5th Annual BajaNomad Dia de Reyes Toy Drive

 Pages:  1    3

fdt - 12-6-2010 at 05:17 PM

Once again it's time for the Annual BajaNomad Dia de Reyes Toy Drive, on it's 5th year now and all thanks to the generous support of so many of you.

Please forgive the late announcement, but as most of you are aware I have been involved with the Corona Plaza Hotels, both in Tijuana and Rosarito, but we still have enough time to do this. Because of the time factor and in talking to Mr. Baja Nomad (Doug) we have decided to have this event on January 16th, Sunday, and it will be in either Tijuana or Rosarito, depending on the amount of transportation that I can get for the children involved. As in previous years, Mexicoach has agreed to transport all the toys on the tour bus so we just need to see how many kids and from what areas they will be needing transportation.

We have 2 drop off locations for gifts this year, the good people from Jackson Hewitt again have agreed to allow us to receive gifts at their Chula Vista location.

Miss Nidia Puerto is our main contact person.
JACKSON HEWITT
1655 Broadway,
Suite 10
Chula Vista, CA 91911
Phone number (619) 426-6516

The second location is with our friends at BajaBound Insurance

Toy Drive c/o Baja Bound Insurance Services, Inc.
750 11th Avenue #101
San Diego, CA 92101
Phone (619) 702-4292

As for the kids, we have over 300 of them ranging in ages from 3 to 15 so we need at least that number of new toys to give away and as always they will have the traditional Rosca de Reyes, tamales, frijolitos and hot chocolate.

I will have more details soon and if there are any questions, my email is fernando@ultimatebaja.com or you can always U2U me.

Gracias,
Fernando Garcia y familia

Thank you very much Ken Cooke for producing this wonderful video about the 2009 Baja Nomad Dia de Reyes Toy Drive.

sd - 12-6-2010 at 06:13 PM

This has been an incredible event for me. I attended 2 years ago by myself, and last year brought my daughter. This year I hope to bring some additonal people.

I have been very impressed with the generosity of all of you who have contributed, as well as all the work Fernando and his family do to make this event take place - THANK YOU!

I have met several great Nomad's, and being there in person to see and feel the kids appreciation is a special treat for me. I have found it to be a safe event, so if you are considering joining us you will have a great time.

This year has been difficult for most of us financially, but please do support the kids if you are able to do so.

Happy Holidays!

Scot

BajaBlanca - 12-9-2010 at 09:39 AM

that was such a wonderful video !! Baja Cat is always giving !! It is a good idea to buy toys after the holidays too - amazing sales make it more viable. I didn't realize it but perhaps more gifts are given on dia de reyes than at xmas itself here in Mexico?

That was exactly why we decided (Doug and myself back in 2006) to have a Dia de Reyes toy drive, so people could take advantege noty only of the after xmas sales but also could have an opportunity to donate toys or gifts that were received during xmas but not necesarily what was desired by the recepient.
Yes, Dia de Reyes is the time when children in México receive presents.

fdt - 12-9-2010 at 02:08 PM

Thank you so much, I know it will be a very successful toy drive as it has been for the last four years.

Bajafun777 - 12-9-2010 at 09:53 PM

fdt, I started to worry about what had happened to you since I had not seen any posting here for a while from you. I will get toys to one of the drop offs but since I am officially retired now thinking of actually going down this time. Besides toys do you take cookies, candy, etc. down to give to kids while they are waiting to get a chance at receiving a toy? Just asking as I was going to ask people at our church if they would like to bake and put cookies in zip lock sandwich bags to hand out also. If so how many would be needed if I can get them to do this?? Will also see about doing the same with candies, if possible for those that do not bake or do not like ovens as they might attack them if ever used in their house,LOL.

Could you also say what other drop offs there are in Chula Vista and National City or other places. Take care my friend and I wish you along with your family safe travels, good health and yes good financial times in this coming year. Later-- bajafun777 "No Hurry,No Worry, Just FUN"

fdt - 12-9-2010 at 11:09 PM

We need many, many toys and as for food items, in the past and keeping with tradition, we always have hot tamales, frijolitos and hot chocolate served for all the children and adults attending the toy drive and of course the Rosca de Reyes, this we have made and the Rosca we either buy or get donated.

Bajafun777 - 12-10-2010 at 12:22 AM

Ok fdt, about how much does the Rosca bread cost to serve everybody at the presentation of the gifts to the kids? bajafun777 "No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN"

I will find out today and also post the Chula Vista drop off location info.

fdt - 12-10-2010 at 12:42 PM

By the number of children we will have and the price for Roscas from last years they will run about $200 pesos per rosca, so 5 roscas shoud be suficient $1,000 pesos = 83 dollars at a rate of 12 to 1.

Bajafun777 - 12-13-2010 at 08:12 PM

fdt, will be in Chula Vista tomorrow so will drop off some gifts at the place on Broadway. I would also like to send you $40 dollars to help pay for the Roscas. Please give me a mailing address so I can mail this money to you. Take Care & Travel Safe bajafun777 "No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN"

Bajafun777 - 12-15-2010 at 01:30 AM

Fernando, very nice people at the Jackson Hewitt where I dropped off the toys and left a little help for the Roscas. Will really try to make it on Jan.16th if I do not have any other family things pop-up. Again, nice place for toys to be left with the warm reception you receive. Ken,

So great that you will be there to film the event once again. Your work is fantastic! My daughter Sara will be joining us for her second trip, and I will make my 3rd trip. We are inviting some others that hopefully will join us.

Baja Nomad's - I will match the next $100 in donations. I have seen how much effort is made to put this together, and would encourage any participation that you are able to do.

