Diesel Fuel

bajaguy - 1-26-2011 at 11:45 AM

Is there Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) available between El Rosario and Guerrero Negro????

Bob and Susan - 1-26-2011 at 01:03 PM

no

bajaguy - 1-26-2011 at 02:31 PM

Well, thats gonna be ugly

David K - 1-26-2011 at 06:52 PM

Careful... Alfonso had cans of diesel for sale at Cataviņa... and he buys from Baja Cactus in El Rosario... which has had Ultra Low Azufre Diesel for a few years now... It comes from the El Sauzal depot (next to Ensenada).

bajaguy - 1-26-2011 at 08:20 PM

May have to carry 3 five gallon cans with me

Doug/Vamonos - 1-27-2011 at 08:03 PM

Do some more searching about this. I have a powerstroke 6.0 and it is supposedly not such an important issue for me. But I remember reading lots about the new diesel owners and I thought the consensus and reports were that guys were not having any problems running the diesel in Baja. I've also heard that most diesel in Baja is actually a us product since it is more expensive to transport fuel from the mainland. I do add Diesel Kleen to mine.

David K - 1-27-2011 at 08:08 PM

Diesel in Baja Norte (not sure about L.A. Bay or Villa Jesus Maria) is Ultra Low.

Ask diesel owning Nomads in Baja Sur if they have issues. None I have heard (Bob & Susan come to mind).

bajaguy - 1-27-2011 at 08:13 PM

I have a 34 gallon tank and need to get from El Rosario to Guerrero Negro and return......with some running around in between.....not gonna leave me with any wiggle room.

Does anybody know the status of Diesel in GN????

David K - 1-27-2011 at 08:16 PM

Are you just trying to not use Baja Sur diesel at all...? Guerrero Negro is 225 miles from El Rosario.

bajaguy - 1-27-2011 at 08:22 PM

I need to use ultra low sulphur only.....so 225 down and 225 back with about 100 of running around is gonna leave me a little short, unless there is ultra low sulphur in GN...........back to carrying 3 cans

SoCal-Bob - 1-27-2011 at 09:15 PM

bajaguy,

I understand your concern about using non-ultra low sulfur fuel. but as Doug said, check/ask around, especially the RVers.

I did some online research about this recently and the concensus seems to be that a tank or two will not cause long term damage. Filters may clog faster, but no major engine damage. Check out the RV sites and ask about people pulling their RVs or diesel powered RVs down.

4) http://www.rversonline.org/ArtMexULSD.html

according to that last site: "According to the station owner (Seņor Meza) the Pemex station in the town of El Rosario (160 miles south of Ensenada) is the last chance to purchase ULSD on Mex 1 when headed south in Baja California."

Can you take a 100 gallon diesel tank mounted on an ATV trailer through the San Ysidro Border going South?

bajaguy - 1-27-2011 at 09:25 PM

Bob........Thanks for the links. We plan on filling up in El Rosario for the trip. My concern is that I have a 2011 Dodge diesel P/U with less than 5000 miles and really don't want to screw it up so soon!!!!!

Empty no problema. Full not so much.

David K - 1-27-2011 at 11:04 PM

76 miles from El Rosario is Cataviņa, and El Rosario Pemex diesel is (was) sold there in cans, across from hotel (Desert Inn)... by Alfonso or his helpers. There is another distributor before Alfonso, so if not one, than maybe the other. Charge was under a dollar a gallon over Pemex price... a bargain for them driving 152 miles round trip to bring it there.

No guarantee, but good chance (he also had some Premium for sale too).

DavidE - 1-27-2011 at 11:06 PM

New vehicle Diesel Exhaust Particulate Filters will clog up using diesel fuel with more than 15 ppm sulfur. How soon this occurs, at how many miles is open to debate. You can purchase a polypropylene half drum in Ensenada, or San Quintin which will hold around 25 gallons. Harbor freight sells squeeze bulb siphon hoses cheap. This shouldn't be a high octane issue to resolve.

sounds like you got a new truck and are still in love with it, so kind of risky to use wrong fuel, or rely on DK's guys selling gas from rusty drums on side of hwy.
perhaps take a car that can use local fuel. take the other car, and don't worry, be happy.

