WHAT'S THE BEST GPS?

I broke the basic man rule last week and actually asked for directions. On Maui of all places. How can you get lost on Maui? Anyway it's time to invest in a good GPS for the car. I like the one Hertz uses, but it has a Hertz label on it. I'd like a nice 'n sweet female voice to just tell me where to go, along with a readable map display with not to small a screen.

If it's like mine (a Mio), they have several languages besides English, then you have British English, and two American English choices (male or female).

Costco has good prices on Garmin and Magellan(sp?)... I vote for Garmin as there are Baja GPS maps available for it http://www.lbmaps.com

Be aware that, in most cases, when the GPS says it supports North America, it does not support Mexico. You have to be very specific. Some units allow you to buy additional maps for Mexico.

we were able to buy a chip for our garmin off the internet that covers all of baja; backroads, trails, etc.

get a smart phone. i find i don't need a gps in areas without phone coverage, because in such areas a paper map will do, as there are few roads in remote areas, the roads are usually not in gps library, and i prefer real topo maps in remote areas instead of poor quality road maps on gps units.

Carry maps, even when using a GPS. In Baja I use the Baja AAA road map for general info and the Baja Almanac for specific info.

Also carry a Garmin 60CSx for dismount and as a back up.

A GPS is a great tool, but you should know how to use it before you need to use it, and also how to read road maps, topo maps and use a compass.

Warning:
Do not leave the sticky suction cup thingy attached to your windshield at night or when the car is parked, even if the Garmin is in your hotel room. I left this mounted and it was an invitation to burglers to smash and grab whatever was in my vehicle.
