going to Phoenix?

Next month I'll be taking off a few days and heading up from La paz to Phoenix. Which is better- to go on up through TJ and catch the 8 there or up throught Tecate and cross the border there to get to 8 north of Tecate?? Thanks for the advice-- Norm

tecate worked for me the one and only time i drove.
but i hear there are construction issues.

I-8 to jacumba is a breeze. Jacumba to tecate easy 2 lane too.

if/when the construction is finished, Tecate is by far the better way to get to and from Phoenix. easy, good road, avoids TJ border.

Can I help...?

Capt. Mike, he is coming north from La Paz to your town, so a reverse order of your directions.

mcfez, Hwy. 3 doesn't go to Mexicali... Hwy. 2 is I think what you meant?

Until the Hwy. 3 construction is finished... I would stay on Mex. 1 to Popotla, then use Corredor 2000 to El Florido and get on Hwy. 2 to Tecate and cross north there.

Take 98 to Jacumba or Buckman Springs and join I-8 there.

Don't be in a hurry, just enjoy the drive!

Looking at the map....I see the issue.

..... would stay on Mex. 1 to Popotla, then use Corredor 2000 to El Florido

Stay dry? Our horses are swimming in our Berry fields. The chickens are trying to kick in our back door to get warm. The five dogs found their way to the living room sofa...next to the wood burner! I'm outside splitting wood. "........wishing I was in Baja"!!!

DON'T take 3 to 5 to Mexicali as recommended earlier, way out of the way.
At worst case go back roads to San Felipe via Bahia Gonzaga(sp), if you have a 4 wheel drive, then you can go Mexicali east gate. Los Algodones or San Luis

Be careful after crossing the border, Phoenix is currently the kidnapping capital of the world.

Also if you want the short cuts to Phoenix once you cross the border, u2u me and I will show you a few around Gila Bend and Maricopa, depending on where you are going in Phx

Yes Deno... lots of photos... taken on our return from Las Pintas, posted on Sept. 21, I think... stand by and I will add them here...


HERE you go:

We took the free road north for Ensenada, and as before, it was in great shape and very little traffic. At Popotla, we hopped onto the Corredor 2000 for 18 miles to the free Tecate highway (Mex. 2) which is 4 lanes wide all the way... only a couple of traffic lights until Tecate, as well. Popotla to the Tecate Border was 38 miles.



Mexican Independence day was Sept. 16, and many flags were flying, including this nice display at the Pemex station in El Florido.

The Toyota Tacoma Factory is passed along Highway 2... this is where my truck was made! 'Built in Baja for the Baja!'





No place to pull over, so a bit blurred!

Here are some of the signs as you drive through Tecate showing you the way to the U.S. border:







We were in line for 20 minutes, around 6:30 pm Sunday... easy!

yeah, i got that. my point was its the same road regardless of which way you go.

i am just glad i don't have to drive it. :spingrin:

but i m ight want to one day, who knows. hope it is on a moto. if i do.

Capitolkat, ever considered the ferry from Santa Rosalia to Guaymas ?
Saves a lot of driving and a lot less border hassle.

made the ensenada - phoenix (chandler) run many times via Blvd 2000/ tecate freee road to border/ 94 to buckman springs/ 8 to casa grande and 10 to chandler. about 8 hours total including short wait tecate.

Thanks everybody-- we'll be in Phoenix for our 5th turn at the PF Chang Rock N Roll Marathon-- Family and friends come for the race for charity- not much of a runner but have finished every year. Thanks for the advice
