WTHeck is the explanation for this phenomenon?

during the last santa ana we were sitting on the patio looking at the sun go down. as soon as it splashed down, and was gone, there was this sight. it lasted for at least 5 minutes. you can CLEARLY see the horizon above the "reflection?" of the sun that had already set below the horizon....:?:

no clouds. santa ana's result in clear skies where all the muck in the lower atmosphere gets blown out to sea by the offshore breezes. the ocean was reflecting a sun that had set.......if you can believe it.

I'll bite. I think you have it right. But how is the light getting there? Perhaps it is bending over the horizon (refracting) as it comes from the sun, then reflects off the ocean. The atmosphere does this with sunlight all the time, but the additional muck might enhance the effect. Cool.

I've seen that before. It was on tv when I was just a kid. It was what happened right before Ultraman kicked the butt of whatever it was that made such a phenomenon in the sea.

It is reflection of the setting sun off ice crystals and or dust in the upper atmosphere. Happen a lot after a major volcanic eruption but can happen other times also.
