Cassez was detained in December 2005 at Vallarta's home, where several kidnap victims were found and rescued by police.

"They took away my last hope," Cassez told AFP by phone from the prison where she is being held.

"On March 8 it will be three years and three months, taken from my life."
:?::?::?: isn't this 2011? the writer appears to be mixing old quotes with current info

This story resurfaced because of current events with her case.

On loan from Fulano:
-----------

A Mexican tribunal on Thursday struck down an appeal by a Frenchwoman sentenced to 60 years in prison on kidnapping-related charges, prompting an outcry from France's foreign minister and reigniting a case that has stirred emotions in both countries for half a decade.

Florence Cassez
The woman, Florence Cassez, was arrested near Mexico City in 2005 along with her boyfriend and convicted in 2009 of kidnapping, illegal weapons possession and organized crime.
Ms. Cassez, in her mid-30s, has always maintained her innocence.
In their decision, a panel of Mexico City judges argued that the procedural irregularities that formed the backbone of Ms. Cassez's appeal didn't justify overturning the previous conviction.
The case has been a lightning rod for criticism both in Mexico, where kidnapping rates are high and sympathy for the accused is low, and in France, where the government has questioned the fairness of the trial.
Mexican President Felipe Calderón in 2009 denied a request by his French counterpart, Nicolas Sarkozy, that Ms. Cassez be allowed to serve her sentence in France rather than in Mexico on concerns the sentence might be shortened.
In a statement Thursday, French Foreign Minister Michčle Alliot-Marie called the courts' decision "deplorable" and said she wishes "more than anything to manifest my solidarity with our compatriot and her family."

The French goverment are idiots. They could have negotiated this very quietly with the mex goverment and probably she would have been sent to serve a shorter sentence back in France. But no! they went to the media with this, and didn't realize Mexicans have cero tolerance with kidnappers. Now the Mex goverment can't do anything about it because shes seen by Mexicans as a kidnappers whos trying to get out of trouble with the support of her goverment.

If one were incarcerated in a foreign country for 60 years, was unhappy about the length of the sentence and wished to just, walk away from it all, I don't think you could pick a better place than...Mexico.

Only that they are both probably guilty and trying to escape punishment because they are women.
