Loreto Accommodations

motoged - 1-11-2011 at 09:06 PM

I am looking for recommendations for inexpensive (under $75) accommodations in Loreto. I will be traveling by motorcycle last half of February. I have Googled, TripAdvisored, and scanned the BN Accommodation reviews and am left still curious...

Thanks :saint:

Hotel Angra is good. Secure gated parking, large new rooms, continental breakfast, pet friendly, less than $60 a night for a double....dt

Coco Cabanas, clean with a little dip-pool, nice garden and kitchen utillities if you like to do your own.

rhintransit - 1-11-2011 at 09:58 PM

I was confused by the original post and so checked out TripAdvisor.com
no wonder motoged was asking. I'm a local and of the 17 hotels listed (one thno longer exists and a number of good hotels aren't even mentioned), I wouldn't recommend 6 of them and the prices/reviews are all over the board.

But, at $89 is over the price is seeks.

We stayed there... nice but over-priced (IMO) for the old 1950's style highway lodge motel rooms. However, if there isn't anywhere else available it is nice and quiet and a great cooled pool (in the summer).

Inns etc

Another vote for Coco Cabanas . Best value for the price (IMO). Nice and clean. Heated or chilled pool (depending on the time of year). Kitchenettes in the rooms for those so inclined to use them. And the best caretakers a person could want....not the cattle call type hotel.

güero - 1-12-2011 at 09:51 AM

Motoged, Coco Cabanos isn't charging $89 anymore. They have a weekly rate of $79 per night and you can get this rate even if you are only staying for a day or few, and with your Nomad discount you'll probably be down to your budget price. They include all the taxes in their rate. My wife and I were there over Christmas time. We stayed in cabano # 6. Heated pool and comfortable new beds. Contact Barrett at barrett@coco-cabanas.com

CC gets my vote. One of the top places in town.

BajaBlanca - 1-12-2011 at 10:48 AM

CC gets my vote too - ask for the Baja Nomad discount - it really makes it UNDER your budget :)

flyfishinPam - 1-12-2011 at 10:53 AM

how about la damiana inn? they have secured, off street parking

When we checked in at Coco Cabañas (July, 2009) I specifically asked the American man at the desk if he would consider offering a Baja Nomad rate... At the time, he was firm on the quoted price... so it is nice to see he has decided to offer Nomads one now! :light::bounce:

BIEN SALUD, DA RAT

I stayed at La Damiana Inn when I was in Loreto back in November. Nice place and pretty quiet for being in center of town. Rooms were clean and the owner is very nice and helpful. If you want a fancy place with all the bells and whistles this is not it but for a quaint spot in the center of town it was great.

Bajahowodd - 1-12-2011 at 02:34 PM

Loreto hotel rates have softened considerably due to lack of tourism. I see no one mentioned Hacienda Suites. Big pool. Gated, locked parking in the rear. Current standard room rate is $68. Another factor for me anyway, is Domingo's Place restaurant right next door.

motoged - 1-12-2011 at 04:47 PM

Gracias everybody for the good "intel" I have enough to go on as to where to look when I ride into town from Commandu and San Javier...:bounce:

La Damiana and Hotel Angra are appealing most to me at this time....I will finally figure it out when I get there.

Paula - 1-12-2011 at 10:06 PM

motoged, if you are taking the short road from San Jose de Comondu to San Javier I would love to hear about the road condition. Someone told me very recently that it is impassible even by motorcycle. I hope you have a good ride.

You have narrowed it down to two very nice hotels, and Iguana Inn is also a good place to stay~~ enjoy your time in Loreto!

Coco Cabañas

David K - 1-13-2011 at 01:02 AM

Just to be sure we are on the same page... Coco Cabañas was nice, quiet.... real 'Baja Sur' feeling... so no negitive with that part.

I thought for the old room and small beds (a twin and a full) that $89 was bit high... just my comment... and remember, I have Baja Cactus at $35 night with huge luxury beds to compare value to... It is in Loreto, and that is a destination city... so the value for rooms is greater... specially in summer when other motels are closed.

It would be a great place for a Viva event... if we could rent all the rooms... a Viva Baja Loreto!

Paula,
My ride plan out of Mulege is to explore the inland route south through San Jose de Guajademi to San Isidro, overnight in La Purisima, and then south from San Isidro to San Jose/San Miguel Comondu to San Javier.

The notion that it is not possible even by motorcycle only makes it all that more attractive...

I will be there the last 1/2 of February and will post a ride report later w/ pics...

Paula - 1-13-2011 at 08:28 AM

Ged, we took that road about 5 years ago in my Subaru Forrester and lived to tell about it:lol: I loved it and want to go that way again sometime, and motorcycle or ATV is probably the best way. I didn't mean to say that you couldn't or shouldn't do it:dudette: Have fun, and for sure post those pictures!

motoged - 1-15-2011 at 02:14 AM

Paula,
I have no idea why folks think the San Jose Comondu road is rough....

Paula - 1-15-2011 at 09:40 AM

Oh THAT part....

That's nothing!

ncampion - 1-15-2011 at 09:58 AM

I did that ride last May ouly in reverse. It is very passable by a good off-road bike. If you have a big Adventure bike it might be a hndful on some of the sections, but an experienced rider can do it. I was riding a WR 450 Yamaha and it was a blast. Have fun.

N,
My KTM 690 doesn't have reverse :lol: but I am looking "forward" to the ride...

I gave up rising my 1100 GS to Baja years ago after three trips....no good in the sand and real rough stuff.

shari - 1-16-2011 at 09:19 PM

hey Ged...just left San Miguel de Comondu this morning...LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!!!! We stayed with Negrita in a big room for 150 pesos...just beside the new cancha...next to the burros...her son Vladimir makes the most amazing pomagranate wine...ask for a glass of the anejo...aged for 3 years. I bought a gallon of it as well as a couple bottles of incredible grape vino that is more like brandy at the tecate store at the entrance to town. Tell them shari & juan sent you...stay the night there...you wont be disappointed!

in LOreto, we always stay at Sol y Mar which is on the edge of the big arroyo...i think it was 250 or maybe 300 pesos now...nice room...park outside your room...great value if you are just looking for a place to sleep. We love it there on the weekend as there is a huge farmers market thing across the street...great food!

Ged, on one of your rides, would you check out the first site of the Comondu mission if you take the old main road north from San Jose Comondu? Take some photos of the ruins and overall area? It is called Comondu Viejo since the mission was moved in 1736 after being there for 28 years...

Photo taken by Jack Swords at ruins of the original location, now called Comondu Viejo. The mission was moved in 1736 to the visita of 'San Ignacio', 22 miles south. The mission name was not changed with the move. GPS: 26°16'27.4" 111°43'08.5"

I'm actually at Angra right now. First time here, very nice family runs the hotel. Super clean, TV, AC, internet, hot water, continental breakfast and secure parking. Was very quiet last night. I'd definitely recommend it.

BigWoo,
Their website says rooms are $670 MP....is that accurate or did you pay a different rate.

Gracias

I made the reso for him at the Angra and $670 is the rate- and that's with tax already included. They don't take credit cards but Banamex is around the corner.

BigWooo - 1-18-2011 at 06:28 AM

Yes it was $670.00 pesos. Had to stay another night because car repairs took most of the day. Didn't have time to drive home before dark. They held my room for me because they were sure I would be back!
