New airport and tourist activities in Creel planned

wilderone - 12-3-2010 at 08:56 AM

Sounds like fun (but will really change this area):

Copper Canyon Airport
3 December

"The federal and Chihuahua state government have approved funds for the construction of a small airport near Creel, traditional gateway to the Copper Canyon . The canyon, four times larger than the Grand Canyon in Arizona, currently is reached by the only passenger rail service in the country. The airport, with a mile-long runway, will be large enough only for small jets. With a new aerial tramway already in operation (it will be extended), zip lines, bike and hiking trails, the canon area is expected to attract more than half-a-million visitors annually."

Put in in San Felipe,we need it!!

San Felipe? A aerial tram from Picacho Del Diablo? I think you need a greater narcotrafficker base to get an airport built.

Copper Canyon is no Grand Canyon!!!

Tho it is huge and spectacular, much of it's attraction is it's wildness, and the Tarahumara people who live there. Keep on developing it and I am skeptical that it will be the attraction that they think it will be.

Just my opinion, tho.

Could you kindly provide a media source for this info, either in English or Spanish?

Many thanks,

interesting .... I think Creel will be able to handle it. and more people will be able to experience the beauty of 11 canyons as well as support the local economy. As far as I understand, no one will be able to infringe on the reservation land, so the Tarahumara should be able to retain their essence as they have done for hundreds of years ...

Airport for jets? The narcos need it, for sure...The truck traffic isn't adequate for the marijuana and poppy exports from the canyons these days...:?:

a mile at that altitude is not long enough for jets even small ones.
Creel is a very dangerous airport right now.

Ahhhh, maybe, but in mexico 5,000 ft will work .

I fly in and out of Guachochi , East of Creel and it is 8,000 feet , --4000 ft runway . I had to leave one day fully grossed , density altitude 14,000 ft. and I was able to clear 50' at the end of the runway , had to turn for the trees-- I've seen some "bigger " planes and as Lencho says , the newer comuters have plenty of power!
