warnings on cigarette packs

Russ - 12-23-2010 at 10:28 AM

Not only has the price of cigarettes gone way up but the warning panels should be enough to make me stop.

DENNIS - 12-23-2010 at 12:15 PM

Nobody reads what they don't want to see. The government and the Cig companys know this.

Packoderm - 12-23-2010 at 12:34 PM

It might prevent lawsuits. "I'd hereby file suit against Philip Morris because their evil cigarettes gave me bad breath which negatively affected my sex life."

bajatravelergeorge - 12-23-2010 at 12:35 PM

Your right, no one who smokes, cares. The warnings and pictures are P.R. stunts by gov. and manufacturers to make people who don't smoke think that they are doing something to stop tobacco smoking.

sanquintinsince73 - 12-23-2010 at 12:35 PM

In SQ this past weekend I noticed the writting on my Marlboro Light boxes but I figured it was some sort of contest...and I read spanish. Never occured to me to read this.

Price?

Bajahowodd - 12-23-2010 at 01:50 PM

What did the latest pack cost you?

How about this? Considering that an additional tax was added earlier this year, in New York City, a pack of cigarettes costs on average, $11!

Can I bum one?

DENNIS - 12-23-2010 at 02:01 PM

I've often wondered how many people move to Baja for cheap cigarettes and bars that tolerate smokers.

dtutko1 - 12-23-2010 at 03:21 PM

The cost of cigarettes is the #1 reason people quit. Not health warnings.

monoloco - 12-23-2010 at 03:35 PM

Folks would be better off if they took those warnings seriously.

And IF they Don't ......... WHO Cares ?

MrBillM - 12-23-2010 at 03:49 PM

There are more than enough warnings regarding EVERYTHING that "might" affect your Health. Doesn't stop the Social-Engineering people, though, from wanting to control our lives down to the Salt, Sugar and all else.

Those who make the "Choices" should bear the responsibility for their actions ALONE.

All of this ADDICTION Crap is Just That. When I decided to quit, I quit. Period. In the 43 years since, I've smoked less than a dozen cigarettes and never felt the urge to go back.

NOW, Cigars are a different story. Still savor one of those once in awhile.

Once a month or so.

I still buy Cigarettes, though, to hand out to the Campo Workers. They know they can always count on me for a pack of Marlboros which are now expensive even in San Felipe. I tried switching to "Boots", but it disappointed the workers so it's back to the Marlboros.

That would be the majority of those...

Who smoke and drink.

monoloco - 12-23-2010 at 04:14 PM

"Those who make the "Choices" should bear the responsibility for their actions ALONE." I totally agree, except in our society people with healthy lifestyles pay for the unhealthy choices of others in the form of higher insurance premiums and health care costs.

I've often wondered how many people move here because they can't get a driver's license in the states because they had too many DUI's.

THAT is Odd.

Barry A. - 12-23-2010 at 05:44 PM

I am with Mr. Bill on this one------------12 years ago I suddenly decided to quit smoking after 45 years-----once you make that decision it is easy (for me, anyway). Went from a pack a day, to none, in one day. Never looked back---never had another one. It is the "decision" that makes the difference. After I quit my nose ran badly for 3 weeks, and I felt like I had a cold, but that was it--------3 weeks max. of discomfort, then nothing.

I quit because I was coughing too much, and it made me nervous. I don't cough anymore, so must have been the right decision. :light:

mcfez - 12-23-2010 at 06:15 PM

33 years of smoking.
Took me 8 long years to quit.

Started when I was 12. Hardly a "choice" being a child under peer pressure and the "cool" Cowboy ads on Tv.

Choices are made by adults, not children.

Pescador - 12-23-2010 at 07:20 PM

Ok, here is a good question for the "Social Engineers" that think the government should regulate this kind of thing. When the big push happened and smokers quit in droves, what happened to all of the money that they said we would save if we did not have to treat all those people dying from lung cancer?

krafty - 12-23-2010 at 07:38 PM

Save and find a cure-THAT will never happen, for any cancer. Think of all of those oncologists out of work.

8 Long Years ?

That's the trouble with Liberals. They embrace their weakness rather than show some spine.

