After all.....doesnt one go the the beach for the beach?

Soulpatch, you can get a slip at reasonable rates from the Marina de La Paz, though it is a little farther from the open water. They have no parking for your trailer, unfortunately, but a local Nomad may be able to help with that.

The last time I checked, launch rates at Costa Baja were ridiculous. I didn't ask about slip rates, but they are very proud of that marina, so I suspect they may be high.

I usually launched at Club Cantamar, which was about $15, and a good ramp, although canted to one side. Comitan and probably others launch at the free "ramp" on the other side of the cove from Cantamar (called the Pichilingue Public Ramp), but I'm not that brave.

see my U2U, I have looked at the units at Colina del Sol and I sent a review to you. I think if you want a resort type vacation, Costa Baja would be more to your liking. both of these places are going to feel self-contained, for different reasons.
what specifically are you looking for, and for how long 'in June'?

With a 14 footer, you'd probably like to get close to the fishing, so Club Cantamar or somewhere else to the north may be the best bet to launch from. You might talk to them about storing your boat there, or side-tying at their marina.

Also, don't forget Bahia Muertos, or Bay of Dreams as the developers call it, for a day trip. Nice launch ramp (free the last time I was there), pretty little bay, good fishing, and about 1 1/2 hours from La Paz. Going north in the morning will usually give you a following sea to return on.

OK Soulpatch, pick your poison! For your 14ft Gregor, any of the ramps will work. So far I have launched at the Pichelingue free ramp, the Fidepaz Marina, beach launched in El Sargento, and at Muertos/Suenos. That is with a much heavier 17ft C.C., and all have been trouble free. I had to wait an hour once at Muertos for the tide to rise a couple feet. Fishing has been fair to poor since I got here on Christmas Eve, but by June it should be very good. By June I should have just started to figure out what, where, when, bait, ect., and will be glad to spend some time with you in either boat, or buddy boat. Hang on future homie, you will be here soon!

Soulpatch, you mention that you do not see yourself as "Resorty" type of people then I suspect you are going to feel like a fish out of water at the Costa Baja. I had not been out there at all and went out to go to dinner when we were down there and it was so "Resorty" that I could not wait to get out of there. It seemed a whole lot stuffy and you may look a little funny launching your Gregor with a coat and tie.
You might want to check out Cantamar as they have their own ramp and marina and seem a little more laid back as they serve the diving crowd.

I guess I'll have to put in my 2cents. Leave the boat home!!! You will not go out there and just start hauling in fish and it will restrict you going and coming. Your better off exploring the area with your family this time, bring a shore fishing rod if you must.

I have been looking for a good SAFE place to launch my lightweight 15.5 foot fibrerglass center console outboard since I got it fixed in August. I launched out of the La Paz Marina several times, but had to motor a round trip of 40 miles just to go to the southern tip of Espiritu Santos and the only thing I caught was trigger fish and one cabrilla.

By safe, I mean safe from having my 98 Tacoma stolen while I am at sea. I am paranoid about it. I looked at the launch ramp at Pichilingue at the hotel there and they said that it would cost me about $10 - $15 USD to launch there and that I could park the truck and trailer at a gated parking area close by that they provided. That sounded good, but I am still far from good fishing grounds. There is a beach with alot of pangueros close by there, but, again, beach launching there would be fine but I am paranoid about leaving my truck out in the open while I fish.

I would love to launch at Tecolote as that is a great place to launch from being close to both Isla Espiritu Santos and Ceralvo Island, but, again, worried about the truck.

I think the ideal place to go is Bajia de los Muertos. Free decent lauch ramp and not much traffic either being as remote as it is and having a nice open air restaurant right there. I feel a sense of safety their for my truck. I don't really know for sure, all I have is my gut instinct to go on here. But, like has been said, it's an hour and a half from La Paz El Centro.

I am wide open for some recommendations and comments from you experienced guys on places to launch from for good fishing, decent launch ramps and security for the truck. Also, any recommendations on launching places in the Ventana area?

