Things the Mexicans do right

castaway$ - 1-29-2011 at 11:58 AM

I know I'll probably get some flack for my opinion but hey thats the spirit of this forum sometimes.
TOPES!
Yes they can be dangerous if you aren't watching and they can really mess things up when you hit them too fast (I've done it), but the flip side is they generally work which means they can save accidents with pedestrians and potentially save lives.
In the states I have seen local and state governments come up with a lot of stupid ideas to slow people down in front school zones for instance, they will spend a ton of money signs and lights etc... and it doesn't work, throw a CHEAP tope out and you have an instant speed adjuster for those driving by, they may hit it fast once but not usually twice.
Anybody else have ideas on some things they do in Mexico that in your opinion is done right over typical U.S. or Canadian methods.
And if you are so inclined, which I know many Nomads are, how about the flip side and the things you think are done wrong.

Ooops! I got laughed right out of the string a couple of years ago, when I stated that topes were a good idea. Get ready....:o

Here...I will add a bit of levity to what is otherwise a bumpy road:

One of my favorite single-panel cartoons is The Quigmans. It used to appear in the San Francisco Chronicle. The Protagonist/main cartoon character is a goofy looking guy named "Bob".

Bob was lying in the middle of the road. The caption read, "Endowed with a low sense of self-esteem, Bob took a job as a speed bump." :o:o:light::lol::lol:

Skipjack Joe - 1-29-2011 at 12:18 PM

Any idea why US and Canada haven't adopted the usage of Topes?

James Dean would still be with us if they had.

We're devoting all creative efforts to PotHoles instead.

BAJA.DESERT.RAT - 1-29-2011 at 12:23 PM

Hola,

there are topes ( speed bumps ) all over los angeles.

some are too shallow but it does slow folks down a bit.

castaway$ - 1-29-2011 at 12:36 PM

Ah yes Jams Dean- I'm sure there a little more to that story than a speed bump.

Ditto, all over Sacramento. And have been there for a long time.

DianaT - 1-29-2011 at 12:44 PM

There is a newer housing area in San Ysidro where there are topes---several on every block. It is to discourage people from taking a short cut through there after leaving the Las Americas Mal---they work!

I would love to have at least on on our street--

motoged - 1-29-2011 at 12:55 PM

James Dean....!!!!!:o:o:o Boy, THAT"S a stretch:biggrin:

I think substance abuse, sado-masochistic tendencies, and that youthful curse of feeling immortal contributed a bit to his demise:O

Skipjack Joe - 1-29-2011 at 12:56 PM

In my area they're mainly for keeping those rowdy teenagers from their excesses.

Imagine how it would be if every stop sign had been replaced with a Topes.

Rebel without a cause.

bkbend - 1-29-2011 at 12:59 PM

They do work. Some good ones have mellowed out over the years. My favorite was the one in front of El Palomar in Santo Tomas but it's just a shell of its former self.

DENNIS - 1-29-2011 at 01:04 PM

They put in a few here in PB that caught everybody by surprise. There were deep gouges carved into them, oil from busted pans all over the ground and even broken glass from lights. They will still bring a car almost to a complete stop.
They have served their purpose well. These little a-hole kids around here arn't happy if their car isn't going full speed.

Bajahowodd - 1-29-2011 at 01:11 PM

Is someone going to go ahead and rename this thread??? :tumble:

Or should I just hijack it and mention something I think Mexican's do right?

I particularly like the hair nets, masks and gloves used in the supermarkets.

castaway$ - 1-29-2011 at 01:35 PM

Pretty sure i named it the things Mexicans do right, hasn't seemed to stray too far.

"Things the Mexicans do right"? Everything!

El Jefe - 1-29-2011 at 03:52 PM

Done right; The family respects and takes care of its old people.

Now, as to those topes. In the USA the fire departments don't like them because they slow their emergency response. So many cities have gone to using "speed humps" as opposed to "bumps." The humps with proper design can be taken at a faster speed, say 25 MPH. They send the message, they slow you down, but they don't scrape the undercarriage. Way more civilized.