Scot

Ken Cooke - 12-18-2010 at 10:52 AM

Scot - Thank you for the nice words! Last January, my wife had only been in the USA for about 1 1/2 months, and I didn't want to leave her at home where she knew nobody at the time. Now, with her travel documents in place, I am looking forward to bring her (to also help with the Toy effort) and my trusty Handicam.

sd - 12-18-2010 at 10:59 AM

Ken,

It will be nice to meet Leidys, looking forward to it!

I had just showed her the video, and since portions of it are in Spanish (and because she met CG's wife Miriam), she is 100% up for the task! :bounce: This will be a great event, and I'm looking forward to our participation in it.

Leidys and I in Ensenada - July 2010

Bajafun777 - 12-18-2010 at 02:27 PM

Ken, my wife and I are also planning to go to this event also and look forward to letting the wives meet and talk. Yes, my wife speaks spanish, which is great because mine is lacking in some area,LOL>

Fernando your work is great on this event and Ken's video really adds that personal touch to it. Again, I encourage all nomads on this site to try and donate if possible. fdt - 12-18-2010 at 07:20 PM

Wow Ken, it would be great if you can make the next video as I am always kind of busy with all the rest of the organization. Were do you need the ride from?

We will be anywhere in the San Diego area - driving south from Riverside.

Ken Cooke - 12-21-2010 at 07:53 AM

Fernando,

What section of Tijuana will this years' Dia de los Reyes event take place?

fdt - 12-21-2010 at 10:43 AM

The plan at this time is to have the toy giveaway at the Corona Plaza Hotel wich is right by were the downtown bullring used to be.

BajaGeoff - 12-21-2010 at 11:17 AM

FDT and Ken....

I will also be bringing down my video camera and will plan on putting together a video of the event.

Looking forward to it!

fdt - 12-21-2010 at 06:25 PM

Thanks to you both in advance. This event gets better and better every year!

Bajafun777 - 12-22-2010 at 12:49 AM

Ken, once I know for sure we are going it is no problem giving you and your wife a ride. Should know for sure by the 8th as my wife has some doctor visits for treatment to her arm, as she had surgery for a fall but once we know the treatment days all is good then for plans. I have a fast trac pass to get back across after the event makes for crossing back into the States so much easier.LOL Take Care and Travel Safe bajafun777 "No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN"

Just so you know, all my presents are with Baja Geoff at Baja Bound Mexican Insurance Services in San Diego. I was great to meet the entire Baja bound staff. Baja Geoff even made me a strong cup of black coffee for my drive back home in one of these two cup stovetop espresso coffee makers. It was delicious. I'm going to have to buy one as I love strong coffee.

Hi Fernando!

My daughter Sara and I, and maybe 2 or 3 others would like to join you this year. Are we meeting at the Tijuana bus station again?
We will arrange to get you a minimum of ten gifts prior to the event. Are there any gifts that you are specifically requesting, or should we just get what you listed previously?

All Baja Nomads - I have seen the efforts that go into putting this event on, and reach out to each of you if you can contribute a gift or money toward a gift.

THANK YOU!

Another big delivery at the Baja Bound office! Sorry I missed you Don Jorge....was running errands when you came by. The office is starting to look like a toy store...kids are going to be very happy!

Ford - 1-6-2011 at 10:22 PM

3 Good sized boxes headed to Chula Vista! Will be there monday from Ontrac! My dog actually ate one of the gifts! I really let him have it...I told him that one kid in Mexico will now be without a gift for Christmas because you ate it!
A lot of the gifts this year are being donated by my kids. They realize they get way to much and have decided its better to give stuff to kids that dont get anything! I hope one of these years we can make the trip with you guys! It would be great for my kids to see, and good spanish practice. 2 of them are in spanish immersion school and one will start in 2 years!
Hope we can meet the goal!
If the person in sac cant get someone to drive down I bet I can get my brother to donate the shipping as he does for me! Thanks Scott and Steph!!

Just getting in on the tail end of this.. Can I still send in a check to the Baja Bound Ins address on the first page of this thread? Or is there a better way to expedite it?

BajaGeoff - 1-7-2011 at 10:52 AM

Hello bbbait!

A gift card would probably be the easiest way to send money. Oso sent a Toys-R-Us card that will be used to buy toys before the 16th. If you do prefer to send a check, inquire with Fernando (fdt) and see who it should be made out to....

bbbait - great that you have joined in, thank you. When you can, join us on the day of the toy and bike giveaway. It is an incredible day to witness first hand, and many people with Fernando's lead work hard to make it happen.
BajaGeoff - what is the final day for you to receive gifts, money and bikes? And thank you also for making this event happen!

Thanks bbbait! Your contribution is going to go a long way for the kiddies!

Scot....I would say next Friday would be the cutoff date to get stuff at our office, but the sooner the better since we still have to transport everything down to TJ. You are very welcome....our role is pretty small compared to what Ferna is doing though!

Yeah Nomads!!!!

You know, we might want to get an elementary school class to help out on this project next year ..... I think kids would love to participate in such a wonderful event .... does anyone have grandkids going to a school that might be willing to help out ????

Thank you so much bbbait (Wayno) for your contribution, this will help a lot to pay for the food we will be serving the kids.

If someone is interested in contributing in a monetary manner, we don't have a Paypal account but we have something similar and that is a Green Dot card. How this works is that you can purchase at almost every CVS /pharmacy, RiteAid, Wallgreens, 7 Eleven or Kmart a Green Dot Money Pack for any ammount from $20 and up.

Once purchased, just scratch off at the back and you can U2U me the numbers and that will really help us to make this event succesfull.
Gracias
Fernando

Thanks,
