sur / south ,, but for now, im already down here, thank god

Woooosh - 1-27-2011 at 05:43 PM

You live in Baja Sur and are jonesing for Taco Bell? That can't be right. Didn't you hear yesterday their beef taco meat only has 36% beef? At least in Mexico they would use something natural like horsemeat for a filler- before that laundry list of chemicals are additives Taco Bell uses. When the Bell Tolls, run the other way. ;)

Russ - 1-27-2011 at 05:55 PM

I like them! When I'm up there I get the 12 pac of crisp tacos at least once per trip.

fishabductor - 1-27-2011 at 06:10 PM

They taste good, but my intestines run to the southern border.

I didn't say they didn't taste good- just that they are 64% filler. Obviously the people like the meat formula or guys like you wouldn't buy them by the dozen. Maybe it's the fiber they add ("isolated oat product" is the #2 ingredient) that makes one run, but the oat filler in your taco is how they keep them so cheap. :saint:

I ask you all....

mcfez - 1-27-2011 at 06:54 PM

If you saw this little lumpy, wart(?) infested taco guy in front your local Taco Bell.......trying to wave you in....would your appetite increase? He looks like he spent too many nights at a sleazy Tijuana bar!

TacoBell sucks. We all know that, but I've forever questioned what that beefy paste is in a Jak 'n theB taco is. It's really weird. It smears when it spills on the table.
Is it a Taco Paté?
Where is that little barfing head when I need him?

Skipjack Joe - 1-27-2011 at 07:31 PM

I thought taco bell tacos were pretty healthy for fast food. Bummer.

I still like Jack in the Box tv ads, though. It's amazing how much you can do with a round white sphere.

Truth In Advertising?

Bajahowodd - 1-28-2011 at 12:58 PM

Seems like the media loves to jump on unsubstantiated allegations. While it may not be gospel, if not true, it would be monumentally embarrassing-

In today's LA Times there is a full page ad in section one headlined "Thank You For Suing US"

Signed at the bottom by Taco Bell President Greg Creed, it explains that their beef taco recipe contains 88% USDA- inspected beef. Claiming that plain ground beef tastes boring, it goes on to list 3% water, 4% spices (salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, sugar, garlic powder and cocoa powder.) Then, 5% of what they did not call, but I will call extenders-(oats, caramelized sugar, yeast, citric acid and "other" ingredients)...

Perhaps they may not be to everyone's liking, but 88% beef is a far cry from those lawsuit allegations. Besides, I imagine no one who might venture to make their own ground beef tacos would add a bunch of seasoning ingredients too.

Not too terrible for a gringo chain operation. But, here in Yuma and points South there must be over a 100 independent taco stands, some better than others. Everyone has a favorite. Mine (in Yuma) is David's Grocery at the top of Avenue B. On the other side in SLRC, it's El Chipilon.

Also, the chains are pretty much limited to beef and chicken. You can't get Tripas, Cabeza, Lengua etc. As for crunchy, that comes from a pre-made "shell" that was invented to imitate a "Taco Dorado" (fried taco) as is common in Northeast Mexico. I prefer a tortilla, corn or flour. If I want crunchy, I get a Tostada.

Bajatripper - 1-28-2011 at 02:06 PM

While they don't compare to a good fish taco, I've always enjoyed the Taco Bell fare. I've taken my Mexican wife to Taco Bell at least once per trip on our visits north of the border, and she enjoys the food, too.

Mulegena - 1-28-2011 at 02:52 PM

http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2011/01/25/yo-quiero-isolated-oat-p...

found within the article, the link to the taco meat filling:

"The "seasoned ground beef" contains less than 35 percent beef - the other 65 percent of the meat-like mixture is: water, isolated oat product, salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, oats (wheat), soy lecithin, sugar, spices, maltodextrin, soybean oil (anti-dusting agent), garlic powder, autolyzed yeast extract, citric acid, caramel color, cocoa powder (processed with alkali), silicon dioxide (anti-caking agent), natural flavors, yeast, modified corn starch, natural smoke flavor, salt, sodium phosphate, less than 2% of beef broth, potassium phosphate and potassium lactate... caramel color, natural smoke flavoring."

The gov't makes them print the actual ingredients on their label. The devil makes them print ads to cover it up. I'm SURE the Taco Bell lawyers will say "85% of that 35% is real beef" LOL

Taco Bell prepares nothing fresh in-house. Everything comes from a central commissary with an ingredients label on it. Even their sour cream comes to the units in caulk tubes. The label says: "Packaged exclusively for use by Taco Bell and it's franchisees" Sounds like restaurant food to me, not retail. You can see it close-up here:

Sure it does. Beef is listed first as the number one ingredient (although just 35% of the total), Oats is number two. The label is hard to read I'll admit. They still taste good and everyone needs fiber- who cares what's in them? right? I'm sure if you drop by Taco Bell they'll plop down the 8 pound package and let you read the label up close.

