see my other post. Research facility, abandoned after nuclear accident in 1947. Very hush, hush stuff.

Yes, I saw that... I think that is as valid as any explanation!

4x4abc - 11-11-2020 at 07:56 PM

does anyone have images that are not obscured with the Photobucket banner?

David K - 11-11-2020 at 09:12 PM

Contact Jack, ask him to email you the photos or ask him to pay the minimum Photobucket charge to get rid of the watermark.

I will host them using Postimages.org if needed.

Jack Swords - 11-12-2020 at 07:09 AM

Looking for photos, but better yet, drive down there and take new ones. Local folks are friendly and many have the key to the gate. Hiking up to the Directora's house is interesting and a view of the whole place. Ominous place, thankfully not ever used (would have bad mojo). Never got to see chupracabra, but did encounter an unfriendly rattlesnake.

BajaBlanca - 11-12-2020 at 07:20 AM

Wow, how interesting! and how utterly ridiculous for the second administration not to have repurposed the building!

A lot of posters whose names I do not recognize.

I love history!