Bob and Susan - 1-28-2011 at 06:02 AM

you guys worry WAY too much about diesel

dont take ANY extra cans...they stink

use what you fet out of the pump
you'll be fine

remember ultra low diesel is about smog and not performance

your truck computer will adjust

i'd buy in villa jesus maria

you'll be fine

I was hoping you would pipe in Bob... Your diesel is pretty new (ultra low), right? You live in Baja Sur so it only knows the diesel sold there for the most part!

Villa Jesus Maria is about 200 miles south of El Rosario/ 25 miles north of Guerrero Negro.

Bob and Susan - 1-28-2011 at 09:52 AM

sold them all

only gas now but
no problems with baja diesel and that's all they drank

I posted this some time ago, but thought I'd re-post. It's from a Chevy based site, the website (dieselplace.com) has a contributor named Ted White, I'm not sure if he's a mechanic, engineer, or what, but he does seem to know what he's talking about. He has published a lot of information on the LSD vs ULSD subject. You can do a search for his name and read the info. Here's a summary from one of his posts:

Quote:
If you search my posts back into 2007 you will see that I have contributed extensive information about the effects, or lack thereof, of lsd on the emissions system and/or engine.

In order to avoid posting pages and pages of data all over again, the bottom line is, the reason using lsd in our trucks is illegal is because using lsd produces unacceptable levels of sulfur particulate emissions. It has ALMOST NOTHING to do with whether or not the engine and DPF/DOC will be able to handle the higher sulfur fuel.

Again, if you search my posts, you will find the links to scientific testing done by the manufacturers which show that there has to be continuous use of lsd fuel for more than 40,000 miles before any measurable drop in performance of the emissions system occurs. You would have to use it for more than 100,000 continuous miles to reduce the effective life of the DPF.

I have been keeping track of more than a dozen 2007.5 and newer trucks in Mexico since mid 2007, some of which return to the USA and Canada each summer, and some of which stay in Mexico, where the fuel is still mostly lsd. Not a single truck has had a day of problems due to fuel, and I have yet to find a single failure of a DPF reported on this forum

In other words, if you happen to be using lsd fuel occasionally, it is NOT going to cause problems for the engine or emissions system. However, if you use it continuously, you can expect white smoke emissions during regeneration as sulfur compound are burned out of the DPF.

I have an '08 Duramax that's been using exclusively Low Sulfur Diesel (No ULSD) in BCS for over a year now. Don't see white smoke during re-gen yet, but only have 15,000 BCS miles on it so far. I'm not going to loose any sleep over it though.

BajaGuy,

If I buy a new Dodge, I am gonna install one of these...

Good luck!!!

why...

remember big tanks get condensation in them so you NEED a water separator
and you need to replace it often

just more things to go wrong

and the weight
~8 pounds a gallon

diesel is heavy

more weight = less performance
and more replacement parts incl tires which are EXPENSIVE:light:

Just an option for BajaGuy....

Any fuel tank can get condensation if not kept full. The best thing you can do to eliminate condensation is keep your fuel tank full and eliminate the air void.

I'm not sure if the Dodge's come with a fuel/water seperator or not, but it is always a good idea to run one if possible - especially in Baja.

As far as weight, 400-450 pounds of fuel isn't a concern in a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup truck. Many trucks actually ride a little better with a little weight in them. Besides, the only weight you would really adding would be the additional fuel that is in addition to the stock fuel tank capacity (maybe 200-250 pounds). Or, I guess this could equate to carrying an additional "well fed" passenger!:lol::lol:

Water seperator

bajaguy - 1-29-2011 at 09:43 AM
