Going to shell beach today

Please, exactly where is shell beach? A bunch of us from Villa Marina R V park ( km 8.5 the big white sign ) are going down the beach, through Percebu, and if the mud flats aren't too muddy, on south. I have been there in years past, but don't remember where to turn back to the beach.

Also, if anyone is going south from San Felipe, stop in at Villa Marina, space #8 front row ( only Arkansas license plates in the park ). You never know I might have a cold XX to share.

No, I don't call it 'David K's' Shell Island... it isn't mine, I don't keep it secret from anyone as I am not so selfish with a beautiful place that is 'public'.

I do call it an island because it is a barrier island that does get surrounded by water at the highest tides of the year.

Also, there already is a Shell Beach in Baja... at Punta Chivato where Russ lives.

bigdog, the access road is at Km. 26... about 3 1/2 miles south of the Percebu road.

This is the access road as it crosses the tidal mud flat before reaching the beach... this is an area that goes underwater at the highest lunar tides... making it an island.

Hi Sonny,

Ask Harry or Cal. They have been to Shell Island me. Harry got stuck and I had to pull him out. Fun place to go. I checked the web cam and your buggy was already gone. I guess you are already on your way.

Coming from Percebu across salt flats turn East at 4 corners where a tire is on it's side. We were there on Saturday.

Not really a good day. Along with the extreme low tides are extreme high tides which leave standing water and mud by the bridge going to Shell Island.

Yah, while the most sand bars are exposed from the extreme low tide... it is also matched by exteme high tide with tomorrow's full moon (new moon's are even higher/ lower)...

If you are in a 4x4, and if there is water covering the 'road'... just keep your tires in the 'main track' which will be the most compacted mud... and will actually have water deeper because it is a couple inches lower than the area next to it, so more water rests there. If you wonder off the well worn track, the surrounding mud is like oatmeal... and you will get stuck!

Safest time to get to Shell Island is during a quarter moon phase... The flats will be quite dry... But, the beach will have the smallest tidal exposure.

Here are some low tide pics to give you an idea of how far it can go out... at least a mile!

That is my truck way over on the beach and it is still in a place where the sea will cover it in a few hours.

Here's the access road after a high tide...

Camp is simple/ easy...

Sunsets always nice... that is Diablo Mountain...

With a zoom... you can see the homes at Bahia Santa Maria, about 5 miles south of our camp on the island...

Baja Angel and I love it there...

We 'got 'er done' It was a beautiful day. No mud on the flats. We fished for a while, no luck ( well, it was all bad luck, no fish ) Later we went on down past Santa Maria & had lunch at the little park then maybe 5 miles farther south til we turned around. 6 rigs, 5 quads & us in the dune buggy. Nobody broke down. Nobody got stuck. I'll post some pictures later.

Shell Beach...

Finally. I am taking the clan there this Easter. I have heard so much about this place, and hope that that toll booth is no longer there

Hey kids - keep your tide chart in your back pocket. A 17.4' or less tide will not get the access road wet. Anything over and water rolls in. Of course if wind is pushing the tide/water, all bets are off!!

Thanks for that Chris... I had been saying 18' + will likly do it!

Neat that you nailed it to just under 17' 6"... Yah, the winds can sure push the water up higher!
