Been there, done that. Lovey trip down to Batopilas and hiking to the church in the next town. Also in March with snow on top of the canyon, warm below.

Cool pics.

Marc...
I have never been there. On a scale of 1 -10......what would you give that trip? 10 being the best.

mcfez,
Well in hindsight it's a 10. I've been there three times since '08. Twice driving and once by train,( with armed guards), from El Fuerte (Las Moches). I plan to return in the not to far distant future. It's a long way from NorCal.
First of all read "God's Middle Finger" by Richard Grant. Any one going with you should read it also. After reading if you still want to go into the belly of the beast it's south to Hermosillo, then left on Mex16 into the mountains. A looong curvy drive. Fall is better; more water.

Basasaechi Falls

Overnight cabin at falls. Elev 7,500 ft pine forest. Feels like Tahoe

Creel. A logging and meth lab paradise

Train Station

More falls near Creel

Batopilas. The drive down; you just KNOW you are going to die!

Little cutie lives near the cathedral

A definite, no doubt about it, 10. Maybe even an 11.

When we were on our way last May, someone here on Baja Nomad said it was one of their all time favorite vacations and I have to agree. It is so full of natural beauty, plus mega history (Batopilas was put on the map by Mr. Shephard who became a millionaire mining silver there and it was the 2nd city in all of Mexico to get electricity), plus Indians who really maintain their heritage bigtime, plus it is not expensive .... I could go on and on...

if you hit the search button, you can find my trip report which I did in three parts.
