In Baja California, 10 soldiers were detained for alleged ties to drug traffickers and turned over to federal prosecutors, the Defense Department said Thursday.

The brief statement said the soldiers were assigned to the 67th Battalion in the Pacific coast city of San Quintin. It said the three junior officers and seven enlisted soldiers were detained Tuesday and flown to Mexico City on Wednesday.

The tip of the iceburg. These enlisted kids, for the most part, lived in trees before they were conscripted. Who would be more vulnerable to a bribe, especially if accompanied by their junior officers?
An exposé of who was dirty in this country would bring the Western World to a halt and the Western World, with their intel, knows this. It's just us peons who are left in total darkness to figure it out for ourselves.

Ouch

They'll burn the Indians and relocate the officers. Nothing more. Don't want bad press for the military.

Damn!!! That sure as hell bursts my bubble. I guess I was naive to think that the boys from the "Cuartel Benito Juarez" in San Quintin beyond being corrupted.

another "ouch". conscription? My nephew graduated college in December and entered the Mexican Army in January (quite voluntarily). He wants to be part of the solution for Mexico. The military guys enlisting now aren't all poor, uneducated or stuck on stupid- they just aren't willing to let their country go down the tubes. I'm really looking forward to my nephew kicking some butt. The future of Mexico depends on the young and the next generation. They are seeing change around the world, have access to real-time information and have a real shot to make a difference. They are incommunicado the first six months of service, but I'll let you know what is really going on once that info feed is opened.

btw: "Tried to buy my sleeping bag" is kinda good; taking it when you aren't looking is very bad. I'm sure a dozen nomads will post about how they gave their sleeping bags or an air mattress to them. We can't keep judging the new security force by their acts in the past- or the cycle never ends.

Your nephew has a degree and he joined the military as an enlisted man? Why would he do that? Seems he could have easily had a commision. An officer in the military has one of the best jobs in the country.

I think that is the US Army. (??) His goal is to be an officer in the new Baja State Police force they are putting together. They will require all the force to have military backgrounds. He met with Capt. Montero in Rosarito last year and Montero helped him decide which career route to go. Perhaps they don't want potential officers of the new force being corrupted by contact with the old force? He's a physical fitness nut and was very much looking forward to all the endurance training. I'm really not sure how it works down here Dennis- but I hope the tuition and his degree doesn't go to waste. ;)

Red light, green light.

I'm told that it's basically luck of the draw. When you first get your voter card you push the button. Green light gets a pass. But, I'd also be willing to bet that those who get a red light and can afford it...don't.