Gee, another plant we can thank the native americans for.... maybe its a trade off.. after all we got corn, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, peanuts, chocolate, vanilla, seet potatoes, canabis sativa and a number of other wonderful plants.. including coca .. plus other plants which have given us useful medications

Also nicotine was very helpful in understanding the parasympathic nervous system along with endocine functions of animal phyisology

And if we were really serious about the dangers and/or costs associated with this plant... seems like it should be outlawed ....

Boy, talk about crazy... legal killer weed..:lol:

$11 dollars a pack... guess the machines don't take quarters anymore.. shows how long since I smoked cigs....

Must confess I too ..... started having a cigar ... I'm a weak person.... still like the taste of tobacco...

I too grew up when EVERYONE smoked... Crazy Legs Hirsch, Mickey Mantle et al..

As I recall, you were considered a bit weird if you did not smoke and drinking by the 6th grade... guess I grew up with a different bunch.. in the 50's

Think not.. watch the High and the Mighty ... with John Wayne ... everyone is pounding down the hoch and the only non smokers ... think it was the kid... in the back of the plane sleeping...

Hey, Wiley....do you remember way back in the day [gawd....I hate it when people say that] when it took a quarter to buy a pack of smokes from a machine and there were two pennies change inside the cellophane wrapper?
Or, same era, matches from the machine were free? Just pull the lever and a book of fire fell from the machine into the tray.

Them's was the days.

dtutko1 - 12-24-2010 at 07:22 AM

The 5 cent candy bar, the 25 cent movie, and the 10 dollar lid. Yeah, those were the days.

bajamigo - 12-24-2010 at 08:30 AM

I thank the US Air Force for curing me of the habit: 6 cents a pack while on active duty, 50 cents a pack the day after my discharge. It was give-it-up or send the kid to NYC public school.

Pesky: I'm guessing it simply increased the salaries of the health insurer's executives and the dividend of their stock holders. But possibly went to take care of ex-smoker's diabetes and heart disease from their resulting weight gain.

Was $1.00 a carton on our ship. The "sea store" opened after we were underway. I smoked three packs of Lucky Strike & Camel a day. This was in the late 50's. Still waiting for it to bite back.

Dennis ... I sure do.. and gas it was .21-.25 cents a gallon... plus ... do you remember... GAS WARS !!!!!:lol:

Now when the last time ya saw a gas war....:lol:

Wow how cool... someone else who remembers things which are somewhat unbelievable today... L A River with no concrete... the old 102 Brewery, plus the pike !!!! (should been a national monument) ... many a day as a youngster hanging out in Long Beach.... long way on our bikes ... but worth it.. in the day...

Always wondered by my grandfather was always so quite... he was most likely in a state of shock most of the time in the 60's.. he was 70 plus .... and just couldn't understand what was happening...

Now I get !!! I'm stuck in another "century"... it's all changed again... now it's my turn in the barrel...

Interesting lyrics to a song... which I've always liked by the Kinks... "20th Century Man"

This is the age of machinery,
A mechanical nightmare,
The wonderful world of technology,
Napalm, hydrogen bombs, biological warfare,

This is the twentieth century,
But too much aggravation
It's the age of insanity,
What has become of the green pleasant fields of Jerusalem.

Ain't got no ambition, I'm just disillusioned
I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna be here.
My mama said she can't understand me
She can't see my motivation
Just give me some security,
I'm a paranoid schizoid product of the twentieth century.

You keep all your smart modern writers
Give me William Shakespeare
You keep all your smart modern painters
I'll take Rembrandt, Titian, Da Vinci and Gainsborough,

Girl we gotta get out of here
We gotta find a solution
I'm a twentieth century man but I don't want to die here.

I was born in a welfare state
Ruled by bureaucracy
Controlled by civil servants
And people dressed in grey
Got no privacy, got no liberty
Cos the twentieth century people
Took it all away from me.

Don't wanna get myself shot down
By some trigger happy policeman,
Gotta keep a hold on my sanity
I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna die here.

My mama says she can't understand me
She can't see my motivation
Ain't got no security,
I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna be here.

This is the twentieth century
But too much aggravation
This is the edge of insanity
I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna be here.

Think all ya gotta do is sub ... twenty-first century man

Smoking During Pregnancy is OK

MrBillM - 12-25-2010 at 02:38 PM

Since those who WOULD do so are obviously retarded already, their having a miscarriage would not necessarily be a negative. Why bring more defectives into the world ?