I stayed in these very nice condos on the pacific side of cabo and they wouldn't let you go in the ocean there. They had a guy we called the beach N-zi that would tell you to get out of the water. We ended up at cabo beach everyday so it was still a good trip.

Those are all good places to launch, pichilingue, canatamar, tecolote, muertos... I guess we could add La Ventana main campground to that as well.

At some point you just need to get over your concern about your car or trade for another that makes you more comfortable. If not you have a good solution with cantamar which covers all your concerns, proximity, security etc... They are catching dorado and even jurel these last few days, but today is too windy.

Mitch, Launch your boat at los Muertos, it's secure, has a good ramp, and is less than a half hour run to the south end of Isle Cerralvo which is about as good of fishing as you will get for the La Paz area. Oh, and the ramp and parking are free.

Soulpatch, I'd be glad to take you out once, or more! The less hassle the better, and by June, it will be early out, early in. With your schedule, leave the boat in BOLA! Barring wind like today, I hope to be fishing 3-5 days a week by June.
Mitch, Muertos is the way to go. I've left my 2006 Tundra there 4 times, and my friend's newer F-250 has been there weekly for 3 years, NO PROBLEM! Bait is usually right around the corner on the way to Cerralvo.

I've got to agree with the folks who say leave the boat behind this time. for your first visit just get a taste of the city and definitely try to stay somewhere central where you can walk to everywhere. check the past accommodation reviews for more ideas. you've got time to make a decision, June shouldn't be very crowded. Nomads...can't we come up with more condo/housing choices that would work for this family? two weeks, two six year olds, need kitchen and washer/dryer. can't be that hard to find something in their price range rather than the two mentioned at the start of the thread.

Ventana has a lousy ramp that needs four wheel drive and by June most of the windsurfers have gone back to the Gorge to do their thing. Muertos is your best bet, but if you can get a trip on Bajabass boat, you are way ahead of the game for sure. You might want to check http://www.VRBO.com for some great deals that are available that time of the year. This is a listing of Vacation Rental by Owner. There's just one problem with Muertos you never know what the winds will be like when you get there, can be a long trip for nothing.

It kinda seems like Soulpatch isn't getting alot of responses, but some of us have been throwing ideas out there since he brought up this topic a couple of weeks ago on TalkBaja.com. One, possibly two forum contributors :dudette:

He mentions the family's plans on TB, but only hit the highlights on this post. The family's upcoming trip will be much more than a vacation- they're scouting out future locations to live when he retires in a couple of years.

I can picture him in a dark station wide awake at 2 am after dealing with a drunk and obnoxious dirtbag, pouring over VRBO and mumbling "I've got to get out of here". I get the impression he's like we were those final years before retiring and it's all he can think about. (for us it was the last 20 years). I feel for you man

The time will be here before you know it though.

I've offered opinions and sent him PM's on some of the rentals and locations he's posted based on what I'm guessing Mrs. Patch would and wouldn't like to help make his mission as successful as possible. But my main advice has been - don't get an ulcer. They (she) may like La Paz, or not. Or maybe they'll stumble upon some place they like even better. Maybe it will take more than one visit Soulpatch. I wonder if you should focus this trip on enjoying yourselves and see if the place "feels right" ?

Hopefully some other options will come up too.

Personally, I'm quite fond of downtown La Paz. The malecon is wonderful, goes for miles, and gets a lot of use by the locals strolling around at night and jogging in the AM. They have frequent organized activities for kids on the sand next to the malecon, and there are several good to terrific restaurants within walking distance. The tourist cops have always been very helpful when I've asked them questions and I've never seen any "trouble" in the area. No one is hawking timeshares or stringed beads and the breeze off of the bay is very pleasant. The noise can be troublesome if you are an early sleeper, but it dies down at a semi-reasonable hour. All in all, a pretty good choice, I think.

We had some fun getting a super pange back on the trailer there once, before there was a ramp, when the wind kicked up to 25kts out of the south while we were out fishing.
