Wednesday, December 1, 2010There Will Be No Medical Emergencies In La Paz Between 10PM and 8AM

That's correct. Don't get sick or injured in La Paz at night.

The Red Cross of Baja California Sur is having a financial crisis because of a decrease in donations and mismanagement of its money. Commencing December 1, it has suspended emergency night service. These emergency services are only available from 8:00AM to 10:00PM.

La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur and the largest city on the state, with a population of approximately 200,000.

any comments about this, is this true?

tripledigitken - 12-1-2010 at 03:42 PM

Pandora's Box reference seems appropriate about now..........

I visit the site, but it's not for everyone.

desertcpl - 12-1-2010 at 03:44 PM

I really have just heard about the site,, is it usually BS

desertcpl - 12-1-2010 at 04:05 PM

thats still terrible, if you did have a major problem how would one get to the hospital,, so at night no EMT

Bajahowodd - 12-1-2010 at 04:06 PM

That makes more sense. First, there's more than one hospital in La Paz. Second, anyone walking into a hospital suffering from acute injury or life threatening condition is certainly not going to be told to go home and come back later.

Taxi?

Usually good, reliable info from Fulano. I suggest the site for information with an educated commentary.
Just don't get on Fulano's bad side if you don't want the world to know how you use your toilet paper.

wessongroup - 12-1-2010 at 04:41 PM

Perhaps someone could update on the economic conditions in BCS...

Some short time back it was posted that some government agencies were in fact behind in payments to employees..

It may be the shortages are starting to impact to some degree social services..

I don't know, I don't live in La Paz full time... it would be kind for those that live full time and pay taxes (one way or the other) to share any knowledge which that may have :):)

Reading and learning won't hurt. It's when you add a comment that you put yourself in the petri dish.
The site is a mixture of knowledge and hateful attack in the guise of defense. I quit participating because it turned into a feeding frenzy by Fulano and his sycophants.
Too bad. The place had a lot to offer to those who want to learn about Mexico, but it evolved into a witch hunt by Fulano to look into public records and other sources to expose people. Sometimes Fulano was right, but not always. That didn't matter from the victim's standpoint. The undefendable statement or implication was there and the damage was done.
Very dangerous. Fearful. Exactly what Fulano wants.

Just read....Don't write.

I read and write there. I just post what I think without too much filtering. It's a Blog, not a bulletin board- so the author is the owner and it's his sandbox. Some of us play well with others in the sandbox without engaging in mischief, while others are obsessed with creating cyber-drama using multiple personas. For sure I've had some sand thrown at me. Like Dennis says, once you post you have entered the sandbox and you can't pick who gets to be your playmate- the owner of the blog does because it's his sandbox. Fulano has given me much help when I needed it in Mexico and then came through with some solid legal tips for my Mexican family NOB when they hit a barrier. I didn't ask for the help, he just saw the need and provided it- I very much appreciate that. I don't have anything bad to say about the guy but I wasn't one of those hunted, exposed and humiliated by him either (I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that - but still posting). He has a unique perspective on Mexico based on his life experiences, we all do. He does link some interesting articles to support his point of view.

I think he is working on creating a Fulano Message Board so people can discuss his articles and point of view in a conversation format- like Nomads. Let's face it- Baja Norte is going through a very rough time with a lot of individual components. The more places we can get and share info- the better, imho. I'm glad there are people like Doug and Fulano to do it- no matter their personal viewpoint.

Smart readers should maintain a skeptics perspective when considering any source or storyline.

In this case one could ask, is this valid? Does it affect me? What is the message overall? What point is the author trying to convince the reader?

Obviously, the baseline story may have some validity or it may not, does Red Cross in Baja has limited funds? How significant is this to me? What is their financial history? how many do they serve? What happened? Is this different from last year? Why are they out of money, where is their financial accounting? Who is in charge of their finances? Who is the blogger promoting the post and what is their personal motivation? What is the authors general tone or message?

Here on BN we have a population of readers and posters who are apparently more often seniors? Seniors are a critical portion of an increasing population that must constantly improve it's ability to discern in media what is valid and what is relevant in order to make good decisions for the overall health of society.

As a reader and fellow community member who may depend on your good judgment at times, I encourage you all to become far more skeptical and dismissive of everything you read and especially those stories that rally toward fear driven messages, such as fulano in general. Be increasingly aware of yourself, how you feel when you read the story.

Pay close attention to how your actions affect you and your community and give far less weight and less credence to media doomsday stories about reduced services and deteriorating society.

Good luck

Keep in mind that the Red Cross has little to do with the operation of local hospitals, some of which also have ambulances. The Red Cross is an independent organization that provides, among other services, ambulances to local hospitals when needed.

Bajahowodd - 12-2-2010 at 03:28 PM

That's exactly why the Fulano post was so off the mark.

What mark? All he said was "Commencing December 1, it has suspended emergency night service. These emergency services are only available from 8:00AM to 10:00PM." Pretty much on the mark. He didn't say anything more, either did the article he linked. The linked article had the addition that the Red Cross will still provide the medical and nursing services 24 hours, but his Title: "There Will Be No Medical Emergencies In La Paz Between 10PM and 8AM" was pretty much on target although when he cleverly worded it as a "decree"- it threw some people off I guess.

The linked article lashes out at the mismanagement of the Red Cross funds collected- which considering how much we all donate for those red stickers ever year should be the talking point. Why the new line up of ambulances with no money left over to run them? :?:

Sr. Woooosh- Totally understand, based on a prior post of yours, that you would move to defend Fulano, whoever that is. My reference was to the initial post on this thread, where the Fulano post was excerpted. I have no dog in any fight with Fulano.

Me either, what fight? It's all peace, love and fish tacos here. The last time I didn't defend a blogger I got creamed. :)

The Fulano post is very clear about talking only about the Cruz Roja. I believe for a lot of us, as tourists, traveling on Mex 1 your savior in most cases is CR, not other commercial ambulances.

If you have the stomach for it, as much of the links are about Narco violence. Fulano's blog has information that most non-spanish fluent readers don't have access to. As DENNIS said, the editorial content can get pretty rough though.

As with most topics it takes more than one source to glean the truth.

Both Salvatierra and Military Hospitals have recently moved. Both offered the best emergency treatment in La Paz, in my experience.

Salvatierra is now south of the Soriana Mall on the same street as the Ayuntamiento and the new fire department, at the far end of the former location of the original air strip in La Paz. The emergency room at Salvatierra is the 'go to' place for serious problems like strokes, heart attacks. Salvatierra is said to have available the injection that prevents brain damage in the event of strokes.

We personally benefited from having the old Military emergency room close to us when it was a couple of blocks up from the north end of the Malecon. Not sure where it is now, maybe at the military base on Forjadores across from the Technological University? Also not sure of what their policy is now re: treating civilian 'drop-in' patients but it used to be wide open and first rate.

The hospital at Fidei Paz is also very good for emergency (or other) treatment and it is located at approximately Km 5 on the Carreterra Norte out of La Paz.

Haven't seen any Red Cross people soliciting on the street corners lately but will have to remember to be a little more generous this year when they appear. It's a terrific service -- free ambulance rides that would probably cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars in the 'States.

Anybody know what that is called? It would be good for us to know who has it in Ensenada.

Probably recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA).

A family member just had an ischemic stroke in the past few months, and was administered this within a short time after her stroke. They called it the "clot buster". While it ended up working out extremely well for her in this case, we were advised prior that the studies on it showed the risk that a certain small % of people would have a bad (or inverse?) reaction to it, and it would make them worse or kill them.
