I'm guessing it'll be down somewhere around Guerrero Negro. When you see Marlon Brando and his minions all bearing down on you, try not to panic. <g>

If it's on that day we can't buy booze, we may be pretty grumpy.
Oh yeah.. if the resorts can sell on election day but maybe Malarrimo can't, is there such a "resort" in Guerrero Negro?

woody with a view - 1-31-2011 at 08:14 AM

on dia de reyes both the TKT places in jesus, mary were closed. we had to drive to rosarito 25 miles north to the little tienda by the auto parts store for more cerveza.....

captkw - 1-31-2011 at 09:33 AM

Some people seem to feel safer traveling in numbers.. with fellow countrymen... at least for the first trip into a strange land. Others may just like to have a guide to show them places they don't know about... Again, the next trip, they may come alone.

bajacalifornian - 1-31-2011 at 10:15 AM

If this is the caravan seen by my wife on the road recently, Nicely done! Not all packed together. Room to pass between.

Baja&Back - 1-31-2011 at 03:13 PM

David: Of course not!!Nobody here is scared. It's the social situation they enjoy. Last nite we had Spaghetti, Caesar salad, Chicken Marsala, and Italian music on the beach with a fab sunset - followed by Dave's fireworks display. What a social group we got!!!

Captkw: You would be very hard pressed to find anyone who knows more about Baja, top to bottom, than me, except maybe John Smith from Baja Winters Caravans. Our groups constantly hear single travellers saying, "Where was that exciting place you went? I missed it."

Don't knock ANYTHING if you haven't tried it!

captkw - 1-31-2011 at 03:41 PM

wow, I just myself as a travel guy would not like that scene myself,,but please knock yourself out,,I hope you are haveing fun and making the money....as someone that has been mex since I was 8,my claim to fame is that I wired up the first disco in cabo, the round chinese resturant called the el toro (I think) but when gramn had( red head hiker) dinner at our house at punta gordo and my mom was helping him promote his book and talk,s I relized that a man's travel's are his and his alone,, we each see the same beach diifferent....as that I get 4 or 5 month's down each winter/spring since 78/79 winter , to do what I want and away's have boat's to go out to the island's and explore,,,,ya you know baja better than me

Hope you are all having a good time. Aren't you glad you don't have a "23 ft c class towing a boat" in your group throwing a damper on all the fun?

I was answering Captkw in general terms as to why SOME people like to travel in groups... wasn't specific about your business.

I wish more would like to go to Baja that way... then I could have a job, as I love showing Baja off... and have led daily group trips in the past...

Sure... Last time we hooked up was at Viva Baja Cactus in November, 2006... Then there was that time we passed you guys south of El Rosario waving and honking... but you didn't see us...

Baja Angel works in San Marcos and I will work all over the county when there is some... I do have an estimate today, wish me luck!

I would have to do it for 'fun' because I do not have an FM-3 work visa (required for any 'work', including voluntary)! Thanks for asking... u2u me the locations you are interested in and I will help with maps, road log, sites along the way to see, etc.

[note: if the 7 Sisters, then an okay from Woody will be needed, since he owns the area :light::lol::smug: ]

I must agree with you. But, as David K says, some folks like to travel this way. For me, I would not enjoy a caravan.... can't see well and you are taking in the exhaust from the rig in front of you. You have no freedom to stop at places you see along the way if the caravan doesn't stop, etc.

But, I'm sure this works for others, just not us. We like adventure on our own during our travels.

Same goes for cruises... don't like'm at all.

I've made many camping trips solo and a couple with a group, I've made many solo flying trips throughout Baja and several with a group.....it's all good. I enjoy being by myself most times but I have to admit that some of the most memorable times were with a group of like minded people having fun.

Why such a "tude" cap?.....dt

captkw - 2-2-2011 at 07:34 AM

dtbushpilot,,,sorry,,I recently lost grand ma, and my dog,,and this ........nevermind,,,, I will watch the "tude" thank's for calling on it.....realitly check

Do you somehow enhance your enjoyment of the Baja experience by trashing the way others choose to experience it? Thankfully most Nomads don't feel the same way. It was suggested previously in this thread that you lighten up, and you seemed to agree to a "tude" adjustment as influenced by the passing of your dog and grandma . What is it this time?

I'm guessing you were ahead of the schedule I expected. Betcha we passed in El Rosario on the 5th. Pretty much the only significant caravan we encountered. And yes, some of you were waving.

my only b-tch with caravans is, when i wanna get on down the road, I WANNA GET ON DOWN THE ROAD!....and if the caravans would leave enough room for me to hopscotch on down their little party it would be fine...but a lot of the time it's like they group so tightly together one can't pass in the best of conditions...there should be some "caravan etiquette" rules that should be adhered to so we have lots of satisfied travelers...caravans and bicycle riders have both tested me in the past...but...i'm a patient man...ask my wife.

Caravan heading north as I'm heading south with burro, Misión. Lots of friendly waves, sounding of horns, and snapping of pictures.

I’ve enjoyed the campsites and campfires of caravaners over the years – and have enjoyed getting to know the folks. I respect the challenges and responsibilities of their mode of transport. Probably not how I’d ever want to travel Baja…

But then again, most people wouldn’t care to hike solo 1000 miles with a burro either.

A Baja Road Trip without Caravans?

Pompano - 3-28-2011 at 05:44 AM

Say it ain't so!

Hey, it's all part of the Baja experience. If they disappeared, I would miss caravans on the Baja Road. After all, it's just another great thing to b-tch about...right?

....NOT!
;)

I've said this before about caravans on the Baja Road...but here goes again for the sake of this thread:

Please note that these are MY personal experiences with caravans on the Baja Road. Yours may be quite different, and I respect the opinions formed from those.

In all the years I've driven the paved Road to Baja Sur..(from when it was built in 72-73 and made available for caravan adventure)... I have never been unreasonably inconvenienced by caravans, nor found them to be rude or unsafe drivers.

On the contrary, most people who drive these oversize vehicles are generally far better drivers than some others..having had to handle thier longer rigs in many different driving situations. In fact, many large rig drivers have taken training for CDL licenses. In some states, it's required. Indeed, I'm a avid CDL RV driver having made dozens of trips across this continent.. and know of what I speak about 'situations'. I have killed nobody yet...and most importantly...I have not let the bad drivers, drunks and speeders kill me!

Unfortunately, I have squashed a jaywalking salamander or two. :( ..but who really misses a salamander or two?
(I don't dare mention the happy, frolicking chipmunk family crossing the road in Yellowstone Park...groan..ugh.)

In over 150 round-trips from Mulege to San Diego, I've lost count of the many fatal car, sem-truck, and bus crashes I have personally come across. Horrible memories. I have yet to see a single crash involving caravans, let alone any fatalities, although this probably has happened somewhere?.. after all, I have other things to do besides driving up and down the Baja Road..like taking photos and writing trip reports on this forum.

Here's over 100 Airstreams parked next to Posada just a couple years after the pavement went through our area...winter of 1972-1973. The only trouble they caused was being too friendly and spending way, way too much money in the local stores...thereby robbing some anti-caravan folks of some juicy 'gossip'.

Definition of Baja adventure: ..that term has as many definitions as there are personalities involved.

Ahh...I feel much better...Cleansed, I might say....end of rant.

Now..back to the b-tchin'...Jeez ..dont'cha just hate those damn long caravans? ;D

Most likely was, Dennis. And yes, I've posted that photo a few times on BajaNomads, among other RVing forums. There was a whole chapter of Baja folklore started about caravans back then. None of which was factual.
