smorgasboard of pescadores

shari - 2-10-2011 at 08:01 AM

Yesterday I drove Juan out to san roque at 5:45 as he was doing an abalone evaluation. They record the density, weight and size of the abalone in marked areas for the fisheries biologist who will be setting the quota based on this evaluation. They do several evaluations a year to keep tabs on the species. It appears they will start the ab season in march and looks like they are in good shape.
Lobster season is wrapping up now and ends Feb.28th.

The San Roque beach was a flurry of activity with a smorgasboard of pescadadores in yellow, orange and green rubber pants... abuloneros, langosteros, sargaseros and the big truck was there to load up the week's lobsters to bring them fresh to market in ensenada.

I felt a wee bit guilty as i skipped down the beach dancing to the music on my Ipod in the golden glow of dawn...while the fishermen set out for another day on the water.

All my doctors have said the only cure for me is a diet rich in langosta, abulone and caracol. I hope its not to late!

Shari when Juan does the abulon evaluation is he freediving? Or on hookah or scuba? It is so good to know that there are still abalone on the west coast of Baja, they are pretty well gone in Southern California. I am just interested to know how the samples are taken.

Ken...areas are marked off with flags and they dive with a hookah setup and count the number of abalone in an area and take samples that are weighed and measured (then eaten!!!). they do several evaluations a year to monitor growth of the abalone and the quotas are determined by this method. The stocks are doing VERY well here as they have such strict regulations and protection of this valuable species. Both coops can abalone and it is an important resource for the village along with lobster. Fishermen can only fish one or the other to spread the wealth around.

Lots of hungover pescadores today...lobster season ended yesterday and the fishermen are gonna sleep for days to recover from their 5 month season of working 7 days a week with only 5 days off in 5 months...it is a grueling fishery.
