Arriving in La Paz

Mexicokid - 2-9-2011 at 04:53 AM

My plans are starting to come together for my first Baja trip...I shall be leaving San Miguel de Allende around 26th february and then take the cargo ferry out of Mazatlan to La Paz around 5th March and stay in La Paz a few days to explore and catch the last couple of days of Carnival. Then do the Cabo loop before before starting up north and spend as much time as I can whale watching and renting a kayak and just seeing and doing as much as i can before heading for the border around 8th April.....I am driving solo a 23 foot class C with a 49cc scooter, any suggestions and advice would be so welcome.....Les

When you arrive at Pichilingue and head to La Paz you may find that the Malecon is a bit crowded and is blocked in the afternoon and evening. Therefore you may find that you could park in front of Palmira Marina to begin your 'trial by fire' which is just past Balandra beach park, in front of Palmira in the center of the road is a dirt parking lot, which may serve you to relax and adjust. From there you can walk to the event.

When you do drive into La Paz you may find it's easiest to take the first left hand turn at the windmill to bypass the Malecon go up a block and turn right to head parallel to the waterfront and find a place to park on the sidestreets. The Malecon will be so crowded its difficult to pass and no parking is allowed.

You may also use the out front of Palmira parking spot as a staging spot to visit the Peninsular beaches of La Paz in the day time including Balandra and Tecolote which is an excellent place to camp and visit in the day time and fun for the scooter.

Carnival is awesome however overwhelming and limiting in some sense. The parade just prior to sunset is a not to miss event, I think it runs on the last days though I am uncertain. You can see it from the sidewalk anywhere and it culminates at 16th of September where there will be live music, actually lots of live music. Be cautious about being out at the bewitching hour which is about 1am-3am, it's goes nuts and not in a good way.

When you arrive send another note and perhaps we can meet up for a lemonade and a taco.

Have taken the ferry from La Paz and going to Maztalan is about a 9 hour trip, so get a room on board to take in a nap as you sail. The cafeteria serves good food and you get a meal as part of the trip. They also have a little store not much but has snacks, drinks, and little items you may need while traveling. The bar/dance area is fun as they do karaoke which has some good singers and some that will help you go to your room to take a nap,LOL> Very clean and helpful people.

You will have to drive your own vehicle onboard so do not panic not a big deal you just drive up to where the sailors on board will direct you where to park, stay calm. I say this as I started to panic when told that this guy had experienced his vehicle sliding backward but the metal landing strips prevent this just drive up and park. You will probably be taking the trip back in late evening arriving in La Paz early morning so take my advise and get the room.

You will really enjoy La Paz just a great place we really like it. The road down to Cabo has some areas they are working on but no big deal. Take Care & Travel Safe----"No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN!!" bajafun777
