The road South of Ensenada shortly above Santo Tomas is under construction for around 3 miles or so. The whole thing is pitted with large pot holes, and the going is slow. On the way down, it was night and dumping rain when I drove through, and it was very slow going. On the way North, I came through in the daylight, and dry conditions, and it was not nearly as bad.

To update my post from a few weeks ago; I returned last night from a quick four day surf trip a few hundred miles South of the border. When I was headed South on Tuesday the above referenced road had a few pot holes but easily avoided. On Friday 1/21 going Northbound about 6pm the whole road was freshly paved and as smooth as butter. It was not yet painted. Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Thanks Mucho! Drove to La Paz around Christmas, towing the boat in the deluge! Nightmare stretch of road! Heading north in a couple weeks, sans boat, so I can fly!!!

Huh? You mean the soupy sloppy detour is gone? Like they're actually finishing the job. (*If* I understand this correctly, sorry for my surprise; it's something I'm not real used to down there.)

Times are changing. It's not all like the good ol' days anymore.

The bad news is that they have plans to widen the road down to Colonet. So, boys and girls, we can likely look forward to years of delays.

The Tecate Road has been a surprise to a lot of old timers for it's unusual progress. We'll have to wait and see how they approach the challenge.
Either that or we might have our great-grand children channel the progress reports to us.

Still have to wonder what hapens when the Tecate road is completed. The border has just so many gates. I remember not all that long ago when the road through town and past the main square was the route to the gates. They managed to reroute traffic around town. But, that said, when and if the Tecate road becomes a route of choice, what's gonna happen at the border? I know of no plan to increase the number of gates. If anyone has better info, please post.

Came in from Ensenada Tonight and yes the road is great.
It is going to go all the way to Colonet but it will be a fast pace as it has to get ready to start bringing in the things for the Port. I just hope the black top will last more than one rain season. Does not look to good. But yes it is nice for right now.
drive careful lots of crazies out there.

last month was great. there are a few sections near pedregoso rock pile that remind me of the old days.

Last night's rain had to make things a bit messy. It rained quite a bit.

They have now moved the military checkpoint that was located at the pass before heading down into the Santo Tomas valley about four miles or so further north, along part of the road that was recently widened and repaved. It looks like they are getting ready now to start working on the road heading into Santo Tomas...

Thanks bajagringo. We will be heading thru on Monday

Can't quite wrap my head around a four lane through Santo Tomas. So picturesque with not alot of room on the side of the highway.

But, should I live so long,.... I've always been bedeviled by the truck traffic through the mountains. Never make it to San Quintin as quickly as I planned. Am I the only one who seems to never encounter slow trucks until I hit one of the upgrades?