Funny, when growing up ... in the 40's and 50's we were all just ignorant of all that trans-fat, cholesterol, and all the litiney of ills one could expect from living life.. as it were ...

The old saying when someone died... Well, it was their time...

Now we know so much more... we now know, it wasn't their time.. rather they ate too much bad food, drank too much, smoked too much, live in an area with bad air quality... et al...

Now we can say, the individual died from ______________

Let's see now... does anyone get out of this alive... EVER !!!!!

Enjoy today... tomorrow may never come..

US Life Expectancy Declines (slightly)

Bajahowodd - 12-26-2010 at 01:11 PM

Data show that from 2007 to 2008, life expectancy in the US declined slightly. Not to mention that there are a number of countries around the world that have longer life expectancy than we do.

Interesting to note that despite the ever-loving plate lunch replete with spam and gravy, Hawaiians boast the highest life expectancy by state.

so, when the cancer rate doesn't decline proportional to the percentage of smokers, can we blame it on second hand smoke?
Not according to this joint report by the National Cancer Institute ; the American Cancer Society: the North American
Association of Central Cancer Registrie: the National Institute on Aging; and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); National Center for Health Services and the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. that states : "The single most important risk factor for cancer is age. Because the U.S. population is both growing and aging, the authors focused on how, even if rates of cancer remain constant, the number of people diagnosed with cancer will increase.
The authors projected the cancer burden in about 50 years from now by applying U.S. Census Bureau population projections to current cancer incidence rates. "If cancer rates follow current patterns, we anticipate a doubling from 1.3 million people in 2000 to 2.6 million people in 2050 diagnosed with cancer," said Holly L. Howe, Ph.D., executive director of NAACCR. "The number of cancer patients age 85 and over is expected to increase four-fold in this same time period,"

Hawaiian's that I have meet .... don't sweat the small stuff.. easy life style and very relaxed way of living... if you don't mind going out an killing some wild pigs.. or cliff diving .... and surfing a lot.. hanging out at the beach... hell, even Mike Tyson fit in and like them.
And for old age... yep... as we continue to extend life expectancy ... gee, we will have more medical problems.. gee, what a shocker that one is .....

Recall when growing up.... people that were in their 60's were considered old, 70.. OMG.. 80.. you got to be kidding.. 90.. unheard of.. 100... everyone stand up and give a show of respect...

Hear some say that 60 is the new 40's .....:lol: when your 60 your old .... don't let anyone kid ya... your not 40 your 60... not real good with math.. but, still know 40 ain't 60...:o

Back in the Day ?

MrBillM - 12-26-2010 at 09:38 PM

There was NEVER a day when WE didn't KNOW that Cigarettes were DANGEROUS.

Long before any person ALIVE here or anywhere on Earth existed Cigarettes were referred to as "Coffin Nails".

As far as quitting goes, EVERYONE who smokes will Quit someday.

Forever.

Bajajorge - 12-28-2010 at 10:45 AM

I've often said, what if everyone quits smoking, what will they tax to make up the difference? Where will the government get its money?
Well, my question was answered in California. Saw a news report a couple of months ago, that California welfare will no longer provide "mamograms":o to women on the welfare medical programs. This due to "the lack of tax money from tobacco".
So, keep on puffin, our quality of healthcare depends on it.;)

Living Healthy and Breaking the System

MrBillM - 12-28-2010 at 01:40 PM

Back when the Health-care Legislation debate was ongoing and claims were being made that more comprehensive early Health-Care, including early Prevention, would lower Health Costs and help to pay for the program, it was countered that earlier surveys had shown exactly the opposite.

Charles Krauthammer, a former Surgeon, noted that comprehensive early care could be justified on many counts, including moral, but Cost-Effectiveness had NEVER been one of them. The studies done while he was practicing indicated that prolonging life by early intervention in deadly disease resulted in Higher costs in later life to people who would otherwise have died and relieved pressure on the system.

So, not only do those smokers perform a service by providing important tax dollars for other uses, but their shortened-Lifecycle helps defray medical costs.

"Smoke, Smoke, Smoke that Cigarette. Puff, Puff, Puff until you Puff yourself to Death. Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate that you hate to make him wait, but you've got to have another Cigarette".
