It is a neat place. I always stay the night near Palenque on my way down that side, but only once did I go to San Cristobal. I was impressed with it, too.

so we do Palenque site tomorrow and we are not too impressed with the hotel we found. for another time, which hotel do you recommend BajaBruno ? or anyone else with experience staying here.

I stayed in Palenque at Posada Margarita - nice view at the back, large rooms, front patio/lawn, off the main drag.

I have been to San Cristobal many times while passing back and forth to Guatemala. What a beautiful town! I hope you brought warm clothing. It gets pretty cold there.

The Mayans of San Cristobal wear either all black or all white wool. The only splash of color is in the ribbons that stream from their hats. That is in stark contrast with the Mayans just across the border in Guatemala. There they all wear intricately woven bright colors in their huipils and/or pantalones.

The Catholic church allows them to perform pagan rituals right on the front steps of the church, so long as they also go inside and worship J.C.

Vie Bien, Blanca y Les!

toners, you are right...the skirts are almost all black and a thick wool blanket that the women wrap around their waists. today i saw a woman and she was selling here in town (CATEMACO, Verzcruz) in one of those skirts ... she looked so out of place and her wares were all from further south.
