Trip report: Cabo to Tecate

oxxo - 12-10-2010 at 09:54 AM

Made the trek from Cabo to Tecate last Monday through Wednesday. Every thing is the same as always except for the following:

- Highway construction continues between San Lucas and Todos Santos. There is a lot of graded dirt detours but still passable for cars with trailers. Project is to be completed in Nov. 2011. We'll see!

- There is a new military stop between Todos Santos and La Paz. It is the typical drill.

- There was a Federale stop just south of La Paz, in the southbound lanes. They were stopping all vehicles. I presume this is a temporary thing.

- Went down the center lanes in Cd. Constitucion at the posted 40kph. Stopped at all stop signs AND non-working traffic lights. Saw a couple of police camionetas but they paid no attention to us

- Generally speaking, the roads in Baja Sur are in better repair than in Baja Norte.

- Very light traffic on Hwy 1, but about a half dozen groups of crazy European bicyclists all heading south.

- Lots of bridges being rebuilt in both north and south. Detours were short and paved.

- Bridge south of El Rosario is complete and in operation

-Looked for Los Poblanos taco stand in San Quintin but couldn't find it.

- HWY 3 south of Tecate is still torn up for about 16 miles. About 1/3 is complete and nicely paved, intermittently. We are not sorry we came this way, but if it had been raining it would become a mud bog and would recommend an alternate route.

- 30 minute wait at the border in Tecate at 4pm on Weds.

That's it. Really nothing remarkable except that for the first time in about 3 years we didn't see an accident along the way. Will return south in early January.

Was wondering about the new military checkpoint. On highway 19 or 1? And did it look extemporaneous, or like it was going to be permanent? Thanks.

The checkpoint is on 19 just north of TD. It looks permanent.

Checkpoint is just past the N. Pemex outside Todos. I got a pass going South but there was a group of MX in a van that were getting a thorough going over.

There's also a police checkpoint N. of Cabo -- where the federales use to hang. Got carded there last week. Happened to a friend too, separately.

Interesting in that I've seen the police hanging out a couple of times, but it looked more like they had just made a donut run. Never saw anyone being checked.
