San Diego Zoo 1-30-11 (a Baja connection too)

David K - 1-31-2011 at 11:22 AM

One thing nice about living in San Diego County, besides being next to Baja California, are the attrcations here to enjoy year-round.

We are members of the Zoological Society (very reasonable dues) and we can go to the Zoo or Wild Animal Park (renamed 'Safari Park') any time, 'free'. Great for these slow buisness times and good walking exercise, too! Saturday, we went to the park east of Escondido and Sunday, to the zoo downtown San Diego.

Here are a few photos...

Look, from the Bahia Asuncion region:

Another Baja connection...

My favorites...

The koalas were crazy! They have always been asleep, but with the day's cloudy and rainy weather... very active!

Check out my photos from the Wild Animal Park last year where the largest collection of boojum trees outside of Mexico is located!

Santiago Zoo 2001:

Poor Leo the lion did suffer... the lady that I took to this zoo back then also cried and was mad that I took her there... I said something good will come from your concerns... She went into action, money was raised, the animals were moved, the zoo is gone. There have been many posts over the years... Just do a Nomad search for the Santiago Zoo.

Here's a shot from the Wild Animal Park when it was out by Laguna Cyn Rd. Early 70's. That's Frasier (sp)

One time, about 25 years ago I took some kids to the Wild Animal Park and there was a crowd of people at the gorilla enclosure looking at him. He just stared back and all the sudden picked up some feces and flung it into the crowd. I guess he was letting everyone know how he felt about the whole thing. Funny but sad too. What bad luck to be wild and then end up in a cage for the rest of your life.

Different place. Lion Country Safari.

Yah, the Wild Animal Park is not even close to Lion Country Safari... in any aspect (location or theme). In fact, Lion Country Safari went out of business maybe 20 years ago???

In a perfect world there is no need for zoos. We are members and when you look at what has been done by SD Zoo.org thru research,breeding,education,species-preservation and conservation it provides some balance. Not all zoos are created equal. It would be nice if they were all follwoed the model of the SD Zoo and Safari park. Places locations also have an incredible amount of interesting plants. I spend as much time checking out that as I do the animals. In fact it is said that the Safari park has more money invested in plants then animals.
