the "map center" went out of business, so about only options are to buy online, or get a AAA road map from auto club (offices all over town).

Yes, they are beautiful, but HUGE maps... not real handy in the car... but they are beautiful and BIG... get 4 and you could attach them to cover a wall. There are two maps (norte and sur) and each one has HALF of the area on each side.

Here is the 2003 and bigger 2009 Baja Almanac... both are excellent:

just noticed today that google maps now include pretty good inegi road map data. so if looking for local roads in towns and cities, road names, etc., probably can rely on print-outs from google maps where you can see inegi data. the inegi data seems to be more reliable than baja almanac (i think baja almanac is based on data that a gringo purchased from inegi several or many years ago -- recent inegi data is probably more reliable).

That 'gringo' (Landon Crumpton) actually drives all over Baja checking the maps and correcting inegi mistakes on where roads are, etc.

The Almanac isn't perfect... it still has erorrs... but it is the best thing for seeing what is there... when you are there and can't access the Internet to see Google maps.

THIS IS A HI-JACK!

Speaking of maps, here is a trivia question.

How does a map company, such as Thomas Brothers prove in court if someone steals there pages for reproduction?

Sorry for the Hi-Jack but I found the answer interesting.

CortezBlue - 1-22-2011 at 04:27 AM

Also for a general road map, bing maps online has some good maps, better than google

They put random, fake little streets on their pages. If those streets show up on your map they can prove you copied their work. I know because we would always find them when we had to memorize the map for the fire department.

acadist - 1-22-2011 at 07:57 AM

My favorite Baja maps are abalone with pictures of fish swimming in the sea;D

chippy - 1-22-2011 at 08:13 AM

Do you want the one with all the super secret surf spots especially the SEVEN SISTERS area??

Howard - 1-22-2011 at 08:15 AM

El Jefe

:light::lol::o

chippy - 1-22-2011 at 04:53 PM

Yes David thats the one!

BajaBlanca - 1-22-2011 at 05:40 PM

Howard, what is the answer ??????

David K - 1-22-2011 at 05:48 PM

That map makers sometimes put errors on purpose in maps as a copyright protection if others are stealing their maps for profit.

El Jefe got it right on the previous page

Howard - 1-22-2011 at 05:50 PM

"They put random, fake little streets on their pages. If those streets show up on your map they can prove you copied their work."

I don't remember what I had for breakfast but I remembered this from 30 years ago. For some reason I really liked how they proved it!
