Loreto changes

tehag - 12-6-2010 at 02:17 PM

Driving up the main drag of Loreto this morning, I looked out and realized something was radically different. There, where for 19 years a charismatic lady had served tacos to an adoring throng of tourists and locals alike, was nothing but cracked concrete and some demolition rubble. I had to keep going but resolved to check it out later on my way back. Sure enough, McLulu's was gone, flattened. I was very uneasy about just why this landmark attraction had vanished. I got out my pocket camera and took this image of what was left.

While I was snapping a couple of shots someone hailed me from across the street. I turned and was most relieved to see our dear friend alive and well in the doorway of her new location. Whew. I don't think Loreto is ready to go on without Maria and her popular taco shop. I know I'm not.

bajacalifornian - 12-6-2010 at 06:36 PM

I didn't make it to town today. Saved an extra heart beat for me.

tripledigitken - 12-6-2010 at 06:47 PM

Tehag,

Thanks for the heads up. It will be my first restaurant stop in Loreto next visit!!!

Funny. We were talking to Lulu about her stand last week. The shop she's moved into has been basically closed for some time.

BTW, she has always told us her name is Lourdes, but she prefers Lulu...so that's what we use...

Hola tehag,

as i don't spend too much time in loreto, basically, just pass through on my way to either los barriles or los angeles while staying overnite at hotel angra, what do you call the main drag in loreto ?

it would be a very good change for me rather than eating at delmonico's ( ? ) the old el nido each time.

i thank you in advance,

DA RAT

Rat, it's on Hidalgo, just east of the Pescador market.

Delmonico's heh:?: Likely you're referring to Domingo's :?::?:

Wouldn't mind a Delmonico's in Loreto.
Spend a few hours there in the 60's.:saint::saint:

BajaBlanca - 12-6-2010 at 08:56 PM

there is such a nice restaurant on the beach owned by an american couple with pics of their world travels on the wall .... great food there but i don't remember the name of it.

LaTijereta - 12-6-2010 at 09:26 PM

Lulu's 20th Anniversary party at the old place a few years back..

Many "tacos y limes" over the years:cool:

Paula - 12-6-2010 at 09:58 PM

That is a nice picture, Tijereta.

Don Pepe's was owned by Lulu's son. A great move for Lourdes, as it is a much better building than her old stand.

Mulegena - 12-7-2010 at 03:19 AM

ooh... I'm gonna miss that old place.
Food won't taste quite the same, but I betcha we'll get used to it.

Lulu's is a "Must Do" when you're in Loreto for excellent tacos of unusual variety.

Skeet/Loreto - 12-7-2010 at 08:02 AM

Question: Anybody know who the Guy in the White T Shirt is besides La Tijereta??.

If no one knows I will give you a Story about this Old Friend.

I introduced my children to their first fish tacos at her stand nearly 20 yrs ago and to this day they still insist we stop there every time we pass through.

watizname - 12-7-2010 at 10:32 AM

Geeze, my mouth just started watering. Think they deliver long distance?

That's Fred, Skeet. So will you tell us the story?

Skeet/Loreto - 12-7-2010 at 04:56 PM

Fred Shields- Owner and operator of "California Pools" out of Long Beach Calif.
Fred and patty had Don O'neil buid them the 2nd American Type Home in Loreto. He still lives there.
When I first came to Loreto there was only 5 Americanos then about 1970 or so Fred and patty showed up. He Tio Don and I would take trips to Catalana island, take a Goat with us and camp on the Island and catch oo many Lobsters we could not eat them all. Fishing was Fantastic. and Fred was a hellav Fisherman.
We all Hung out in his Friends Motor Home the Day Hurricane Liza hit.
As life goes Fred and Patty Split and Doc Timmons Wife and Fred Married.

During that time it was Jack Kimbrough, Jack Foster, Ben Benner, Myself, Don O"neil then later came along Jamie and Marie Parker and then Von.

We had some great Parties and Fred Shields is one of the Best.

True, but tricky to get to, off Salvatierra. A map might help.

rebob - 12-7-2010 at 06:19 PM

Actually, I believe the new shop is on Salvetierra, just across the road from the old shop.

Ceiling is higher too, so it should be easier for those taller folks...

kiterkip - 12-7-2010 at 07:04 PM

OK, You've all just added another "Must Do" to my drive south in Jan. Thank You BajaNomad. Always on the prowl for the right fish taco.
"newbie"

Not to be nit-picky, but it is on Hidalgo.

At the corner of Independecia, Salvatierra runs straight east. It is the street that the tourist shops and the mision are on. Also running east from Independencia is Hidalgo, which curves just a little to the south. Hotels Junipero and Plaza Loreto are on Hidalgo, not Savatierra. The new McLulu's is in the old Don Pepe's, right across the street from her old place. Although the new place is a bit less picturesque, I'd sure rather run a restaurant out of a real building, myself:D

Jezzz.. Skeeter at least spell my Dad's name right "Vagn"..
He had a great life down in Loreto..

Also...
Fred is doing good these days.. Just had a hip replacement this year..Hoping to be down to his house in the Spring..

Skeet/Loreto - 12-8-2010 at 08:46 AM

Vagn: Well I am sure you are right about the spelling.
Your Dad was a "Character" and one of those guys that "You could ride the River With".

Sure miss the "Old Loreto;"

I visited Lulu's recently, undercover with some pensioners, I sat quietly while my friends shopped and I waited for them to eat tacos together, I noticed that she charges people vastly different prices depending I guess on what she thinks you can pay, with the average prices then at about 17 pesos per fish taco, 20 for pensioners or 2 dollars each, 10 pesos for friends. The condiments looked quite scary covered in herds of flies and the fish soggy, heavily battered and deep fried too. Considering all the options for fresh healthy fish tacos in Baja I personally would skip this option.

David K - 12-8-2010 at 10:12 AM

Let's see your photos gnu... I took some (above) in the middle of summer and flies were not an issue... prices were fair... we would go back.

Skeet/Loreto - 12-8-2010 at 04:07 PM

Just for the record if you want a Good hamburger at Night, go to the Plaza and right across the Street will be a small Taco Stand. The Young man runing it is somewhat diabled but he and his Mother have been putting out hamburgers there for many years only at night.

Paula, you're correct, of course. Sorry for the confusion.

As one is driving down Salvatierra, Hildago is the logical, drivable option at Independencia...

More on Lulu's........

CasaManzana - 12-9-2010 at 03:50 PM

All this talk about Lulu"s got me to digging in the shoe box for some old pix when we were sailing around Mexican waters. We'd anchor off the malecon and row the dindy ashore just for a "Lulu Hit" as we called it. Photo of 1997

This pix is of 1983, white shoes and all, when she was on the south side of the street. What a piece of history she is-

You would, wouldn't you? Nothing personal but you always have to pitch a b-tch about something or rain on someones parade. Go eat at McDonalds.

I know that guy