Things Mexicans do right? In general, they don't stress. I think they don't know what stress is.
Also, I spent over $6,000 over a period of 5 years trying, using American doctors, to find out what was causing this tremendous pain I was suffering. After all these test were done in the US one doctor told me the pain and swelling I was going through( my arm looked like my leg) was all in my head because my wife had cancer and I was freaking out! After spending 10 days imobolized in bed here in Baja I was referred to a doctor in Cabo. He took one look at me and said I think you have !!!!!!(a certain cronic desease)and gave me some pills. I asked him if I would feel better soon(because I was totally miserable) and he said by morning. In an hour I was better and still, after 3 years, I have never been sick again. The test were positive for what he thought was wrong with me.

Cardon Man - 1-29-2011 at 04:35 PM

Mexicanos do so many things right....
How about the fact you can go to the beach with a cooler of beer, kick back with your friends and not get harassed by the cops.
Walk around with your dogs off leash...
List goes on....

Service

mcfez - 1-29-2011 at 04:49 PM

Restaurant service!
Over all..... the Mexicans got their act together on serving their patrons.

They say hello, not a robot hello.

They listen to you order details. I get what I order!

Always asking if you need something, I need not beg 4 help .

Keep the table free of piling up "debris", keeping my elbows clean.

Food is always good....if not...they fix it with a smile.

The meal ticket is NEVER given DURING the meal.

All of the above typical of my experiences with dining in Mexico...but I do manage to find hell holes once in a while.

It was not worth inquiring about. Just an unwarranted attack on Dennis. Totally off the chart in regards to this string.

Skipjack Joe - 1-29-2011 at 06:22 PM

1. Mexicans have more personal freedom than we do.

2. Mexicans are less materialistic than we are. They are more likely to do something for you without payment than we are.

ohh pobrecito (sp)
want to re-read the OP's thread title??
Having to wade thru your recorded (your postings) life's misery, is a real buzzkill at the best of times. And hear you are in a thread titled "Things Mexico Does Right" plying your usual BULL s&*t.
Maybe it's the alcohol. Maybe we should consider rehab.
Whatever.
I'm simply calling you out on your crap. (and having rec'd communiques of similar thought ... I'm simply speaking up)

BajaBruno - 1-30-2011 at 12:35 PM

Like most of us, I've seen recidivist speeders hit topes so hard the back end of the car flew a couple of feet off of the pavement, and others drive off into the dirt or into oncoming traffic lanes to avoid them. They seem to primarily, and negatively, impact only those who don't need that incentive to drive carefully.

As to the title of this thread: tacos and beer (the combination) is my nomination.

drarroyo,

It is always appreciated when someone usually agrees with my views. However, my consistent theme is: Posters do not have to agree with me. I will often call someone on a topic or post in which I disagree. But what I require is a civil, respectful tone. ( I have maintained this attitude all my life; not just since the Tuscon tragedy).

On a rare occasion I will post something inappropriate, I too am human. Usually it is an, albeit rare (ha!), failed attempt at humor. I do dish that out, as a stand up and also while sitting down. But I try not to cause discomfort to anyone in my writing, at least not on a forum.

I do have a secret place where I do sometimes cause discomfort. I regularly manipulate characters on the written page to do all sorts of nasty, evil deeds. They say horrible things to one another. As narrator, I have the skills to dissect their ideologies and, while I am at it, garrote them, verbally, for their stupidity. But that is fiction. :smug:

We all know Dennis. He and I have often disagreed through the years. Yes, he can be all over the place emotionally. But we remain on cordial, mutually respectful terms.

I just thought you had made an unnecessary attack on Dennis. I do get your point that, if he has said those things you quoted, it appears out of place with the title of this thread. But so what? Why the rancor?

Maybe there is some history there between you two personally, which is really none of my business. But when I see something ugly that is posted, I try to smooth it over. For that, I have sometimes been accused of being a "wimp" or a Kumbaya Komrad. For that, I will make no excuses. I am comfortable with who I am.

And now I will take off my cape and return to my everyday persona (whomever he is).:saint::yawn:;)