If you believe the company.... they've got the beef
""We start with USDA-inspected quality beef (88%)," Taco Bell said in an ad signed by company president Greg Creed. "Then add water to keep it juicy and moist (3%). Mix in Mexican spices and flavors including salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, sugar, garlic powder and cocoa powder (4%). Combine a little oats, caramelized sugar, yeast, citric acid and other ingredients that contribute to the flavor, moisture, consistency and quality of our seasoned beef."

Creed said the company's beef content information was on their website prior to the filing of the lawsuit." source: CNNMoney

si, a lot of talk about garbage Mexican food. I can't believe Taco Bell even survives in the USA with so many cities now having authentic taco stands set up by real Mexicans. I guess it's the same as McDonalds or In-n-Out Burger or 5 Guys. Clearly there is a quality and freshness difference. I'll take any taco joint in San Diego county with a 'TO's" in it over a Taco Bell, but that's just me. Different strokes for different folks...

BTW: Isn't the actual product label shown in the photo the definitive answer to this? If Taco Bell has falsified their food product labels, they will have more PR problems ahead to face. Why not just admit it's a blend of 36% Beef and other ingredients that fulfills our customers taste demands". Who cares what's in it if people like it? But you guys know me- print the truth or suffer the consequences... :) It's only Oats, could have been horse.

My wife and I eat at Dell Taco at least once a week and often more like three times a week. We order two $.49 bean and cheese burritos with onions and three $.49 tacos with onions and one small drink, all for about $4.28 USD. We slather the food with about 14 packages of their taco sauces. We love it, and, because we are the cheapest couple in Orange County, CA, we have a great low-costing lunch on the fly while tooling about town doing errands, and enjoying the convenience of Dell Tacos being on every corner.

Once upon a time, I was a food chemist for a short time, before going back to school and getting a business degree. I can tell you that the ingredients mentioned above are not all that bad for you, if at all bad. I have to watch my cholesterol and I appreciate eating something that tastes and feels like meat, but is only 36% meat. That means 64% less cholesterol. For those healthy eating people that don't eat meat, they eat meat substitutes like gluten and soy products. You aught to take a look at those ingredients and you will see alot of the same ingredients that are listed above in Taco Bell's so called taco meat.

I am not sticking up for Taco Bell. Personally, they are not as good as Taco Bell and they are more expensive. I think that if their product only has 36% meat, they should have been honest about it, but they weren't, they were very dishonest about it. I am bothered about the rampant dishonesty in business and always have been. But, I just don't mind eating good tasting food that is relatively safe, cheap, and has 64% less cholesterol.

Side point. Businesses in general (especially the large ones) will do and say anything that they know (or at least has a high probability of non-discovery) that they can get away with as long as it makes money for them and they won't go to prison. Whether what they do is illegal, immoral, unsafe, unfair, or inequitable is of absolutely no concern. What does matter is, "Is there a good probability that we can get away with it by not being discovered and (more importantly) without being penalized?" and that's a fact, Jack! There are a gazillion examples of it and I have seen it first hand myself numerous times.

Jesus ate SPAM at the Last Supper and it wasn't his last supper because of the SPAM. It was because of SPAM giving him added energy and endurance that he was able to suffer so long for humanity. If he had just keeled over at the beginning of his ordeal like any under-nourished man would have done we may not have Christianity today.

I'm reminded that just a couple of months ago, Jack in the Box had a promotion where they were giving away two of their tacos for free. Bearing in mind that this promo was worth a staggering $1, I was amazed to see how many folks used the drive thru, which was backed up maybe 20 cars at a time. On the same subject.

Last month we stood in a line of cars about 10 blocks deep at Mexicali for 3 hours waiting to cross the border. I thought to myself, what a total waste of gas. Does anyone have any idea how much gas is collectively burned by a group like that during a crossing? It must be mind boggling. In an age when we're scrambling to keep the fossil fuels coming we allow such waste.

The California Energy Commission gives the following advice:
* Turn your car off if you park for more than 10 seconds.
* Two minutes idle equals a mile of gas.
* If you will be idling more than 10 seconds, you will save money and gas if you turn your car off.
* An idling car burns a gallon of gas in an hour.

MitchMan - 1-31-2011 at 04:49 PM

drarroyo,
having to watch your cholesterol is not necessarily due to past bad choices. More likely current choices. If your cholesterol measures more than 200 keep an eye on it, if it measures more than 250, you have to do something about it.

The three principal reasons for a high cholesterol count is 1)you are eating more cholesterol containing foods than you should 2)your body manufactures more than is normal (that's genetic), or 3) both 1 and 2 apply to you.

The amount of normal ingestion of cholesterol is 300mg per day. There is roughly 30mg in each oz of any meat and cheese. In a Taco Bell taco there is about 1.5 oz of so called meat and about 0.3 oz of cheese. If it were actually all meat, then the amount of cholesterol per taco would be about 55mg. Two tacos, about 110mg. A safe amount. Since the so called Taco Bell meat is only 36% meat, then each taco containes only 25 mg of cholesterol and therefore two tacos would only contain a total of 50mg or roughly 1/6 of the recommended daily allowance of cholesterol. Not a problem.

