This years, November 17 - 20, Baja 1000 starting in Ensenada finishing in La Paz will be aired on NBC Sports Network "Jeep World Adventure Sports"

I am not really trying to bust your bubble but the "Jeep" they are entering in the race has about as much chance of even finishing the course in the alloted time as I do of being elected the next pope.
It will focus only on the Jeep and is an advertising stunt only, I don't think it will make it to San Felipe must less La Paz.
I will be at the checkpoint at KM 54 with all my race radios on keeping track of it and I think that when all the hoppala is over they will sneak quitly away when the race is over.
If you want to see a real film of the Baja 1000 see "Dust to Glory" due to be released soon. It was filmed during last years Baja 1000 and the trailers are awsome! You can look it uo on the web and see the trailer. But Jeep?:lol:

Just what type of Jeep is this.The "Jeep Speed" class has been very succesful in recent Score races."Jeep Speed" vehicles have been finishing faster than the Hummers in the last several races.

Burro Bob, They are special built Jeep Commanche's and are not what the TY special is covering. The "Stock" Hummers have done well, Ron Hall is a 17 race veteran and must be 50+ years old. See orc.com and this link for the full press release about the TV show.

Rod Hall is the only 4 wheel driver to have been in every Baja 1000 race since it began in 1967. He has won his class 17 times. Ron Bishop is the only 2 wheel rider to have been in every Baja 1000.

Any news as to the route the course will take?....I have heard about "100 miles of pavement".....so there must be some knowledge as to where it will go....

Hardest hit I ever took in a Baja race was getting whacked from behind by Rod. We were picking our way through the pines and the boulders close to Laguna Hansen when he overtook us.
We finally found a place to pull over and let him by, man he was flying!

At the Baja 500 award ceremony Sal Fish said the 1000 course would be very similar to the 2002 course that went to La Paz. Of course there are always minor changes usually in the northern part. I would bet that from La Bay down it will be the same as always. Getting to La Bay will be the interesting part. It may or may not go thru San Felipe. Going up thru Mikes and back tracking the 500 course and taking the route used last year in the 1000 is more interesting that running from San Felipe down. However using the San Felipe side allows the TT's and class 1s to maybe beat the bikes overall.

This year's course will be simular to 02'.. San Felipe down into BOLA and south as before:P Hopefully without the one hour delay they had that day in Ensenada moving the the startline...

Anyone want to take a guess on what class Sal Fish ran in the 72' Baja 500, and where he finished in the race:rolleyes:
That race had 311 starters from Ensenada with 144 finishers..Went down the west coast to Rancho Chapala, and back up through San Felipe. It was the first time there was a class for "mini-pickups":spingrin:

Cannot remember Sal in that race (it was a NORRA event) but it was our very first one. We had the Mercury pickup, #82, started 2 minutes in front of PJ. He blew by us right where the military checkpoint is now below Maneadero.
We broke first just past Cielito Lindo, got going again and broke for good on top of the mountain below El Rosario. It was a very cold night!
Came back and finished the next 6 1000's.
Good memories.

My memory/guess was Sal was in a Baja Bug... and he finished 3rd in class...??? Just a guess, I am not looking at any literature.:saint:

Your guess is not bad.. Sal ran the Baja Bug class and finished 5th in class...
Bobby Ferro was the overall winner in 10:56 "driving solo"..:spingrin:

Well, I recall he was in a Baja Bug and didn't win, so it was a guess on the position he finished. Thanks for the trivia question... Okay, here's one for you: Can you name the pictured driver in the Class 6 racer? How about the year? Hint: It was the first year SCORE ran the 1000 to La Paz! Photo taken a few days before the race as the two pictured were testing the racer.

The day before the race I was lucky enough to be standing next to Parnelli's trailer when he returned from pre-running the course near Ensenada.

Trivia note: This was the first 'Baja 1000'... previous races ('67-'72) were officially called the 'Mexican 1000' run by NORRA.

1973 was the one year the Mexicans (Baja Sports Committee) ran that race and changed the name to Baja Mil (1000). No 1000 was run in '74 as B.S.C. messed it up so bad (they had a terrible Baja 500 in '74) and handed over racing to Mickey Thompson's new organization, SCORE which had their first 1000 in '75, run as a giant loop in Northern Baja.

David, it is always fun (but really rare) when given the chance to correct you.
"The government" did not run those botched events in 1974.
Some young wise guys from Tijuana and Ensenada, mostly related or connected to government people, put together their little gang called "The Baja Sports Committee."
They chased Ed Pearlman and Don Francisco right out of the country, NORRA was soon only a memory.
They not only pledged to make this a truly indigenous event but they also promised a percentage of the net profit (hah!) to the orphanages of Baja California.
Well, it was a monumental screwup. We finished the 1000 and, as per NORRA procedure, went to the La Perla and claimed our free room, as a finisher.
Seems like every one of their buddies, heck, half of Baja California, claimed free rooms, drinks, food, etc., all charged to the infamous BSC.
It took them 18 months to send us our purse money, and it was on some strange unrelated bank account.
Needless to say, the BSC soon went over the hill and out of biz.

Thank you Dick, I was under the impression that BSC was a government organization. I have the map/poster BSC gave out... somewhere. I was only 16 when that race was run. I do have a super 8 movie I took where we watched the race out past the end of pavement, east of Ojos Negros (we were sitting on those big boulders, Mickey Thompson camped next to us as he didn't qualify his truck for some reason and wasn't racing). I wonder if I have YOU on that super 8 movie? I will edit my previous post...

Dick (thebajarunner), what do you know about Ed Pearlman insisting he had rights to still race in Baja CA Sur, and often posted ads for a Mexican 1000 run out of La Paz to compete against SCORE... Nobody took it seriously, right? I think Sal and Ed made up finally...

Speaking of Ed Pearlman and Norra, Score called the Baja 500 the Baja International (it may have had a spanish twist at the end) as I understand it was because Ed Pearlman and/or Norra held the name rights with the governmant in Baja. I don't remember what year it was (sometime in the 90s) but Score made up with Ed and got the rights to call it the Baja 500.

Yes, it was the Baja Internacional about a 400 mile race... I was at the first one (1974) at Mike's Sky Rancho where there was a MANDATORY one hour down time (that year only).

The Baja Internacional was called the '500' by most and when NORRA's rights to the name ended or when Ed gave it to Sal, then SCORE changed the name back to Baja 500.
