That's the irony of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Even though the law went into effect requiring returning citizens to have a passport, or
similar acceptable ID, that rule is not being enforced by our border agents. But, as Woody notes, if you want to be legal in Mexico, seeing as you are
talking about a ten day stay, you need to get the FMM visa. To obtain that, you are required to show your US passport.
That said, I wonder just how many folks bother to get the FMM if they are going no farther South than San Felipe and environs.Steve&Debby - 1-29-2011 at 01:37 PM

A Mex Auto Insurance Co recently tried to worm
their way out of paying a claim, for what I consider
a small technicality. So that tells me other Mex Ins
may use other ways of denying claims. Which MAY
include that the policy holder has to prove he is
in Mex in compliance with Mex Immigration regs.
I go to San Felipe a couple times a yr., always getting the
free 7 day fmm or the 180 day fmm. I would not be
anywhere in Mex for more than 3 days without some
tourist permit. Most San Felipe visitors do not get
a tourist card, regardless of their stay
I don't believe Mex Imm will issue an fmm without
a passport, although I'm not positive of that
As pointed out, coming back th the US is
not a problem. Mexico recently made a requirement that
tourists require passports to enter Mex, they then
modified it to require passports for travel to the interior,
and they lifted the passport requirement for border area
travel, San Felipe, fits into the Mex govt definition
of that ill defined border zone

We have never been asked for any Passport going in to San Felipe (we have a house there). We do get asked for passports leaving Baja for the USA.
Again.....we also had a few folks (including son) without passports.....no biggy.
I am one that always have said you dont need a tourist card for San Felipe. I'll get flack for saying that......

My wife and I have our passports,we are trying to rent a house in San Filpe over the christmas holiday and have our kids and grandkids come down for a
week.I know in the past we just made sure we had copies of our birth certificates and that would do. Just checking to see what has changed if
anything.