Taco Bell meat: The lawsuit claims it's mostly binders and extenders such as 3% water, 4% spices (salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, sugar, garlic powder and cocoa powder), wheat oats, soy lecithin, maltodrextrin, anti-dusting agent, modified corn starch, oats, caramelized sugar, yeast, sodium phosphate, and citric acid. The foregoing items are food products (even the anti-dusting agent and soy lecithin and maltodextrin, but not the sodium phosphate which is a preservative) found in many other foods we Americans eat everyday. It's not crap, it's just not meat.

BTW, neither Dell Taco nor Taco Bell charge for putting onions in tacos or burritos upon request.

$.25 for onions? Man, I'm bringing my own onions. When I go to the movies, my wife takes a big black leather purse that we bought for $3 at a swap meet and fill it with our own popcorn we make at home, then I make us some lemon aid flavored with peach syrup and put it in two Sobe bottles that I conceal by hiding them in my brown corduroy sport coat that I bought used in Cambria for $.60 at a thrift shop. I am not payin' $6.50 for popcorn nor $5.50 for a Coke!

Goat, I don't know what to say. I like the tacos. I am a good cook. I like my food cooked properly, al dente pasta, good marinara, rare steak only, perfectly cooked vegies, perfectly made soups, etc., but I like the Dell Taco tacos and the bean and cheese burritos. There, I said it, and I'm not proud.

What a silly idea you came up with. Being on the cheap to save a buck or two. Just think of the money the theater is loosing by folks like you. I only fill my coat pockets with a candy bar and a can of soda....my kid too. Never would I sneak in Popcorn :o

MitchMan - 2-1-2011 at 08:53 AM

I know what your mean, mcfez. The purse is kind of bulky, but it works every time.

I rationalize it this way, I make low fat microwave popcorn which is infinitely more healthy than the oil rich theatre popcorn, I save $4.50 each time I go to the movies, and thats about a $170 annual savings on popcorn alone. We've had the purse for over 10 years. I rationally opt for the savings.

Also, just exactly who related to the theatre is losing money by my specific actions? You know the $170 loss of revenue yields about a $160 dollar for dollar reduction to the bottom line profits/yr after deductiong the $10 of the variable cost of the popcorn, oil, box, and salt. Less money for the CEO's lavish income, benes, perks, and bonus. If it comes out of investors dividends, it shouldn't. The CEO should take it in the shorts.

Here's another tip. Get some of the yellow mustard plastic packets and try putting a dab of mustard on some popcorn ... it's delicious. I love going to the movies.

MitchMan, mcfez .... like your style.. my wife does the same thing..

She likes going to the movies.. and she likes popcorn along with a few other things... used to just stop by the theater and buy popcorn for home "use"

To cut down the cost on the popcorn, and to get the "taste" of theater popcorn I purchased a commercial popcorn popper... a number of years ago..

It makes excellent popcorn.. and per unit cost.. well, who's counting right now...

24-21.2 oz paks.. $23.00 includes yellow popcorn, colored coconut oil, and yellow salt... each case makes 336 one once servings...

Right now, she has gotten into "snow cones" along with the popcorn... so far we haven't moved on a dispenser for soft drinks...

We used to wear our big puffy down jackets into the theatre when we live in MT. We'd each bring in a 6 pack of our favorite beer. Worked each and every time and we never got caught.

Awhile ago...I stopped on the way to Cabo Pulmo...Late in the day...stopped by a roadside "cafe"...Had burritos...After asking what the tasty meat was...Our answer was "carne frita"...Might have been road kill...dog or crow...but it dressed up nice...Better than chemical compounds that that the "comida corrida joints put in their products...No after effects...Guess it was "real" whatever it was...

$11.00 Ticket
$ 4.50 Soda
$ 5.00 Popcorn

$20.50 per person

Yeah....I told the kids no more at the concession stand a few years back. We went every Sunday for 12 years. No more. Once in a blue moon because I feel the cost aint worth it.

I hear you, Mcfez. 'The cost of going to the movies is getting ridiculous. I only go to matinees where I get in for $8.50 and I go only to Regal / Edwards theaters using my Regal card where I get a free admission and a free popcorn coupon about every 8 admissions. We use Netflix alot more these days and have even made a nuisance of ourselves at our local library by checking out every dvd in sight for free. Also, I use my DVR to record all kinds of movies and shows.

We got a flat screen for Christmas this year and we are going to figure out how to download movies from Netflix and other sources and watch them at home.

I go to La Paz about 9 times a year for 1 to 3 weeks each time and I check out about 10 dvds for free from the library and take them with me . It's only about a $5 late fee when I get back.

Since we pay $8.50 for each movie ticket, that's $17 for my wife and I as we smuggle in our own drink and popcorn. Heck, that's 4 lunches for us at Del Taco! One thing I am starting to do when I can remember is to take (smuggle) our own home made drinks to Del Taco and then we can have a hot lunch for only $2.85! Man that beats paying $9 for one dam hamburger at CoCo's or Carrow's. Oh yeah, I like the chicken sandwich at McDonald's, $1.
