Motorcycle Trip on Turkey Day

bajadogs - 12-5-2010 at 08:52 PM

Solo from San Diego to Bahia de Los Angeles then with a buddy south to Punta San Fran. My 2008 KLR685 was flawless. My buddy has the same exact bike, with the 685 Schnitz. He had problems with the K&N filter clogging every 40 miles or so. I have the K&N too but it never clogged. He also leaked radiator fluid in the middle of nowhere but we made it home. I can't imagine doing that trip on any other bike. It was quite an adventure and I missed many Kodak moments, especially the long ride in the dark back to Bahia de Los Angeles in the moonless night (picking up stranded farmer hitch-hikers and surreal rolled over big rigs). I hope you enjoy this... -

That was absolutely fantastic!!! Bravo!!! I particularly liked the footage from San Francisquito, especially blasting down the runway. Great job!!!

bajadogs - 12-5-2010 at 09:16 PM

Thanks Ken! It was the first chance to open up the throttle after many tough hours and man it felt good!

El Camote - 12-5-2010 at 09:18 PM

Enjoyed it too, dogs. Thanks for posting!

P.S. What's a schnitz? :o

tripledigitken - 12-5-2010 at 09:22 PM

It's an aftermarket racing piston. The 2008 KLR650 was notorious for burning oil because of faulty rings. The Schnitz piston makes the bike smoother and more powerful and eliminates the oil problem. That's how I got this bike btw after the previous owner blew the head by never checking the oil.

That's half way between San Raf and San Fran, climbing up the ridge heading south. It's beautiful country and I wish I had more time to explore. Next time. Time is priceless...

Great ride.....did a similar route a while ago on my DR650, with 2 buddy's (KLR650 and a 650 Dakar). Great stuff....that side video camera locations is kind of cool...In how many days did you do this in..??

TMW - 12-6-2010 at 10:33 AM

Thanks for the video ride. Makes me want to leave for Baja now.

motoged - 12-6-2010 at 10:39 AM

Yeah....that's what I thought...just before the switchback that leads up to the alto plano....and the smoother sand roads heading south....wick it up :biggrin::biggrin:

8 days total. 1 day to get to Bahia de Los Angeles, 1 day looping down to Punta San Fran, Los Arcos, GN, and back to Bahia LA. 1 day riding back to San Diego. So 3 days of hard riding, the other days were spent goofing off and relaxing around the bay. I prefer the side camera too. When it's on my helmet it attracts a lot of attention like a teletubby.

BAJACAT - 12-7-2010 at 09:49 PM

hey Dogs , cool vid, man..I like the part when they check you in the Army check point..I wounder what they where looking for in your small bag... it's not like you can carry alot illegal items in there..

motoged - 12-8-2010 at 01:01 AM

Bajacat,
A guy could stash several Glocks and a 1/4 pound in a tank bag that size easy:lol::lol:

Wow - that's was great! I especially liked the part with the music, where the camera was overhead, zipping across the sandy roads.

BajaBlanca - 12-10-2010 at 09:13 AM

BajaGeoff - 12-10-2010 at 01:38 PM

Really nice video bajadogs! I loved the different perspectives you were able to get with the camera mounts.

salttram - 12-20-2010 at 10:15 PM

Really nice video that captures the true vibe of a Baja bike trip! Was there gas available in San Francisquito?

willyAirstream - 12-20-2010 at 11:07 PM

SUPER ViD!!!

I think you probably could find gas there but would not bet the farm on it. Our KLR650s made it all the way from BLA to San Francisquito and on to GN before a fill up. Be prepared and have a great trip.

This is a very inspiring trip report. I must do this at some time in my life. How did the solo part of the trip feel to you? Sometimes I feel less lonely when I have a traveling companion, but the travels that really, really stick out in my memory are the ones where I was alone. It's almost surreal sometimes to travel so many miles away from anyone.

Pack,
I thoroughly enjoyed the solitude, even riding in the pitch black nights. There is a surreal effect when you push yourself away from your comfort zone. My best memories were far from any comfort zone. Life is short huh?
