Caravan in March 2011 to San Ignacio and Concepcion??

Brian L - 12-1-2010 at 07:24 PM

Coming from San Diego, I want to go down in the spring with our travel trailer. With the wife and two kids, 3 and 4. We've done a lot of baja camping in the past, before kids, but never south of San Quintin or San Felipe, and only in a tent.

Dates are fairly open since kids aren't in school yet. Looking at 5-7 days. Mid February to late March (let's talk dates)...

I'd love to go to Coyote Bay in Concepcion, but that's a two day trip, so maybe Bahia LA is okay. Concepcion would be our next trip!

The wife is still leary of pulling our trailer down with our SUV. We've only taken it to the beaches around San Diego and LA. If we had some fellow Nomad's caravaning, she would feel more secure.

Any takers?

Anyone going down in February or March? Looking for a caravan partner, but also wouldn't mind camping near ya if you want...

We just upgraded our towing vehicle to a 2008 Tundra. So no longer worried about pulling power...

So, I'm now thinking of going to see whales in San Ignacio in late March. Stop near San Quintin on way down, then to San Ignacio to camp a couple of nights. See the whales one day, then head to Concepcion for a couple of nights. Head back to San Diego with a stop at Catavina for a night.

7 nights total...

I will be crossing at Tecate 14Mar and driving straight to Catavina for the night. Next day to Mulege which is my destination for the next month. Can't say enough about the whales at Bahia de San Ignacio, absolutely worth the 45 min goat trail drive. The whales will put you in your place, species-wise. The Tundras are nice rigs, make sure your tires are up to snuff. I run only class E tires on my 3/4 ton.

Brian. My two cents is that you'd likely have a better whale experience mid-March and earlier.

Ensenada to El Rosario on March 14th, then to Guerrero Negro on the 15th. Meeting up with Nomad Shari for a guided whale watching trip on the 16th and 17th.

I have heard that late March is still good in Ignacio. Males are gone, leaving moms and calves. Whales are only a part of the trip, Concepcion final destination. Even if no whales, should be great trip.

We're leaving Jan. 30, from the San Diego area through Tecate and haven't found anyone to caravan at least part way as we head to Loreto.

There is a nice place called Playa Saldamando a few miles from Salsipuedes and Ensenada...Not sure how big your rig is but its a good place to stay and its secure...its owned by a former chief of the SDPD....
